In Book Seven, you hear the story of how Bob met Randy and Kathy by accident - literally. As happens sometimes, that led to a relationship that got closer. and closer. and closer, until it was absolutely incredible how close they got. The project had made an amazing difference in Bob's life, but he wasn't prepared for this.Book Eight is the last of the series. Technically, the project was already finished, but Bob had one more interview to do before he could write up his project, get it published, graduate, and move on to. well something. This interview was a favor to another couple he'd interviewed. It wouldn't take long. It probably wouldn't even be in the paper. It couldn't possibly affect him like some of the other interviews. Yeah. right. This interview was the one that would change his life forever.
At over 700 pages, this series is just fun, insightful and thought-provoking. It looks into the lives of 7 couples and a woman who has lost her husband, all with different lifestyles and issues to grapple with. Bob is the catalyst for making their lives better. It’s well worth reading to see the compassion with which he does that, and of course he reaps some benefits too. 😇
5 Stars for this instalment and the overall series. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it/them again in another 5 or 6 years.
ORIGINAL REVIEW - About Jan 16, 2020
Another really fun book and series by Robert Lubrican and a really great finish to the series.
These are the final two stories in Bob’s Masters Thesis research. Each story is unique with Bob being the common thread.
Through the eight stories, Bob interviews over 100 couples. Out of that 100, Bob come across “unusual” circumstances with eight. These are their stories, and we learn how Bob “helps” them in his own unique way.
I think if you read any of the prior books, it’s worthwhile reading this 4th one where all the threads are pulled together.
Through these books, we see Bob grow as his story is filled in. It’s great to see him evolve. And it’s a wonderful exploration of the trials/troubles/circumstances couples face as they move through life.
The first story in this book (Story 7) is Randy and Kathy’s story. It’s a story of perseverance for two foster kids (now young adults), persistence from Bob and kismet for Kathy. In this book, Bob answers a lot of questions for Randy, Kathy and himself; resolves a big issue for the young couple and fills a major hole in all of their lives. It’s pleasant to read about foster children who persist and become successful; so often the stories go the other way (ps: I do recognize this is fiction).
The second story (Story 8) revolves around a reference from one of Bob’s older couples to a young widow next door. The attraction between the two challenges the results of Bob’s thesis. What’s a guy to do? You’ll find the answer as you enjoy reading about Bob and Sabrina. What really makes this story special is it picks up all the loose endings from the other 7 books. For me it’s interesting to contemplate a person like Sabrina, with her mature attitude about Bob’s entanglements from his research. I also wonder if Bob and Sabrina’s relationship would have bloomed if Sabrina had been more conservative in her outlook. It certainly wouldn’t have been as much fun!
