Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
Man... I think I read too many manga... Oh well!!!
Anyway, this manga is the prequel series to Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, which is soooooooo good! It tells of the story of Sinbad and how he became as powerful as he did in the Magi Universe and his struggles to be as powerful as he is. I can't go too in depth on how powerful Sinbad is because of, you know, SPOILERS!
Anyway, this is a sweet and very touching fantasy series that any fantasy will absolutely adore (maybe even become as obsessed as I am)! I have to say it is very heavy in fighting and politics, which is a nice contrast to regular Shounen style, and helps to make this a story that anyone can fall in love with!
2.5 maybe?? Ok, so I originally watched the anime of this one (the anime doesn't cover the full manga and it seems that the anime won't be continuing so ya). I've definitely have missed the characters of this series and it's fun to be back with them. But, also (this is more of a problem with me and not this book), I think I'm in a reading slump and my brain just doesn't want to read.
I couldn't get enough of the anime version, which I watched through Netflix, so what did I decide to do? Read the actual manga.
Volume 1 creates a basic foundation for the epic adventures of Sinbad. We see that our hero despite his young age is righteous, kind and determined - attributes suited for a future king. There is something special about him, however we have yet to realise the full extent of these "special power" of his. What I like about manga's starting of our main protagonist at a young age is that we are able to see them grow as a person through their various experiences. I mean his just 14 now, and his like this! I'm excited, and you will be too!
I was much too busy with work and catching up with Magi. But hey, he is not one of the Top favorite characters in anime in ... most of ASIA for nothing. Yes. The polls resulted he was in the top 4 characters in Japan, Korea, China, India, Malaysia, and more. For those looking for an action, sparkle and happiness Naruto one piece only filled Manga... well this might not be for you. Although Shinobu writes for the same magazine that those series started at as well, she is notorious for her brutality. And her bland starts. As in Magi the beginning to many, and intentionally was very controlled. It is later on that the best parts and intricacies are revealed and become an inevitable jewel. I cannot wait to see more of Sinbad, as it directly affects the current magi plot and his character. To do this simultaneously should give her enough praise as a writer.
Volume 1 is technically the unabridged version of chapter 0 including a few chapters of volume 2, I presume, considering the latter events in chapter 0 haven't transpired here yet. Seeing the earlier years of Sinbad is not as exciting as I thought it would be. Some parts were bland, but the need to know why he is called that singularity whatever is really strong so I'd probably read on until it gets intolerable. Also, Daddy Badr is quite an amazing character. <3 He resembles adult Sinbad in features and sometimes, personality.
