I read Confessions and Wicked. I liked Confessions more: it was a better story, more realistic and more complex in character development. Also, it took place in Holland. It reminded me a bit of The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
Wicked was a fantasy with magic taking over when realism couldn't be achieved. The characters were more shallow and less developed as people. The story was disjointed at times.

Amazing. I got this book after I saw the musical, and I have to say that I liked the book more (I'm so sorry Broadway, I love you too). Any old who, Elphaba just always manages to amaze me, and by the time the book ended, I have to say Gregory McGuire did a great job painting her in different light. After everything that happened to her... well, when she's tripping Nanny and locking everyone else out and all her friends are dead, I say go ahead and kill the little beast. Call me cold-hearted, but that is some quality way of writing. From "Your Little Dog Too" to "Beautiful and misunderstood", I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

I loved this series. This is what I wish would be considered canon for the land of Oz, but I know that the original books were made strictly for young children. It's a bit dark, but the characters are real and actually make sense. You feel for Elphaba and her cause. The characters throughout the series are all interconnected. The reader on the audiobooks gives each character their own voice and it makes the experience amazing. I would love to see a movie be made from this series. It would have been nice had Maguire pulled more characters from the original series of books, it would have tied them together a bit more.

I love Gregory Maguire! I just love how he is able to tell the "other side" of a story. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is actually my favorite of his books but Wicked comes a close second. Lost is my least favorite, I actually didn't like that one at all but the others are so great I'm willing to over look it. I can't wait for the 3rd book in the Wicked series to come out! That one is going to be all about the Cowardly Lion.

These books are awesome for anyone who likes fairytales. McGuire gives old tales a new twist as you see the story unfold from the "villian's" point of view.
