A former horse trainer and computer programmer, Brian Rathbone used his old world knowledge and love of fantasy fiction to create The World of Godsland fantasy series, which begins with The Dawning of Power trilogy.
Even though this one wraps up the second trilogy, it feels like the middle of the saga. There's no real opening and no real conclusion. It draws threads from previous books and weaves them with a few new ones to paint a grim picture of the future for the characters.
The technicalities carry this one through, with a wonderfully woven tapestry of words. At times, because the story is actually three different narrations intertwined through the same time span, it can get to be a bit hard to follow who is doing what and where, but the shifts are flawless (maybe a little too flawless?) so you hardly notice them.
The primary focus of this installment shifts from the epic battle of good vs evil to the less intense battle of man vs nature while the new generation of heroes fights to discover how to live in their harsh new environment. Even the old cast is faced with a similar quandary, which provides a nice contrast between youthful vigor and older experience.
However, I also freely admit to having trouble when I finished this book in picking out what happened here, and what happened in the others because I indulged in a Godsland reading binge. I happily stand by my rating, but I'm not sure if that is for the BOOK, or for the SERIES. What a wonderful problem to have. Well done Brian!
This was an audiobook including books 4,5 and 6 of the balance of power series. It was made up of battles and battles and much personal recriminations and finally concluded with everyone together. It was sometimes a chore, but I finished it.
Technical complaint: the formatting on my Kindle version is atrocious and may have been the proverbial straw for me.
The series overall up until this point is entertaining. I stuck with it. Characters felt a little rough at times, early chapters with Catrin describing her various surroundings could be a little cringe-worthy, but it was still entertaining.
And then the end of Feral. Okay. Where will Regal take us?
Oh. I see.
On a positive note: The world itself is delightfully thorough. The mythology intrigues me.
It's always kind of rough for me to write a review of books in a series without referencing or comparing to the others in the series as well as other series. In this case I simply what to say that while I was still curious to find out how this tale finally ends (since this is the 6th book, not just the 3rd in this set). While I spent half the time grumbling about how darned many dragons there are, when the first trilogy kept talking about them as ancient legend, myths, before stumbling onto "the last of their kind"... I found the split tale of Allette both intriguing and frustrating. In simplest terms, after 5 books of building up... and this last one building to an all out war, I felt rather deflated at the end. The bits that NEEDED explaining received barely a mention and the bits that were almost spelled out were not terribly surprising or enlightening, and still left with more questions than answers.
If you've read the first trilogy and are contemplating the second... be warned. Unless you find that the tale continues beyond this book (telling more of Allette and Sinjin and the rest) you may enjoy it right up until the end. Or maybe I'm too picky, and want too much resolution... or simply expected something else.
I have to agree with Erika.....I was very disappointed in this last book. I saw no purpose in the addition of the totally new characters. I liked the characters but they appear out of nowhere and end up there. I felt like the world was saved in the last few pages by people that ended up being more powerful than the main character? Hmmmm I know that the secret island would come into play somewhere along the line but the ending of the book was just so sudden.....what happened after mom was found? Was she alone for all of that time on that hidden island? Who was the person that was seen on the island in an earlier book? Seems like there was a book 7 planned at some time? Many questions left unanswered. I liked the mythology of the book and the fantasy with the dragons and magic...but I did get tired of so much fighting...always fighting and never really winning, just getting tired and going off to lick wounds.

This book ended the Balance of Power Trilogy & is the 6th book of 9 in the overall World of Godsland Series. In this book the author has delivered in spades, continuing on with familiar characters while introducing a number of fascnating new ones as well. All six volumes thus far were each well worth the first reading, as well as more readings in the future. I can't wait to see what occurs over the next 3 books!
I really enjoyed this series. It was well written, the characters were easy to identify with, and the imagery was wonderful!!!! But, to tie up 5 books in just a few pages left more holes, and questions than it solved. Maybe the author was under a time crunch.
I have to say I'm disappointed in this installment. The story felt like it dragged on for the majority of the book, only to feel rushed and incomplete at the end. I got the impression that Rathbone either did not have a clear vision of where he wanted the story to go, or he did not have the time/pages to tell it right.
I'm a little disappointed in the ending, but I'm not sure if that's the writing or because I didn't want it to end. I would love to see more in this series, and wait anxiously to see what else this author writes.
An amazing ending to an amazing series! The final book was exciting and a little different from the rest. Everything was brought together in a climactic ending which leaves itself open for future Godsland adventures. I can't wait to see what Brian Rathbone does next!
