An enthralling tale set against the pageantry and decadence of first-century Rome, The Spear of Longinus chronicles youthful tragedy, the quest for revenge, hard-fought military campaigns, and burgeoning love, as well as the mysterious prophecies that haunt Tiberius Longinus, the Roman centurion who speared Jesus of Nazareth on his cross of sorrows.
Unfolding throughout the far-flung reaches of the Roman Empire, the sweeping epic – from the imperial reign of Augustus to that of Vespasian – is a riveting saga of the hero’s adventures and his pursuit of the love of Helena Rufinus, his beguiling childhood sweetheart and the heroine of Rome.
Aficionados of "Ben Hur" and "The Robe" will relish the historical novel’s exotic settings, deadly intrigues, deep friendships, enduring love, and the hero’s reluctant journey toward faith. All inexorably intertwine in an increasingly cultured yet ruthless era when Rome's pagan emperors vowed to eradicate the Jews and the fledgling Christian religion.
Reynold J. Levocz, whose studies in ancient history as well as on-site research throughout Europe imbue the novel with rich historical detail, is a retired executive, entrepreneur, inventor and first-time author. Married, the father of four children, and blessed with sixteen grandchildren. Ron resides in the rural setting of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, in the historic Brandywine River Valley. He is writing a second novel about Constantine the Great and the impact of the spear of Longinus on Constantine’s destiny.
While most historical authors get caught up in the smallest of details, making their book an epic battle within itself to read, Mr. Levocz has given detail enough to make the visualization, but keeps the story moving and riveting. The character's depth is wonderfully captured, from heroic antics, to the sincere devotion to one another, family and country. I found myself holding my breath, laughing, and on the brink of tears as I journeyed with them page after page. I look forward to the second in the series, and congratulate the author on writing one of the best books I've read in years!
This isn't the type of book I usually read, but it had me captivated from the first page. Part thriller, part romance, part history (although some liberties were taken with history), I simply could not put it down. Taking place during the early Roman Empire, the dialogue seemed fresh and contemporary. There were scenes of torture, death and gruesome battles that made me grateful for living in more civilized times...although some of the philosophies expressed from a couple of the main characters certainly resonate in the present. Descriptions of the many, varied locales were vivid and, personally having visited a few of them, brought back some fond memories. Well written and thoroughly enjoyable. A "Good Read", indeed!
Combining intriguing historical research and creative fiction, "The Spear of Longinus" weaves a captivating story of love and courage around little known pieces of(Roman) history, to present the reader with a delightful and beautifully written novel. Ron Levocz is adapt at vivid descriptions and scene building and has created an immensely entertaining book...a real page turner.
Extremely well-researched and well-written historical fiction, I really enjoyed reading it. I especially enjoyed the one reference to the future of Longinus that was made throughout the book, and that I didn't understand until the meaning was revealed in the very last chapter of the book. Excellent read!
My fascination with Ancient Rome and Biblical times always seems to have new reasons to grow. One of the Biblical figures that I find the most intriguing is the centurion who pierced the side of Jesus on the cross with a spear. Known in the Christian tradition as Longinus, the Roman warrior is the central character(and narrator) of an awesome historical novel by Mr. Reynold Levocz, called THE SPEAR OF LONGINUS, of which I had the honor of receiving a signed copy.
There’s a lot to like about this book. The language is beautifully rendered, making the descriptions and dialogue in the novel sound authentic without modernizing it for no reason. The manner in which the characters speak sounds true to the period, which is, in my view, crucial for any historical novel.
The plot is another superb achievement. Telling the story of a seemingly marginal character from the Bible is an undertaking that requires a great deal of creativity and a serious amount of research. The journey of Longinus, starting in what is nowadays known as Romania(the fact that Mr. Levocz enjoyed his research trip to my country enough to make Romania an important location in his novel is another reason for which I’m honored to have this book on my shelf), provides readers with an epic adventure, in which faith, love and courage play crucial roles. Longinus himself is a complex and compelling character, and it is a pleasure to follow him on his way from a battle-hardened Roman soldier known for his staunch atheism(read the book to discover the tragic circumstances of that) to a devoted follower of Christ. He’s far from being that “spotless” type of hero. He’s very familiar with death and its impact. Yet, at the same time, he seems to have an innate perception of what is morally right. His belief in Christ does not just “poof” inside of him: one does not simply go from slaying Mongols to love and forgiveness, and I see this as being the reason for which this is such a beautifully written book: the journey towards belief is realistic and gritty, which makes it relatable. It’s a story that has something for everyone: adventure, battles, faith, love, impeccable research and complex characters, in a sprawling saga-like story. A truly masterful debut! Can’t wait for the sequel on Constantine the Great! As for the rating……Lloyd Douglas would be proud!! 10 out of 5! Thank you, Mr. Levocz! Great job!
