There's nowhere left to hide.

I thought vampires were our enemies—they controlled our lives, isolated our cities, and demanded our blood—until I met Victor. With Victor taking over as the new Lord Valentine, things were supposed to get better. Instead, they're worse than ever.

Day Walkers, a new breed of vampires who can walk in the sun, are terrorizing the city. Blood supplies are low, and if Victor's vampires don't get enough, they will become infected with the Thirst—a disease that will turn them into mindless killers.

To stop it, I must journey across the desolate wasteland to the very place where the sickness began. I can only hope that the answers that await me are enough to save us all... before it's too late.

Not a bad sequel at all and at last, some things were answered but even more was revealed which, set off a whole new slew of questions! Love that this series is some how keeping my interest despite all the cliches.

Spoilers

This was worse than the first book and that's saying a lot since that was utter rubbish. I only read this because my friend forced me so she'd have someone to talk to about it. What's fucked up is that she didn't even like the damn thing but the silly cow still insisted that I read it!!
Anyway, I'll start with the good things about the book:
1. It was short.
Now that's out of the way, I can start with the bad:
1. The boring plot
2. The rubbish world building
3. The bitch heroine
4. The perverted hero
5. Most of the characters
6. The fucked up romance
7. Everything else

The heroine, Dawn, was awful. I hate that she gave up all her previous principles and beliefs just because she fell in love with a vampire (Victor). All her life she hated vampires because of how they treated humans but because she fell for Victor, she started to think that vampires were good, that they deserved blood and that humans should willingly donate theirs so that vamps would have plenty of food. Never mind that vampires have made every human life a misery, they should just forgive and forget all because Dawn's in love with Victor and she wants him to be comfortable and to never go hungry… Ugh.
Her love for Victor was nauseating — practically every thought she had revolved around him, it was pathetic how obsessed she was with him. What pissed me off most was her attitude towards her friends. Because her friends hated vampires she acted like they were being racist, narrow minded, unreasonable dick heads. The dumb bitch didn't realise that just because she fell in love and saw a different side to vampires, didn't mean they did. Why she expected them to be enlightened when they'd only ever seen the bad side of vampires, I don't know.
At the end, I rolled my eyes when Dawn found out she was the last descendant of an ancient vampire family, seriously?! She was already a Mary Sue, why make her a bigger one?!
Moving on, the hero, Victor, was a creep. He had no charm or personality, he was the same old boring dick-douche hero. I couldn't help wonder what was wrong with him that he wasn't able to find someone his own age. He's 400yrs old yet he was perving on a 17yr old. At least in other YA vampire books it can be argued that even though the vampire is centuries old that he was turned as a teenager and so is frozen in his teen years but with Victor that's not the case, he was born a vampire and he just has a long life, so even though he looks young, he's developed how he should have and he's not frozen as a teenager — he's still aging. It's disgusting that he can't find a vampire girl his own age.
Anyway, even though Victor wanted Dawn, he still didn't seem to be all that much in love with her — there was no passion or feeling between the two. All he did was avoid her, lie to her and go back on all the promises he made to her. Where was the so called epic love?
Oh and his sudden craving for her blood was cheesy and reminded me of Twilight, which is never a good thing.
Also, finding out about his past made me hate him more — he was responsible for turning thousands of humans into monsters. Naturally dumb Dawn stuck up for him even when she heard his disgusting past. And when Victor started demanding blood from humans, she was still up his arse. The dumb cow kept making excuses for him, it was stupid. They made a vile couple. Victor was a pervert and Dawn was a dumb, pathetic cow.
Most of the other characters were crap. I didn't mind Michael and Tegan though. I'm glad Michael developed feelings for Tegan and wasn't begging for Dawn's love.
I found most of the plot frustrating and I wasn't impressed with the way most of the characters were made out to be dumb just so certain events could play out and so Dawn in comparison could come across as wise and clever — she was still a dumb bitch, just because other characters were made out to be dumber, didn't make Dawn any less dumb.
The only way this series can be salvaged is if Dawn kills Victor and a war starts between vampires and humans, and all the vampires are killed. The vamps don't deserve to live since all they've done is make everyones life a misery. Obviously that won't happen though, I'm sure Dawn will turn into a vampire and she and Victor will rule together and somehow they'll manage to make humans happily donate their blood by giving some lame speech and then the vamps and humans will forget all the bad things they ever did to each other and live in harmony or some shit..Ugh.

