Sex is a gift. A beautiful, wonderful, complicated, desperate gift.
Rhys Gunnerson was fine, despite all the effing weddings on his calendar. His bar was in the black, he had time to play his guitar, and he had sex when he wanted it. Easy. And he’d fully recovered from his divorce … almost.
Nicole Freeman was fine, or at least she will be once she buys a house. She had friends, a good job, a mean roundhouse kick, and almost enough money to buy a home where no one could ask her to leave.
The hot guy at the kickboxing gym is a distraction, a fantasy. But when his protective instincts kick in and she moves above his bar, the fantasy starts to become reality. Attraction and slow burn burst into flames, but something’s wrong. When doubts and fears threaten to hold them back, can they find a way to have their turn at the happiness everyone deserves?
A friends to lovers, survivor, protector hero, steamy romance about not just surviving, but thriving, and the journey to accept ourselves and allow the unstoppable power of real love to heal us.
Nicole was raised in a culture of sexual shame. Though there are no flashbacks, her memories and her struggle to overcome the trauma she experienced in that environment are included on the page.
Your Turn is a wonderful story about overcoming past trauma and surviving. Nicole and Rhys both have trauma and things from their past that have left them both a little damaged and broken, along with walls that are so high it's going to take a miracle to break them down (or maybe just the right person). When Nicole moves in above Rhys' bar, he is everything you could ever want in a man. He's protective, understanding and patient. I really enjoyed this slow burn and watching Nicole and Rhys slowly break down each others walls and fall in love with one another. I thought it was so sweet.
I'm late to the series, but this book reads well as a standalone. It's my first Christina Braver novel about a brave and innocent young woman and a protective and thoughtful man destined to fall in love.
Rhys Gunnerson is a former tech genius turned bar owner who is trying to find himself after his cheating, pregnant ex left him for his boss. His ex wanted Fifty Shades, and Rhys wanted romance. After that, he thought he was happy running the bar, playing his guitar, and having an occasional fling here or there. Then she came to town. The intelligent, independent sparring partner with the killer smile and lethal kick was "too damn beautiful, and Rhys was in deep shit".
Nicole Freeman has been on her own since her parents kicked her out of the house at a young age. Her upbringing was manipulative and controlling where women were considered weak and sex was shameful. On her own, she learned to count on herself and take control of her life. She met friends and found therapists who helped her heal by being strong and loving her body. Her attraction to the hot man at the gym was new to her. He was out of her league, but she wanted to explore her feelings. Could he be the one to help her get over the "sneaky shame of her upbringing"?
Rhys and Nicole are made for each other. Rhys acts like he hates attending weddings, but it's his divorce talking. He's such a loyal and considerate man and he is so patient and understanding about Nicole's need to be independent. I also love the fact that Rhys is so supportive of his friend Alex who has come out. In fact, Alex and his partner, Brett give sage advice to both Rhys and Nicole. Nicole is innocent, but she's definitely not weak. Most assuredly she is a badass who wants a home of her own and to find someone to spend her life with. It's sad she had to walk away from her family due to sex shaming, but she is not afraid to learn and ask questions. In fact, her knitting group called the Nip and Purl is a great place to learn about sex from experienced women. If only I had found a place like that when I was young.
In the end, the lovers overcome their doubts and fears with compassion and honesty as they find that home is where the heart is.
This captivating story will make you laugh, cry, and love the journey Rhys and Nicole take to find the happiness they deserve. Family and friends are a plus in this series and I can't wait to go back and read more about them in the earlier books.
Thank you to Ms. Braver for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
This book was incredible! Such a unique love story and I truly loved the growth from several characters in this story! Lots of different growth moments but still only two POV.
There was one passage that completely moved me to tears. I will paraphrase it; “ Leaning on people does not make you weak. For people like us, who have been let down by those we should depend on, it’s scary. But if we choose to lean on others, it means were brave not weak.” 😮 😭
I definitely had mentally prepared for the trigger warning of sexual shame but I feel the author addressed it wonderfully. I hope everyone will give this book a read.
To sum it up best: It’s a “friends to lovers, survivor, protector hero, steamy romance about not just surviving, but thriving, and the journey to accept ourselves and allow the unstoppable power of real love to heal us.” -greys promotions
Your Turn is a wonderfully written story of being true to yourself, of passion, of breaking down walls and of healing.