I do not read much fiction (except for Stephen King) but when I do, it's usually historical fiction. This book's time period is definitely outside of what I have read for historical fiction which has been on the American civil war and the early American West. But I figured I'd give it a shot and I'm glad I did as this was a very interesting book.
The spear of Longinus refers to the spear that pierced Christ on his cross of sorrows. The book tells the story of Centurion Tiberius Longinus from his childhood to his death. Two-thirds of the book is prior to Christ crucifixion and I was not sure when I started this book how the author would include Christ and the Christian movement within his story but I was pleased with how he did. The pace of the book is very quick (except for the last chapters which are needed to "wrap-up" of the story which I will give the author a break on) so it read very easy and very fast.
As I wrote before, this is a time period outside of my expertise therefore I'm still working through which parts are historical and which parts are fiction. I will say that I'm very familiar with the story of Christ and this portion of the story seemed to closely follow the Gospels. It was definitely a time of horrific violence but really when hasn't the human race bordered on barbarism? Even now the Mideast is plagued by the barbaric deeds of the religion of peace.
The Spear of Longinus is a compelling read. Despite this story being the authors first novel his ability to merge history with fiction ranked with many of the more seasoned authors of historical fiction. Just for starters the characters were developed with meticulous detail enabling the reader to understand the persona of each and every actor. In addition, the fragile balance between life and transience in 1st Century Rome was achieved through the authors skillful interplay of courage, fear, honor, deceit, loyalty, betrayal, pride, humility, freedom, dominence, wisdom and ignorance. The retelling of the wars, the cross, the ressurection and the horrific atrocities that sometimes sit unrestrained in the human heart was told with thoughtful respect for his well researched history. With all the trauma of the era the author was able to weave a profound tale of trust, friendship and love that ultimately survived and prevailed. This reader was engaged from the opening paragraph to the last word. Hopefully there is another novel in the making from this author.
I have mixed feelings about this book and have a hard time knowing how to rate it. I was excited to win it in Goodreads Giveaway. The book is extremely well-written and researched. I would give it at least a five for historical accuracy. There is so much blood and gore in this book that it was hard to stomach it at time but that's the way it was back in the days of ancient Rome. This book gives you a thorough history lesson without being drab. You learn about Rome, the Mongols, and the early Christian faith through the eyes of Tiberius. The characters are well developed and realistic. And yet...and this is where my personal feelings come in. I would hesitate to classify it as Christian novel. Jesus taught love and peace but it seemed like war and revenge were glorified in this book. I believe that the true Christians went underground and never fought to defend themselves. So in the that respect I was disappointed in the book so I had to give it a lower rating even though I appreciated how well it was written and researched and deserves a much higher rating.
We just finished reading the book, "The Spear of Longinus," and we thoroughly enjoyed it. A good read. We thought it was excellent--a riveting chronicle of love and war, so expertly written and with amazingly detailed research. It has all the necessary ingredients of a good book, touching on acts of love, deceit, cruelty, sacrifice and faith that shape the main characters, the most prominent of which is Tiberus Longinus, who was the person who speared Jesus when he was dying on the cross. That spear became his talisman as this decent man stuggled to find the Word. We would recommend it to all readers who favor historical novels set in the turbulent time of the Roman Empire. Surely, put this fine book on your reading list.
An excellent read expertly weaving historical fact with fiction detailing the Longinus family saga from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of ancient Roman patrician society. The love/hate relationships, political intrigue, and epic campaign battles with hated enemies are brought to life through the eyes of the central figure and narrator of this storied novel. The introduction of the founding principles of the Christian religion against the pagan Roman gods brings forth an element of anxiety and concern for the Longinus patriarch which changes his life in ways not even he could anticipate.
I found this book to an engaging historical novel. It is set in the Roman Empire during and after the time of Christ. Author Reynold Levocz obviously did extensive research to be able to describe in detail the customs, architecture and military strategies of the period. The reader also gets an in-depth look at the Roman Empire and the brutality practiced by those who governed. The main character Tiberius Longinus ascends to a position of power and witnesses first hand the rise of Jesus, his crucifixion and its aftermath. The result is transformational for both him and his wife Helena. I found the book to be masterfully written and an excellent read.
The author is to be commended on his ability to draw you into a time in history. The characters and settings are detailed enough allowing me to visualize and be part of the time and place that this story takes place.
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey through time that the author takes us through. Passion, love, dedication, perserverence and honor are some of the engaging character traits I enjoyed in this story. And adding the historical aspects of events in this time - gods,God, conquest and battles made this a great read for me.