With Day Walkers on the rise and the city in a panic, Dawn takes the night train to Los Angeles where Sin is from. Dawn is also hoping to learn about the Thirst. When vampires feed on each other it turns them into even more of a threat. After losing the war with vampires the United States was broke down into only a few fenced in cities. The only way to travel is by train. I loved getting a look and ride on the night train. Also awesome that Michael accompanied Dawn since I love him so much. Los Angeles has such a creepy vibe and twist that I didn't see coming. I'm still loving the world building of this series.

I'm Team Michael all the way. I love the sweet and protective best friend but it's obvious Dawn is into Victor so I'm trying to like him. Their relationship is just too much tell and no show. Dawn says she is gaga over him I'm just not feeling it. Maybe part of it was that Dawn and Victor are apart for the whole book except for Dawn visiting Victor's dreams. Usually a human can no enter a vampires dream so their connection is interesting. I just love that even though Dawn hurt Michael he would give up his life to protect her. If it were me...not so much! LOL

In Darkness Before Dawn there were some hints dropped about Dawn's family history. She is researching a lost royal vampire family and also ends up learning some interesting secrets about her own parents and past. It was actually kind of what I was expecting but still interesting none the less. There are so many action scenes and vampire attacks along the way that I am always kept tense and nervous. Sin is also one creeptastic evil day walker lunatic. His plan of basic vampire world domination is coming along better than I had ever expected and I am dying to know what the heck Dawn and Victor will do to stop it.

---
"I'm doing what I want to be doing. The only thing that matters, the only thing that has ever mattered to me is you, Dawn. Even if we aren't...together. I've always considered myself your guardian. When I was protecting the city; I was fantasizing about protecting you. Before you were ever a delegate. Before we even started dating. Throughout training, when they asked me to visualize the person I was meant to protect, I always thought of you."

Oh my.

Somewhere out there, in this multiverse, the FALLEN cover model is sitting by her vanity table, brushing her hair, staring at her own reflection, lamenting the day she posed for a DeviantArt submission and subsequently became THE unpaid stock model of every tragically clichéd YA Paranormal novel this decade has seen.

She could be going to her yoga classes; she could be checking out at Tesco; she could be happily minding her own business, walking along the street, when some sod grabs her by the shoulder and says: "Hey! I know you! You're the FALLEN chick! and Leopard Moon, and Darkness Before Dawn, and Frost Arch, and----"

----and she runs home, tears streaming down her face.

I hope you're happy.

"I'm human because everything about Sin repels me. His desire to destroy an entire race of creatures is too horrible to contemplate. There has to be a way that we can all live together: Vampires, Day Walkers, Humans. Not one of us is better than the other."

OMG OMG OMG OMG...Holy Vampire Babies! .
Is it wrong for me to like this book so much? I'm hovering between a 4 and 5 star... EEK!I don't know what to do!!

Okay.. I think I'll just give it a full on 5 stars..

I don't understand why so many people found this book horrible. Compared to other Vampire books, this book's possibly the most original when it comes to the story line..You can't not have vampires being drawn to human blood because isn't that what makes a vampire a vampire? DUH. So I don't get why people find this book so dull and repetitive.

Okay. Maybe the cover of the book isn't the most original. The cliche girl in the dress that looks practically identical to the Fallen Series by Lauren Kate surely doesn't give off a original vibe but hey, don't judge a book by its cover! Besides, the cover's still pretty darn alluring, don't you think?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book better than the previous one. The story line was clear and straightforward. It was fast-paced and there was an indefinite kind of richness that came with the story.