From the first meeting with Nicole, you know that you are going to fall in love with her, her strength and determination she had to break free from her controlling parents make her the perfect match for Rhys, the man who has closed himself off from relationships since his ex-wife’s betrayal, was not expecting the sassy yet shy Nicole to start to make him feel again and while in some places this story is smooth sailings there are a lot of little bumps in the road before they get their HEA, but to be fair, this story could not have been told any other way.
I missed the first three books in the series so I will be adding them to my TBR list, but Your Turn works well as a stand-alone, I also enjoyed the secondary characters as well, they really bring this book to life, a great not to be missed read.
1- i really enjoyed the way the discussion of sexual shame in this book. i’ve never really read anything that portrayed it in the way this book did. nicole’s story is so relatable to many, and i loved reading about how she dealt with that shame.
2- i did however not really connect with the characters or their relationship. it felt okay to me but nothing more, and i found myself thinking “how did they get to this point” a lot. pacing and characters are really important elements for me when im reading, which is why my rating went down.
3- the side characters were probably the best part of this book, they were funny and added plot to the story.
Rhys Gunnerson is content with his life. He owns a bar that he runs with his brother, he has a boat he’s been rehabbing that’s ready to go, his guitar, and his friends. Ever since his divorce, he has no interest in finding love, just a willing partner when he needs one.
Nicole Freeman is happily taking care of herself. She has a good job that she enjoys, a few friends, she’s saving money to buy a house, and she’s a bad@ss kicker boxer at the local gym. Nicole left home at 18 when her very strict parents threw her out for having sex with her boyfriend. In their strict religious beliefs, a woman’s body was merely a tool for the male to use and to bear children. She doesn’t share those beliefs and is slowly coming into herself sexually.
Rhys and Nicole meet at the gym when he offers to be her sparring partner. They become friends and she moves into the apartment above the bar until she can save enough for a house. Their attraction is a slow burn to steamy but not everything is right yet. They have to work together to find happiness and put their pasts behind them.
This is a beautifully written story of two damaged people who find each other, healing, and love together. The author handled the subject of sexual shaming very well, making sure that Nicole’s journey of healing was filled with compassion.
This is book 4 in the Perry Harbor series but can be read as a standalone.
Rhys Gunnerson is a bar owner and fine after his divorce, living on his own doing his own thing, except for all the family weddings on his calendar. He plays his guitar and sings at night right before closing, music is his happy place. He was fine. Until Nicole Freeman walked into his life … well or kicked her way.
Nicole ran from her home when she was young to get away from his parents’ lifestyle. She is determined to live on her own and make her own way. Her goal is to save enough money to buy a home, where she was safe, and no one would ask her to leave. Except Rhys just won’t stay out of her head.
I really enjoyed this book and I really enjoyed getting to know these two characters. Rhys and Nicole, while both messed up from things that happened in their past, they are loyal, caring, supportive, and strong. These two make each other better, stronger, and their relationship is full of compassion. This story will bring out all the feels and make you root for them to find their happiness. I recommend it even if you are starting in the middle of the series like I did.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review. 4.5 stars
My Favorite quote: “ All this time, I’d been looking for a place to make me feel safe. It wasn’t a building. It was a person who loved me the way you do, protected me the way you do. Anywhere with you is home.”
Wow this was such a beautiful story. Before reading this book I had no idea or information about sexual shame. I can’t believe there are women out there that have to go through that. They are told that sex is shameful and women are only meant to be subservient to men.
We meet Nicole who escaped that life at 18. She worked hard to get to where she is at. She doesn’t want to be dependent on anyone. She is a bad ass in my opinion and it is wonderful to read how far she has come.
We also meet Rhys who is one of the owners of a local bar. He was previously married and has made it known he doesn’t plan to fall in love again after his ex wife cheated on him with his boss.
Both Nicole and Rhys were going through things separately and I think both characters had tremendous growth throughout the book. Their love story is so sweet and you can really tell they both care for each other. They accept each others boundaries and take things slow. I don’t want to give away too much so I will leave it at that!
I highly recommend everyone read this book! Your turn is book 4 in a series of interconnected standalones. I plan to go back and read the whole series!
Although this is book 4 in the series, it's the only one I've read so my review is based on a standalone read. It's also the first time I've read anything from this author. I loved it! Rhys and Nicole have both survived relationships where they have been wounded and hurt by people that should love them. Instead, they have been battered and have built up walls to protect themselves. Often, however, those kinds of wounds leave scars and it's how Rhys and Nicole deal with those scars that can make or break their new relationship and it's never wise to judge a book by it's cover. There are quite a few characters, obviously from previous books, that can make navigating the various friendships and relationships a bit tricky, but this book snuck up on me with how much I enjoyed it. I would gladly read more from this author.
