One of my character flaws is the inability to leave a series unfinished. I never should've started this book, considering how much I hated the first one, but I did so anyway.
This book's just one disaster onto the next. Nothing that happened made any sense, and everything was just a wreck.
Let's begin with the plot. This whole story, as I mentioned in my review of the first book, is incredibly dumb. So, skimming over that fact, let's talk about what's left of the plot, which, to be honest, isn't much. The last book ended with Dawn, the main character, getting her blood sucked by Victor, the weird, creepy vampire love interest. I thought she was dead, and was overjoyed at the idea, but apparently she somehow managed to survive. Which was disappointing. Anyways, everyone has suddenly figured out that there are these different types of vampires called 'day walkers,' who can walk in the sun, which is just so convenient for the plot. Also, apparently Day Walkers somehow manage to become normal vampires when they die, so their bodies can burn in the sun. So there's that. This new development had zero impact on the plot, other than saving Dawn from having to go give her dead brother and actual burial (he was a Day Walker, but when he died, his body turned to ash). It's also just incredibly stupid.
Also, why are there just a bunch of idiotic teens running around trying to stop a crazy vampire? Where are all the adults? I was so confused, since these teens need serious assistance. Anyway, I'm all for a bunch of teens saving the world, but usually there are at least a few adult side characters who offer guidance. This made the whole thing even more unrealistic, since this story doesn't even take place in a fantasy world.
This leads us to the romance. Oh, my god. This was the downfall of the entire book. Victor is such a creep, I swear. He's also incredibly contradicting. For example, he'll tell Dawn that they can't be together because he's a vampire, but then kisses her two seconds later anyways. Also, Dawn is so dumb and weak when it comes to Victor. She only sees what she wants to see, and even when he's being a complete jerk and physcopath, she still takes his side, or chooses so ignore it all together. Which is just wonderful. Also, the romance trope here is kind of a weird twist of enemies to lovers. HOW DO YOU MESS UP THE BEST ROMANCE TROPE SO HORRIBLY?? This romance had me rolling my eyes every two seconds, and wanting to go beat some sense into the both of them.
I don't think I liked a single character in this book. Teagan was stupid and couldn't do anything on her own. Michael would not stop pining after Dawn, which was so pathetic. Michael was actually okay for the half of the book, until he did the most stupidest thing that anyone ever did in this book, which is pretty impressive. When someone ACCIDENTALLY bumps into Dawn because he was looking at his phone, Michael (to the rescue) holds him in a chokehold, slams him against the wall, and grabs the phone out of his hand and tosses it into the street where a car runs over it. ALL OF THIS OVERREACTION FOR ACCIDENTALLY BUMPING INTO SOMEONE. If only I could break someone's phone every time someone bumped into me. And the most absurd part of it all, was that no one seemed to think this was out of the ordinary. The man - whose phone got wrecked and who got thrown against a wall - doesn't seem to mind, and just walks away. Dawn is all, "Oh, Michael. You're my hero!" It's so strange, and I can't think of anyone doing this in real life. Well, I guess either way, he's still better than Victor, who is, as said before, an incredibly contradicting, self absorbed, creep.
Moving on, the plot twists in this book were very easy to predict. The whole thing where we realize that Dawn is actually a descendant of a vampire family, was the most easy thing to guess. There were literally were no other plot twists besides that, and the whole story was very boring.
I have saved a whole paragraph for the most annoying thing in this book: Dawn herself. She's so incapable, and can't do anything on her own. Half the time, she's moping around because things aren't going her way, and the other half, she's thinking about Victor NON-STOP. She expects all her friends to start liking and being friends with vampires, even though she herself hated all vampires until Victor came along. She doesn't take a step back and try to imagine how her friends must be feeling, and instead just goes along and judges them for being afraid or skeptical. I hate her so, so much. As if that isn't bad enough, we will never forget the fact that Dawn has had a hard life, because SHE KEEPS BRINGING IT UP EVERY PAGE. Like, I get it. You've gotten over some hard challenges in your life, but please stop reminding me about it every second!
And now, I want to take the time to judge the names in this book. Dawn - literally the stupidest name for a heroine, and purely there so the author can make puns with her name for the titles. And guess what the villain's name is? Sin. Yeah, that's right. Because he's a SIN. Wow, how original. And weirdly, Sin is the only character I actually didn't mind.
Also, the writing style in this book was horrific. Please. I couldn't stand the random exclamations. I have never seen an exclamation mark appear so often in a book.
Really, the only thing I gained from this book was getting the chance to exercise my eyeballs, purely because I couldn't stop rolling my eyes at the book.
Quotes that Stood Out to Me:
First thing Dawn Notices when her guardian comes to see if she's alive at the hospital:
"She looks as though she hasn't touched a brush or makeup in a week."
I think this sentence really shows how grateful Dawn is for her guardian's worry. And have you somehow not realized that the reason she hasn't touched a brush or makeup in a week is YOU?
Most repeated sentence:
"I've been through much more than most seventeen-year-olds."
Don't worry, you won't forget this fact, since Dawn insists on telling us every two seconds.
or
"Those awful fangs. They hurt going in."
Oh, my God. WHY DO THEY KEEP REMINDING US THAT GETTING BITTEN BY A VAMPIRE HURTS?! I KNOW IT DOES.
Biggest Lie:
"Dawn's good at taking care of herself."
Just saying this doesn't make it true. She doesn't do anything to show that she can take care of herself. All I've gotten from this book, is that she's useless.
Truest Statement:
"I feel like a pawn being moved across a board."
That is because she is. That's precisely what Dawn is. She never does anything influential - and I'm so glad she finally realizes that.
Strangest Description:
"He presses his thumb on either side of my spine and I arch my back like a cat getting up from a long nap in the sun."
First off: WHAT?! What kind of description even is this???? Also, I just cannot picture this. It's too weird.
Overall, this book is just terrible. I will only recommend it if you're desperate for a hate read. Other than that, it's really not worth your time. Though, if you're looking for a good eye workout, this book might be for you. All of the characters constantly contradict each other and make a big deal out of nothing. The book was so boring and the plot went no where. I did not like anything about this book, including the horrid writing. I didn't even bother to criticize the world building, since it's not worth it. My biggest problem was with the romance and Dawn. The plot was also horrible. But to be fair, most paranormal books are not good (Twilight, for example, is a brilliant role model). Honestly, though, I spent more than half the time frowning at the pages because nothing that was going on made the slightest bit of sense.
I don't think I can force myself to read the last book. At least, not right away.
Happy Reading!!