In this book, Dawn and Victor are faced with even more challenges. After Victor succeeds his father's throne, things begin to go extremely downhill. His refusal to initiate mandatory blood withdrawals from human makes it difficult for him and the vampires to receive enough blood supplies, increasing their risk of becoming infected by the Thirst. Not to mention that the possibility of Day Walkers roaming the streets of Denver is also starting to arouse fear among the humans.

"I'm so tired," I say. "I'm tired of fighting. I'm tired of everything. I just want this to be over."
"I know." He places his arm around my shoulder. "But I'm afraid it's only just begun."

Dawn was an extremely well rounded character in this book. Of course, she did have her moments where she seemed a bit naive and clouded from her own opinions. But otherwise, she was completely full on when it came to investigating the Thirst and the continuously recurring symbol in her dreams.

Oh and Victor ...DAYUMMM..
Who'd thought that a 400 year old could be so damn enticing and desirable? I'd found him pretty captivating in the first book but I actually fell head over heels for him here. What was even more strange was that he hardly came out in this book so I have no idea how I ended up becoming so obsessed with him!

And pu-leez to all those Twi-Hard fans.. don't even dare think about comparing him to Edward Cullen.

"I'm just trying to figure out this stupid dream, Victor, so it'll go away. Do you know how boring it is to dream the same thing over and over?"
"Vampires don't dream."
"But you told me you do."
His grin widens. I've always loved his smiles. They don't appear often, but when they do, they're incredible.
"All I dream about is you. Over and over. And it's not boring at all."

Omg.. I think I just died....

The romance in this book was sweet and genuine, not to mention that I couldn't stop those little involuntary flutters in my stomach. Besides, what could be even sweeter than forbidden love? Their relationship developed profoundly in this book, despite Victor's frequent absence throughout the story.

Victor looks at me with those sharp eyes, a haunting anger in them. Not at me, but at himself. I remember that look from long ago. Before I loved him... before we meant so much to each other, I saw that look.
"What are you so afraid of, Victor?"
"I'm afraid what I'll do to you. We can't be together, Dawn. Not professionally. Not... romantically."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because it's difficult to let go."

And those completely life-changing secrets of his... Now, that was entirely a different story. And the handful of shocking revelations towards the end? Now that, also, I hadn't seen coming.

Ugh! Sin and that twisted-little-head of his! He disgusted me even more here. That sick bastard. I'm usually not masochistic but I seriously hope he dies a very, very, very painful death in the next book. SICK MINDED LEECH SUCKER.

One thing however that sorta put me off was the page error in the paperback version. The pages were jumbled up so badly from pages 188 to 217 that it got a bit difficult trying to read the pages in corresponding order. At first, I'd thought that only the edition that I had had a printing error, only to realize that many other people had the identical problem, too. Fortunately, the page numbering helped tremendously when trying to find the right pages which was definitely quite a relief.

EEK.. The ending wasn't exactly a cliff hanger but I'm desperate to find out what going to happen next! And the next book isn't even coming out for like 2 months!!!

OH.. FOR THE LOVE OF VICTOR'S FUTURE VAMPIRE BABIES.. I'M FRANTIC.. OH I'M BLOODY FRANTIC!!! *no pun intended*

MUST.GET.MY.HANDS.ON.AFTER.DAYBREAK.

"A vampire might fall in love with a human. If he were the last of the family"-he cradles my cheek, strokes his thumb over my lower lip- "he would doom his clan to extinction. Humans and vampires can't produce offspring."
"What if he turned her?" It's a stupid question. Lessers can't breed.
"Maybe her loved her too much to turn her into what she never wanted to be."

"Please don't go," I say.
"I can't stay."
"Just hold me."
I don't think I've ever seen him look so sad, so defeated. I wasn't even certain vampires could hold such strong emotions.
"I can't."
...He opens the balcony door.
"How can you walk away?" I ask.
"Because I love you."
His words merely waft in on the breeze that stirs the curtains, because he is already gone.

