This is a beautifully written story. A heartbreaking but also a heartwarming romantic tale. There is a well rounded mix of characters in this story of hardship. I really enjoyed this book and the story had me gripped from the beginning. Overall this is a very enjoyable read.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Penguin Random House UK and the author Maggie Hope for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A Daughter’s Gift is about a family struggling to stay together. When Elizabeth’s mother dies, her sisters Jenny and Alice are fostered. Aunt Betty and Uncle Ben take baby Kit and Elizabeth and Jimmy goes to the children’s home.
Elizabeth starts working at the hospital as a laundry maid and trains to be a nurse where she meets Captain Jack Benson and falls in love with him. Will their differences in class keep them apart? Elizabeth has to chose between helping her sister Jenny who has been adopted by a cruel farmer or her love for Jack.
My first Maggie Hope book and it certainly won’t be my last. A real heart wrenching story, beautifully written that depicted loss, hardship and love. I was thoroughly into this story and desperate for Elizabeth to have her happy ending!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
A Daughters Gift is the story of Elizabeth, who after the death of her mother struggles to keep her siblings together. Her Aunt takes baby Kit, her sisters are found foster homes and her brother Jimmy and herself end up in the children’s home next to the workhouse. As they grow up, Elizabeth wants to better herself, so eventually she can bring her siblings together. She starts work as a laundry maid but becomes interested and eventually starts training as a Nurse. Her brother Jimmy starts working down the pit. Elizabeth then meets Captain Jack Benson and falls in love with him. But, because they are from different social classes people and incidents in their lives stop them being together. This is a lovely heart-breaking story of love and loss and one’s determination to keep her family together. This is a real page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed this. This reminded me of books by Catherine Cookson. If you like them, you will love this. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this.
This was a great book i especially loved reading about the North East .bishop Auckland, Darlington. All about Durham and surrounding areas lizzie and her siblings were put in an orphanage after there dad disappeared and there mam died .but Jenny and Alice were fostered and poor Jenny had an awful life but lizzie left the orphanage and found where Jenny was , Jimmy the brother also left the orphanage and went down the pit . Lizzie got work in a hospital for wounded soldiers and fell in love but it was doomed Jack was the pit owner i could go on but please read it well deserved 5 STARS .
Elizabeth struggles when her mother dies leaving her and her siblings alone. Aunt Betty quickly offers to tKe baby Kit and Jenny and Alice her two young sisters are fostered out. This leaves Elizabeth and Jimmy to go into the children’s home attached to the workhouse. Through some tough years Elizabeth never forgets her vow to get her family together again. This book follows all the hardships that Elizabeth has to deal with while trying to make her dearest wish come true. A lovely read.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. Really enjoyed this book, felt as though you were actually with the characters , however though the end was a bit sudden ,could have been better.
I was kindly given an e-ARC by NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I have generally given up on traditional romance novels, I don't know why, I suppose it all became too much for me. However with A Daughter's Gift, I decided to give romance another chance.
I am kinda glad that I did? Reading this book brought back my fond memories of the time I was obsessed with historical romance. I think the book was really well written and the characters fairly interesting however I have to admit it that I wasn't as engrossed in it as I thought I might be. The worst thing is, I am not even sure why I wasn't trying to finish the book as fast as I could. The book really is a good one, the writing, the pacing and even the characters are pretty good.
Oh well.
All in all, I enjoyed the book, if it's historical fiction you are looking for, then it is for you. If it's romance you are looking for then it's definitely for you!
A Daughters Gift follows the story of Elizabeth and her struggles to try and protect her siblings after they were split up when orphaned. As she has forged herself a career to try and better her life she is put in to a quandary when she meets wounded officer Jack. Elizabeth realises she is going to have to make huge sacrifices in order to fulfil the duty she feels but at what cost?. I really enjoyed this story and the setting of the North East. The story came alive through good characterisation and the emotions were well written. The story pulled me in from the beginning and kept my attention to the very end as I became desperate to find out how it all worked out for Elizabeth. A entertaining saga I would recommend. My thanks go to the author, publisher and Netgalley in providing the arc for a honest review.
This is the story of Elizabeth and her siblings who are orphaned when there mother passes away.
The family are split up with Elizabeth and her brother being put into a home and her two other sister have been adopted out and her baby brother goes to live with their Aunt.
Elizabeth is determined to stay close to her brother's and sisters, but the care system has other ideas. Elizabeth isn't allowed to know where her two sisters have been sent. But she is determined to find out and better herself so maybe in the future she can look after her family???