I highly recommend anyone with an interest in history - Roman Empire, Byzantine, etc. to pick this book up. Well done Reynold Levocz.
A truly good read. It is very well researched, dramatically sound and keeps you at it. The author has obviously labor hard and well. He's come up with really good fiction embedded comfortably in fact. The details are fascinating but not boring. It is easy to see one's self journeying the ways of Jerusalem and Rome. the characterization is colorful and valid. You'll know these people. There's a fair balance of peace against violence, romance against anger, jealousy and greed, success against failure. The plot does not disappoint. I recommend this work highly.
What a great read! You don't even have to be a fan of historical fiction to like this one. It has elements in it that every reader should find enjoyable: action, suspense, a wonderful and captivating love story, and an amazing twist at the end that you won't see coming. This would make a great gift to an adult family member or friend as the Easter season approaches. It is so well written that it's impossible to believe that this is Mr. Levocz's first published novel. Looking forward to Constantine with growing anticipation!
The Spear of Longinus captured me with its magnificent storytelling. The story in this wonderfully written first novel from RJ Levocz is highly captivating while remaining historically accurate throughout. The novel encompasses so much emotion and action that makes it very enjoyable for the reader. Mr. Levocz brought the first century to life in a way I have never read before!
I would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone!
The story is captivating. It contains action, romance, history, intrigue, strategy and drama. The author provides vivid descriptions and details which make you feel that you are actually witnessing the story unfold. Also of interest was the strong roles which women maintained, not ostentatiously but with powerfully effective results, influencing the circumstances and relationships of the main character and Romen society.
I was given the opportunity to read this for free in exchange for an honest review from goodreads.
I have not read that much history about the Roman era, especially from that part of the world. Most of it has been through the invasion of England, so this was new for me. I must say it was a beautiful story! I was hooked from the beginning, and putting the mythology of the Spear of Destiny in there was just perfect! A beautiful epic, a must read!
I absolutely loved and enjoyed the book the author intertwined factual history with fiction so well that you did not know where one began and ended. His gift for detail was remarkable. At times I felt that I was actually walking in the footprints of the characters. I myself, enjoys historical fiction. I understand that this is the authors first book. I now feel that another should follow. His writing is easy to read and totally enjoyable.
The Spear of Longinus is a great read, I enjoyed it very much. The writing is well done and the author did a great job using historical facts to create a captivating story and character. Levocz made this story interesting and did not let his interest in the historical aspects overshadow the character's journey. I found myself constantly surprised as the story progressed. I'm so happy to have received this book and can not wait for the next book.
I've fininshed the book and all I can say is ….Fabulous!!! I could not put it down, I read it every chance I got. A MUST read for everybody. So many twists and turns, great writing and I wish that this could be made into a movie. It would make a great Epic film.
It is full of adventure, passion, romance, and patience. A very good read. I enjoyed this book so much that I read it again for the 2nd time. Loved it!
This is a very good read. The Author has done his research well, including the cultural and military history, the geographic locations, the interplay and intrigues of the Roman leaders and a very devoted love story. The plot moves quickly and the book is hard to put down.
There is a lot to learn from this book and I would recommend it to any one interested in early Roman history and the beginnings of Christianity.
I just finished reading this work by author RJ Levocz, and all I can say is "spell binding". From the time you open the book the story reaches out ,and draws you in,holding your attention so intensely, you regret having to put it down for even a moment. If you enjoy romance ,Roman history, epic battles, honor, and human triumph, then this is a book for you. Can't wait to read his next book.
Great Book Especially appealing for its accurate historical depiction of the Roman empire in the time of Christ.
Fun read with a blend of romance, intrigue and mystery The author's effort at historical accuracy shows. His research was well done and adds to a understanding of the novel's characters!
I am a fan of Roman historical novels and this book was a real joy to read. It captured my interest from the very beginning. The twists and turns keep a reader engaged. We are impressed with the author's first book and are looking forward to many more books to follow. Anyone who wants to immerse into past of Roman culture and society would truly love this book.
I was transported back to that time in history when violence ruled the planet (not like now). It was a page turner that was difficult to put down. The only regret was that a sequel was not available... yet!
Highly recommend this book; great story telling of epic nature with intriguing characters and main character romance; interesting twists to storyline that for me created an exciting page turner of a novel! GREAT READ and one of those books that left a lasting impression....

The Spear of Longinus by Levocz is a great book and kept the readers attention from start to finish. The writer managed to weave a love story, historical data and numerous action scenes in one seamless read. Would highly recommend this book.
This book presented an excellent history of the time; well researched. But it was also a story about love, family, and the birth of christianity. The author also wants to warn the United States not to make the same mistakes that the Roman empire made.