Blood Kissed Sky is the second book in the Darkness Before Dawn series and it definitely was a fantastic sequel. I was disappointed to realise that Victor was going to be absent for a lot of this book, while Dawn goes to Los Angeles. And while I did really miss him, we got to see glimpses of him through dreams, and there was a lot going on with Dawn in LA to keep me glued to the pages.

Dawn heads to LA, a city that is completely free of vampires, to find out how they are dealing with the Thirst. Also, that's where Sin said he came from, and while he may have been lying, Dawn hopes he wasn't and that she can also find out more about him and his day walkers. What she discovers in LA is truly terrifying.

The attack on the teenagers at the Blood Drive in Darkness Before Dawn, is now being dubbed "Hell Night" and the terrible events of that night have taken their toll and I felt we see changes in the characters due to this. Dawn is tougher, and Michael and Tegan, realising the full extent of the danger now, appealed to me much more when they weren't constantly trying to talk Dawn into doing stupid, dangerous things. And Victor, in his role as the Lord of the Denver Vampires, is discovering that the position is more difficult than he previously thought, and it seems he may be harder on the humans than Dawn thought he was going to be.

Questions I'd been pondering in the last book were answered here, and the twist at the end, wasn't completely unexpected. I'm really looking forward to After Daybreak where I think things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. I'm expecting a lot of action and anticipation and hopefully, lots of Victor too. With a release date for June, we don't have too long to wait. Thankfully, this hasn't been a long drawn out series.

Okay I don't get the hate for this book, or for its predecesor.

I read the first one and thought it was a super fresh approach to a topic that has been beaten to death. The style of writing is poignant with dark undertones that help the bleakness of the setting really come across, and I had no idea that two people worked together to write these. Each scene is described well, the characters act realistically, and the romance between Victor and Dawn is slow building and believable, unlike some other vampire trilogy we all know....

Blood-Kissed Sky picked up right where The Darkness Before Dawn left off. So much so that I had to dig through my Kindle for the 1st novel and read its last two chapters again to remind myself of who was what. Then I jumped right into the second story and didn't look back.

In fact, the only time I paused to put it down was to double and quadruple check that a mother and son team had written this together. Because honestly, the romance scenes were described *juuuust* enough for me to be uncomfortable writing that in tandem with a family member, let alone a parental unit.

Otherwise, I didn't put this book down until I finished it AND the sneak peak into the 3rd novel.

Sorry guys, but I LIKE this trilogy. I like Dawn. I like Victor. I like Dawn's friends. And I like the premise, setting, twists, and background these characters are in.

I can't wait for the final novel and am kinda bitter I have to wait until June.

I picked up this series by chance at one of the libraries I work at and I am so glad I took the risk. It's very rare for me to enjoy a second book in a series rather than the first, but boy did J. A. London do a great job with this one.

After overthrowing the former vampire ruler Valentine and replacing him with his son, Dawn Montgomery, delegate of the city of Denver to the Vampires, finds herself removed from her title and sent to investigate a new breed of vampire in LA, the Daywalkers. While the first book was mostly plot set up and world building, this next installment was all about unraveling the mysteries of the Vampires and how to find a cure for something afflicting them called the Thirst.

I cannot rave enough about how good this book was, I was riveted from the beginning all the way to the end. There were also many plot twists and turns involving Dawn's family that really changed the tone of the book.

Readers, I encourage you to pick up Darkness Before Dawn and to read this series, it will not disappoint.

I was afraid I would fall into a reading slump if I would start this book. Now I just feel like an idiot for thinking that.

This book was/is insane!! It gripped me right from the start.
The first 250 or so pages were fast paced and awesome, the last part was just crazy.
We started to have kind of a new moon/iron daughter situation, but at the same time it was very different. I should have seen some of the plot twists coming, but I didn’t. Other plot twists I did see coming, but was very surprised about the details.

I’m pretty sure I’m just rambling right now, so maybe I’ll write a new review after I finish After Daybreak.