But all is not as it seems and Elizabeth's dream of becoming a nurse has been destroyed, what will she do now???
Great story, really nicely paced with an interesting mix of characters.
What a truly beautiful story I simply could not put it down and hardly did so until the beautiful end. This is my first book by Maggie Hope and I look forward to many more.
Elizabeth and her four younger siblings are orphaned in 1910, a very hard time in our history and are separated from one another. Elizabeth, only 10 years old at the time, is determined to make the best of the tough life in the children’s home that her and her brother Jimmy are placed in and is vows to reunite her family one day.
A Daughter’s Gift is a beautiful romantic family saga that I highly recommend and give it a well deserved 5 stars. Lovely characters that I will remember for a long time and a great storyline.
I purchased a 12 book set of Maggie Hope’s books as the library is closed during lockdown. All very similar. Fairly enjoyable light read but so far all are orphan girl from a mining family beats adversity to train to become a nurse, meets a well off man and falls for him, various nasty things happen separating her from him but in the end true love wins.

Very much a book of its type. I was somewhat frustrated by the constant 'misses, and poor communication between the characters. One of the worst was Jimmy not mentioning Jenny to Jack ..... of course he would have done! I realise these were included to build the story but really it was just too frustrating and inconsistent.
A change from my usual read but I did enjoy this historical fiction set in the north east of England around the time of the first world war. It was a little unbelievable in places which I found a little bit frustrating but I still thought it was worthy of 4*,
A Daughter's Gift. Period story set in the North East of England. Well written and with great characters which really come alive. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. One to recommend. 4* from me. My thanks to the publisher & NetGaley for the advance reader copy.
I enjoyed this book but found some parts of it a bit 'far fetched' which is why I dropped a star rating. Nevertheless, I would recommend it to others to read.
Loved it. Being a northern lass myself I loved reading this book and just heart warming. I was drawn in from the beginning and would highly recommend and definitely read more by the author
I really loved this book! My review of this book won't do it justice at all but please bear with me while i try to gather my thoughts and make a coherrent account of this story!
This was the first book that I had read by Maggie Hope and because of the exellence of this one, I will deffinatly be looking out for more of hers!
Elizabeth Nelson, the daughter that tries to hold her family together. The few chapters when Elizabeth visits her little brother being looked after by her (horrible, disgusting, naive) Aunt, went straight to my heart! I have three younger brothers and the thought of any of them not knowing who I was and thinking that another woman was their Mother would devistate me!
It made me think of how many mothers must have gone through simeliar circumstances in that time. Absolutly horrible!
And the way that Elizabeth was treated after she was asulted by a Captain at the hospital where she was working, made me want to jump into the book and tell Matron straight!
Maggie Hope did a brilliant job of not making Elizabeth an overbearing character or,(heaven forbid) a woman that cried at very opportuity. She found a nice balance in between.
The only part of the story that I didn't like was that Elizabeth kept on doubting herself. In the middle of the book, it was almost every page that she went on about how she was sure that Jack and Jimmy didn't love her any more....it was as if she actually wanted them to shun her. And i didn't understand why she had to stay with the abusive farmer. The story wasn't very clear on that, just said that it was her own stubbornness and because she wanted to protect her sister.
Overall, a very enjoyable read! Would deffinatly read it again, and read more of Maggie Hopes books.
To start with this book was great and it had me gripped but then it just became unconvincingly coincidental, all the near misses that Jack and Elizabeth have and all the silly misunderstandings that keep them apart,it just became silly and I started to gloss over a lot of it just so I could get it finished. When Jack and Jimmy were first looking for Elizabeth and Jimmy had no idea where she could be,he thought of everywhere but their other sisters, like would it not have been one of the first places they'd look.
Ooh I did enjoy that! A wholesome, warming read. One to read with a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits. I could've read more and more of Lizzie. I'd not read Maggie Hope before and wasn't sure if I'd like it but the story was much stronger than I expected.
This book tells the story of Lizzie who is determined to do the bes for her siblings when her mother dies. She falls in love with Captain Jack Benson, but he seems far above her in station especially when she loses her nursing job. She overs in with her sisters abusive foster father to try and help her sister Jenny have a better life and it seems her chance of happiness has gone. The book is a real page turner that kept me up reading until the early hours. I would recommend this book for fans of Dilly Court and Catherine Cookson. Thank you Netgalley for the arc
