Andy Moralee is no longer the young and terrified recruit who had last set foot upon New Earth two years ago. Decorated for his bravery during the final hours of the invasion and promoted to lance corporal, he is still troubled by his memories and haunted by nightmares. He finds himself unable to cope with life back on Earth, and so he returns to the red planet, the only place where he feels he belongs.
But New Earth has changed as well. A growing insurgency threatens to turn the planet into a battleground once again, but this time the enemy has the ability to melt away into the population, and even turn the Union's weapons against them. Nobody can be trusted, even old friends.
Quickly swept up in the gathering storm Andy finds himself in the command of a section that resents his early promotion, and during the battle that follows his leadership, his loyalty, and even his faith in his comrades are put to the ultimate test in the face of an enemy that will stop at nothing.

Not as brutal as the first in the series, this book is still very fast-paced and furious as the reader sticks side-by-side with Andy Moralee and his newest dilemmas as he leads a platoon into battle against insurrectionists. Friendship takes on a whole new aspect under these conditions. So does trust and loyalty, concepts that the author delves into and shows to be much more complicated than one would suppose. Once more I finished the last line and ordered the next book in the series and started it immediately. The author does an amazing job of making the reader feel like part of the action, totally invested in Andy's life.
I really enjoyed this second offering, there is a real progression in the story and in my opinion the writing as well. I can really see a change in the characters and I also come away feeling that the characters are very "real". I look forward to reading the next book when time permits. I have to admit that so far this series has keep me pleasantly surprised and I very glad that I stumbled upon it.
The second book in the Union series, we again follow Andy through a war zone. While there was some sentences that didn't make sense or missing some punctuation, it was minor enough that it didn't detract from the overall story. The author does a great job pulling you into the world he's created and makes you curious as to what happens next. Even though I'm not much into military sci-fi, this series makes me want to venture further into the genre.
I didn't think that the first book in this series could be improved upon, how wrong I was. The style of writing by this author chains the reader to the story. The adventures of Corporal Moralee and his platoon will pump you up and stir your imagination into life. The story is adrenaline packed and will have you losing any sense of time. Can't wait to read the next episode. Just brilliant.
Second book in the series and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Andy is a little older, a little wiser, and in for more intense fighting. It was interesting to watch him grow up and become a man while he was still just a boy. That is what war does to young men, so Mr. Richards definitely nailed it. Now time to read book three "Eden".
Crow and lancejack are on the mark when it comes to telling it like it is for the infantryman. The only thing I didn't like is my ptsd flaring. Thank you for your candid open up front sharing of what you felt in combat. I still have trouble talking about it, though I have bad dreams still I'm seeking out others like me, finally ready to talk.
I enjoyed this book more than the first, which I found overly depressing with too few bright points or even humour. Phil's writing has improved although the narrative is still fairly unidimensional.
The war on New Earth continues, and Moralee keeps soldiering on. This one gets into guerrilla warfare and city fighting. If you like military SF, then this worth your time.
My favorite part about this book was the character interaction. Luckily he explained a lot about military/tactical aspects, which was good for me because I don't have knowledge of that type already.