One of my character flaws is the inability to leave a series unfinished. I never should've started this book, considering how much I hated the first one, but I did so anyway.

This book's just one disaster onto the next. Nothing that happened made any sense, and everything was just a wreck.

Let's begin with the plot. This whole story, as I mentioned in my review of the first book, is incredibly dumb. So, skimming over that fact, let's talk about what's left of the plot, which, to be honest, isn't much. The last book ended with Dawn, the main character, getting her blood sucked by Victor, the weird, creepy vampire love interest. I thought she was dead, and was overjoyed at the idea, but apparently she somehow managed to survive. Which was disappointing. Anyways, everyone has suddenly figured out that there are these different types of vampires called 'day walkers,' who can walk in the sun, which is just so convenient for the plot. Also, apparently Day Walkers somehow manage to become normal vampires when they die, so their bodies can burn in the sun. So there's that. This new development had zero impact on the plot, other than saving Dawn from having to go give her dead brother and actual burial (he was a Day Walker, but when he died, his body turned to ash). It's also just incredibly stupid.

Also, why are there just a bunch of idiotic teens running around trying to stop a crazy vampire? Where are all the adults? I was so confused, since these teens need serious assistance. Anyway, I'm all for a bunch of teens saving the world, but usually there are at least a few adult side characters who offer guidance. This made the whole thing even more unrealistic, since this story doesn't even take place in a fantasy world.

This leads us to the romance. Oh, my god. This was the downfall of the entire book. Victor is such a creep, I swear. He's also incredibly contradicting. For example, he'll tell Dawn that they can't be together because he's a vampire, but then kisses her two seconds later anyways. Also, Dawn is so dumb and weak when it comes to Victor. She only sees what she wants to see, and even when he's being a complete jerk and physcopath, she still takes his side, or chooses so ignore it all together. Which is just wonderful. Also, the romance trope here is kind of a weird twist of enemies to lovers. HOW DO YOU MESS UP THE BEST ROMANCE TROPE SO HORRIBLY?? This romance had me rolling my eyes every two seconds, and wanting to go beat some sense into the both of them.

I don't think I liked a single character in this book. Teagan was stupid and couldn't do anything on her own. Michael would not stop pining after Dawn, which was so pathetic. Michael was actually okay for the half of the book, until he did the most stupidest thing that anyone ever did in this book, which is pretty impressive. When someone ACCIDENTALLY bumps into Dawn because he was looking at his phone, Michael (to the rescue) holds him in a chokehold, slams him against the wall, and grabs the phone out of his hand and tosses it into the street where a car runs over it. ALL OF THIS OVERREACTION FOR ACCIDENTALLY BUMPING INTO SOMEONE. If only I could break someone's phone every time someone bumped into me. And the most absurd part of it all, was that no one seemed to think this was out of the ordinary. The man - whose phone got wrecked and who got thrown against a wall - doesn't seem to mind, and just walks away. Dawn is all, "Oh, Michael. You're my hero!" It's so strange, and I can't think of anyone doing this in real life. Well, I guess either way, he's still better than Victor, who is, as said before, an incredibly contradicting, self absorbed, creep.

Moving on, the plot twists in this book were very easy to predict. The whole thing where we realize that Dawn is actually a descendant of a vampire family, was the most easy thing to guess. There were literally were no other plot twists besides that, and the whole story was very boring.

I have saved a whole paragraph for the most annoying thing in this book: Dawn herself. She's so incapable, and can't do anything on her own. Half the time, she's moping around because things aren't going her way, and the other half, she's thinking about Victor NON-STOP. She expects all her friends to start liking and being friends with vampires, even though she herself hated all vampires until Victor came along. She doesn't take a step back and try to imagine how her friends must be feeling, and instead just goes along and judges them for being afraid or skeptical. I hate her so, so much. As if that isn't bad enough, we will never forget the fact that Dawn has had a hard life, because SHE KEEPS BRINGING IT UP EVERY PAGE. Like, I get it. You've gotten over some hard challenges in your life, but please stop reminding me about it every second!

