BOUNCE BACK FROM WHATEVER LIFE THROWS AT YOU

Stressful situations are a fact of life. Job insecurity, financial burden, relationship doubt are all too familiar. Happiness guru Liggy Webb is here to help us all find positivity and inner strength to cope with stressful situations. Arming you with a personal toolkit to handle day to day challenges, and providing strategies for thriving in uncertain times Liggy shows you how to increase your ‘bouncibility’ and bounce back from whatever negative things life throws at you.

2025 had been a bit of a shit show, and I think I may be in the grip of a midlife crisis. I've tried running away (Japan & Poland - great fun but temporary distractions) and therapy (felt like she was breaking up with me at one point so I stopped going) but have not really moved past anything. This book has been sitting on tbr for ages and wasn't sure I was ever going to read it but I'm feeling desperate so gave it a go.

As far a readability goes, this is pretty good. I wasn't bored, got through it pretty quickly. As for the advice, I can see how it would be useful but I think you have to a certain sort of person to really get on board with this kinda stuff, and I'm just too negative for it. Or I'm too far in a hole and it's going to take a lot more than a book to pull me out of it.

It's also hard because I already do a lot of this stuff. I dress nice everyday, even when I just at home. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't over eat (I tend to under eat but that's a pretty long term thing), I have made lots of travel plans and goals and I will achieve them. I do smile and make jokes with people (I am aware no one wants to be around a sad sack all the time). I'm happy at work. I know there is more I could do but I'm kinda stuck.

Will try more positive thinking!

Whilst I don't think this book is for me, I can see how it would be helpful to others and worth a read, maybe something will stuck, it can't hurt!

Listened to the audio version.

Good, although quite short, book on tuning up your resilience. I find listening to books like this every now and then remind me to carry on with good habits and look after myself better, so this was a short reminder of how to keep calm, carry on and occasionally lie down and have a rest!

I love self-help books and while some can be the same old tired advice recycled I found this one very useful and written in a lively, chatty style. It felt as though I had a good friend sitting next to me looking at my life and my problems and telling me how to bounce back on a day to day basis as well as in the face of major problems.

Resilience is what makes a person able to deal with problems and stress and come out smiling. Optimism and looking on the bright side of life are a huge part of it. If you always imagine the worst in any situation you aren’t helping yourself to deal with things in a practical way and you may focus on what could happen rather than on what you can change for the better.

The author talks about seeing problems as opportunities – referred to as ‘probortunities’. Looking at problems from a different perspective may help you deal with them in more creative ways. The book is full of inspiring examples of people – famous and not so famous – who have bounced back from terrible tragedies and made something of their lives. There are also lots of inspiring quotations from many different sources.

The book starts with a questionnaire which the reader can answer to assess how resilient they already are and then goes on to look at the various aspects of resilience and ways of increasing resilience. There is the text of ‘Desiderata’ at the end together with forty things you can do to help yourself feel better, top 20 survival songs, and a section on useful resources which includes books and websites. My copy of the book is bristling with post it notes and scribbled pencil notes in the margin and I know I will be referring to it again and again.

The book I read to research this post was Resilience by Liggy Webb which is a very good book which I bought from kindle. This book is a self help book and part motivation piece of writing about having the resilience to keep going when there are problems in your life. Winston Churchill summed it up well when he said when you are going through hell, keep going. Some people assume that when they have a serious problem it's an end in itself and they will never surmount it. One thing mentioned in the book is you should bend not break and try and see it as a chance to build character and look at is there a hidden opportunity. One thing some people find when there is a major setback, once they resolve it they want to work with others in a similiar situation. I quite enjoyed reading this book and apparently the author runs things like a creative writing group and tries to help disadvantaged people. I think a lot of the things she has discovered in that role has helped her in writing this book. I was lucky enough to get this book on special offer on kindle yesterday so the price may have gone back up.

I was going through some major changes in my life, and one day it suddenly popped into my mind: “I think I need to have resilience, let me find any book about that”. I passed by the bookstore and so randomly picked this book.

I wasn’t expecting a lot from it but I was pretty much impressed.

This book has captured my attention since Liggy’s story. As I went through it, I found different quotations and ideas that I haven’t thought about and was definitely making me feel better and looking at my situation from a different perspective.

It is very easy and straightforward. It has outlined many practical and well-known systems to achieve resilience.

I initially quite liked this book, and the info is quite useful, but Webb does a disservice by bringing up more complex issues without giving time to discuss nuances, and her use of fat phobic and misogynistic terms like "a moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips". For those struggling with dietary issues health issues looking for useful and practical info I recommend Ultra Processed People.

Another issue raised is the discussion on family - people with lower resilience often have a lot more trauma making it harder for them to be resilient ( learned hopelessness), and Webb did a disservice pushing for family harmony. A supportive community is definitely important for resilience and overall wellbeing, but this is not the same as familial harmony. Do not stay with your abusers. Do not surround yourself with people who detract from your mental health.

I felt this book was more about mental wellbeing than the complexity of rebuilding resilience after overcoming trauma. Could it be useful for you? Sure, but mostly if you're struggling with resilience after loss than abuse.

This is a fantastic short book from 2013. Very practical and realistic. It lays out her philosophy, as well as a range of pathways to increase personal resilience...

Very much a guide for our times. It’s really thin on hard evidence or academic research, but is quite grounded in the practical reality of lived experience.

Certainly not the definitive resource for Emotional Intelligence, but this book serves as a good complement to other resources and training. It's worth a quick read.

An enjoyable read with some good tips for remaining stoic in the face of adversity.

Another memorable concept is "Probortunity", a fusion of the words 'problem' and 'opportunity', meaning to look for the opportunity in every problematic situation. Project Managers, with a risk/opportunity management focus, will relate to this in particular.

Favourite quote: "Change provides challenges that strengthen and motivate."

Favourite tip: Ginseng tea is a great energy-boosting coffee alternative

Short read. There were a few good points in this book. The main thing I took away was the importance of having a positive outlook and being optimistic as a part of a resilient attitude.

This is a quick read, but not as helpful as I would have liked. I liked Willpower by Baumeister and Mindset by Dweck better than this book.

'Resilience' is a quick read, one that is useful in understanding human behavior in the simplest terms. There are many examples and suggestions for overcoming challenges and stiffening that backbone, but the book tends to make a 360 turn into a self-help book that encourages compliance and self-doubt. It's one thing to learn conflict resolution to make your environment a happier place, and quite the opposite when those solutions include questioning your intuition and motives when you're not the cause of the conflict. I recommend a quick skim of the book because it offers good advice, but stay away from any suggestions to over-extend your gratitude and kindness. It eventually makes for a worse environment.

There was little in here I hadn't read elsewhere and I wouldn't say it was more about resilience than other self help book. Lots on diet, exercise etc. did have some good quotes from others though. If you want a serious book on resilience, search for the Penn Resilience Programme, though that is very academic.