This is the fourth book in this incredible series, and this is Rhys and Nicole’s story. Rhys is divorced and has a bar, plays his guitar, and has flings whenever he wants. Nicole has trauma from her past but is content with the direction her life is going, and she and Rhys cross paths at the kickboxing gym and become sparring partners. When Nicole moves in above his bar, Rhys is protective, patient, and understanding. This is a well written story which is a slow burn story, with chemistry, family, friendships, trauma, survival, emotions, acceptance, healing, romance, and love, which leads to an entertaining and moving page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This is Book 4 in the Perry Harbor Series by this author, and can be read as a standalone. It is a friends to lovers romance between Nicole and Rhys. These flawed characters and the unique plot make for an entertaining read. It is a slow burn love story with drama and steam, sexual tension and chemistry, and twists and turns, plus appealing secondary characters to keep the reader interested. An emotional read.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Grey's Promotions and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Great contemporary romance, set in PNW, with sex positive discussion.
The heroine, Nicole, grew up in a very conservative environment, and was kicked out of her house at 17 for having premarital sex and refusing to marry her boyfriend. She grew up learning that women should feel shame about their bodies and sex and has spent 8 years unlearning all of that with therapy, education, and sex positive friends.
The hero, Rhys, is still bitter about his divorce and only allows himself hookups, no relationships.
These 2 meet at the gym and build a friendly relationship, then start dating. It’s pretty basic, generally low drama.
Sex is a gift. A beautiful, wonderful, complicated, desperate gift.
A friends-to-lovers, survivor, protector-hero, steamy romance about not just surviving, but thriving, and the journey to accept ourselves and allow the unstoppable power of real love to heal us.
Rhys Gunnerson was fine, despite all the effing weddings on his calendar. His bar was in the black, the crowd liked his guitar playing, and he had sex when he wanted it. Easy. His ex-wife was happy, and he will be too, once he recaptured the part of him she destroyed in the divorce. Nicole Freeman was fine, or at least she will be once she buys a house. She had friends, a good job, a mean roundhouse kick, and almost enough money to buy a home where no one could ask her to leave. The hot guy at the kickboxing gym is a distraction, a fantasy. But when she moves above his bar, the fantasy starts to become reality. She’s ready. She can do this. He doesn’t want a relationship with the beautiful woman at the gym and her ball-crunching kicks, but her incredible singing voice along with her courage and softness is more than Rhys can resist. Attraction and slow burn, burst into flames, but something is wrong. As Nicole reveals she grew up learning sex and women’s bodies were bad, Rhys, with his bone-deep protective instincts, wants to show her she’s not bad and neither is sex. But sex is complicated for them both. The two embark on a journey to forgive the past and create a better future, one neither of them dared to hope for. But scars run deep. Will they let the doubts and fears hold them back, or will they each finally get to have their turn at the happiness everyone deserves?
Loved Rhys and Nicole's story! Beautifully written and heartfelt! Their journey wasn't easy but so worth the read!
Oh how does this series keep getting better?!? Rhys has done the big tech world now he is happy owning a bar with his brother and living his life. He is extremely close with his family and will do anything for them and his friends. Nicole is very independent and is a fighter. She has been on her own for a while now and is use to fending for herself. Growing up a lot of things were drilled into Nicole’s head…things that still haunt her and mess with her head till this day. When Rhys and Nicole meet they both have reservations but the pull is to strong. The connection is undeniable and the chemistry is crazy hot. The closer these two get, the more walls they both have come crumbling down. This was a great read with an amazing story. Nicole is sassy but very innocent and Rhys is protective and oh so sweet with her. I love getting caught up on previous characters and enjoyed getting to know some better. I am really enjoying this fast paced series. This book was emotional with several laugh out loud moments which made it very entertaining. I can’t wait to read what’s next from this author.
This is Book 4 in the Perry Harbor Series and it’s is a friends to lovers romance you will enjoy. This is Nicole and Rhys’s story. Nicole is just finding herself and trying to find a place of her own in the world away from her family. Rhys is also trying to find his footing again after his divorce and the betrayal from his ex wife. He is not looking for anything but to keep his bar running smoothly. These two souls were just two broken souls who didn’t know they were the others missing pieces. They meet at the gym they both work out at and Nicole makes one kick of an impression. I loved that they built a genuine friendship yet the chemistry was there and too strong to deny. I really enjoyed getting to know these two characters on their own and together. Loved that they are both broken in their own way yet together they make each other better, stronger. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend.