And now, I want to take the time to judge the names in this book. Dawn - literally the stupidest name for a heroine, and purely there so the author can make puns with her name for the titles. And guess what the villain's name is? Sin. Yeah, that's right. Because he's a SIN. Wow, how original. And weirdly, Sin is the only character I actually didn't mind.

Also, the writing style in this book was horrific. Please. I couldn't stand the random exclamations. I have never seen an exclamation mark appear so often in a book.

Really, the only thing I gained from this book was getting the chance to exercise my eyeballs, purely because I couldn't stop rolling my eyes at the book.

Quotes that Stood Out to Me:

First thing Dawn Notices when her guardian comes to see if she's alive at the hospital:

"She looks as though she hasn't touched a brush or makeup in a week."

I think this sentence really shows how grateful Dawn is for her guardian's worry. And have you somehow not realized that the reason she hasn't touched a brush or makeup in a week is YOU?

Most repeated sentence:

"I've been through much more than most seventeen-year-olds."

Don't worry, you won't forget this fact, since Dawn insists on telling us every two seconds.

or

"Those awful fangs. They hurt going in."

Oh, my God. WHY DO THEY KEEP REMINDING US THAT GETTING BITTEN BY A VAMPIRE HURTS?! I KNOW IT DOES.

Biggest Lie:

"Dawn's good at taking care of herself."

Just saying this doesn't make it true. She doesn't do anything to show that she can take care of herself. All I've gotten from this book, is that she's useless.

Truest Statement:

"I feel like a pawn being moved across a board."

That is because she is. That's precisely what Dawn is. She never does anything influential - and I'm so glad she finally realizes that.

Strangest Description:

"He presses his thumb on either side of my spine and I arch my back like a cat getting up from a long nap in the sun."

First off: WHAT?! What kind of description even is this???? Also, I just cannot picture this. It's too weird.

Overall, this book is just terrible. I will only recommend it if you're desperate for a hate read. Other than that, it's really not worth your time. Though, if you're looking for a good eye workout, this book might be for you. All of the characters constantly contradict each other and make a big deal out of nothing. The book was so boring and the plot went no where. I did not like anything about this book, including the horrid writing. I didn't even bother to criticize the world building, since it's not worth it. My biggest problem was with the romance and Dawn. The plot was also horrible. But to be fair, most paranormal books are not good (Twilight, for example, is a brilliant role model). Honestly, though, I spent more than half the time frowning at the pages because nothing that was going on made the slightest bit of sense.

I don't think I can force myself to read the last book. At least, not right away.

Happy Reading!!

Huzzah! Finally some plot twists I didn’t see coming! I don’t know if my normally high plot line precognitive senses are slipping, but I did NOT anticipate LA being a city full of Sin’s day walking vampires. I also didn’t anticipate Dawn being a somewhat watered down dhampir (Renesme! 😆), and that Sin is her many times removed full-blooded vampire relative. I’m not entirely sure where I thought the plot line was heading with the introduction of this mysteriously vanished 15th original vampire family. I thought maybe they were in hiding and would suddenly re-emerge to save the day, or something. In any event, I enjoyed this second book more than I did the first. The first book was on the low side of 3 stars, barely making it past the 2 star mark. This book is at the higher end of 3 stars, almost making it to 4.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to DNF this book. It's a shame because I was really interested in it, BUT at page 187, the book veers off and I don't mean plot wise. Whoever assembled the book (or more likely, whoever was in charge of the machine that assembled the book) was drunk/high/fell asleep, because the pages stop being in order. I checked out the next 15 pages or so and it wasn't fixed, so I closed the book and chalked it up to $10 wasted, as I no longer have the receipt and also bought the book on vacation at a store that doesn't exist in my actual state of residence.

This was another good book to the trilogy. Dawn is sent to California in hopes to find out more about the thirst and the daybreakers. Of course it's an adventure getting there and when she does make it you know that Sin shows up. Yet again he is up to no good. The best part of this book was the ending. For once it wasn't because the book sucked and I was ready for it to end. However, it was because of all that we found out about Dawn and her family. I can honestly tell you that I never saw that coming. I'm definitely looking forward to reading how they are ending this trilogy.

Plot twist!

Although it took a while for the book to actually get going, once it did, I couldn't stop reading. I never saw the end coming. It was the ultimate plot twist. Dawn and Victor's love story was complicated enough to make it seem more realistic, and I can't wait to read the next book to see how it turns out.

So fun, this is like one of those thrill ride summer movies, (well, kinda) it has twists and turns and some horror thrown in with a bit of romance-- and an easy read- so, yeah, a Summer movie..? Very enjoyable and the hints and foreshadowing is paying off, but just how will it end?
MWAH-hahahahahahaha! Can't Wait!

The farthest my reaction could achieve was a furrow between my brows. Whaaaat?

It didn't feel exciting. Sure, there was a bit of a hype where there was action, but it was only a slight stir! Oh dear.

Honestly, I really can't feel energy. Oh, and it was kind of predictable, which is ssssomehow...not challenging to my train of thoughts. It wasn't. Enough. And I really can't feel the character's feelings! Or they're thoughts! *screams at the top of my lungs* I DON'T FEEL ANYTHIIIIING.

I know I lack human empathy, but not on book characters! (they're more real, you know)

I'm so sorry!

But! There's one thing I haven't encountered before.

Day Walkers. Wow, that's some new vampire race! Originality? Check! (that's what I think, don't judge me)

but then again, I go: oh snap, night walkers! Doesn't that sound game-of-thrones-ish?

*disappears into mist*

(this might be my only long review for the series. Might. Nevertheless, I need a closure to the story, so I'm going to read the last book in the series. I don't like being kept hanging. Ugh.)

so basically, the rating goes like this:

2 stars for the book, 1 star for originality.

Like, Darkness Before Dawn before it, Blood-Kissed Sky was the good with the bad. Overall, it felt like a stronger book than DBD, in large part for the lack of romantic wibbling, but it also felt much shorter and in many ways was less satisfying. Despite having a really nice twist (well, one of them. The main twist was eye-rollingly predictable and not that exciting), BKS feels like half a book.

On the plus side, JA London developed the three things I was most intrigued by in DBD -- Ian Hightower, the Night Train and Los Angeles. My problem with all three is that BKS didn't spend enough time letting us take in/enjoy them -- BKS had a LOT of telling and forward action, not a lot of showing/time to enjoy the world build.

One problem I had, which is a personal feeling that others may not share, is that BKS missed a great opportunity to expand its world and develop Dawn as a character. She's sent on a mission to Los Angeles to investigate the Thirst and thrown into the company of Ian Hightower, one of the series' most intriguing characters. But instead of developing new characters, showing us more about the world by Dawn's interaction with people and places outside of Denver, we get the easy story: Michael and Tegan go with Dawn and Richard and Faith show up. I would have been fine with Richard and Faith (well, more Richard, less Faith -- Faith is a massive Buffy knock-off/Vampire Sue), but I groaned out loud, twice, when they revealed that Michael was Dawn's guard and Tegan snuck abroad the train. Since neither character is much to write home about (and the Michael/Dawn "romantic tension," like in DBD, is non-existent), BKS becomes driven by inert, uninteresting characters.

Dawn is still a nebulous character -- she's a bit ballsier in BKS, but still has no personality beyond "is forward sometimes." Victor is basically non-existent in this book, which didn't bother me that much (see: less romantic wibbling), but contributed to BKS feeling like a bridge book. I mourn the missed opportunity to have Dawn strike out on her own, have to make new allegiances and introduce some mundane dramatic tension. London is GREAT at sudden and big dramatic tension -- the "mini" twist that happens in L.A. is wonderful -- but there's no real sense of rising action/continual suspense throughout the rest of the book. It's inconsistent.

I guessed the "big" twist about fifty pages in, maybe less. Basically

Speaking of things that are under-developed... the whole

Regardless, I am going to read the third book. The world build remains incredibly interesting, even if the characters, romance and story development are less than stellar.

After the deadly ending of Darkness Before Dawn we see Dawn in hospital, the citizens of Denver are panicking and not donating blood and Sin is gone for the time been. When Dawn is released she realises the extent of damage the events at the Teen Initiative Party had. Its now being called Hell Night. A lot of kids lost their lives and more are missing. People are blaming Dawn and have no faith in her anymore.

Very few in Denver are donating blood and Dawn knows that if they don't The Thirst will set in. While the Day Walkers are a threat Dawn and Clive think The Thirst is more of a threat and Clive decides to send Dawn to LA to figure how they manage The Thirst and why they are Vampire free. She is also trying to find out any information on Sin because he said he came from there.

She cant tell anyone she is going but she tells Teagan anyway. She is assigned a Night Watchman to be her bodyguard and Ian Hightower, the famous Vampire Hunter, will also be on board the Night Train. On the train she comes face to face with Teagan, who decides to stow away on board to help Dawn. She also faces the fact that her bodyguard is no other than Michael.

She hates the idea of her friends being in danger but has no other choice but to go forward. Along with Ian, the three friends go to LA to get answers but while there they find way more than they bargained for!!

Whoa, this book was so good. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. From the reviews its the kinda book you either love or hate. Im glad to say I loved it!!

Dawn is as awesome as always. She is brave to a fault and always looks out for her friends. She is upset with the idea of her friends being in danger and tells Michael to protect Teagan over her. I really like her strength and determination.

Teagan is so messed up after the events of Hell Night. She isn't sleeping and when she does she has nightmares. She is so jumpy but still goes with Dawn to help her and to try to kill Sin. She seems to have grown more as a character since the last book.

Michael was much better in this book as well. He isn't so egotistical. He is a Night Watchman now and knows the protecting people and protecting Dawn is the most important thing. He knows about The Thirst first hand and knows how this mission is very important.

We don't see too much of Victor in this but what we do see left me guessing what way he will be in book 3. The little bit of blood he gets he has to ration carefully among his vamps but he knows he doesn't have enough to satisfy them. If they don't get more blood he knows the vamps will either attack the people or each other.

Sin on the other hand is one of the creepiest, baddest, craziest vampire baddies I've read in a long time. He is totally cuckoo. I cant wait to see what happens next with him. He is one sick twisted dude!!

Overall I loved Blood Kissed Sky, even though Id figured out the twist it didn't detract from the story. With plenty of action, adventure, suspense and vampires its well worth the read. I'm so glad I have book 3 to jump into straight away because I cant wait to see what happens.

Good book, but paled in comparison to the first.

I waited forever for this book, because the hold list was a mile long! But when I finally got it, I was totally psyched... until I started reading. So I still gave it three stars, because I loved the first one, and this one didn't totally suck (Pun! See what I did there?). But it wasn't the mind-blowing awesomeness of the first, not even close.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you what happened the first half of the book. There's a major lack of romance, and I kind of find myself hating the male lead. Victor loves her, can't live without her, yeah, right. He used her to take over the throne, and then totally dumped her. Making me love the characters? Not so much. That, and for some reason I found Dawn exceedingly annoying in this book, but I can't tell you why. She just always seemed to be complaining about something or another, and always talked about how grown up she was, I wanted to tell her to put a sock in it and suck it up. Also, there was a serious lack of dynamic between the characters. Michael was awesome (per usual), but her best friend (who I can't even remember the name of) is also really annoying! Girls always think they should just run head on into everything, and they always screw things up!

That's one issue I have with the whole pro-feminist theme books have been taking ever since The Hunger Games. I think we all get that girls can be badasses and do their own thing, but sometimes, that's just not true. If a male lead is stronger, more skilled, has more powers, or is smarter than you, you'd just get in his way. In book these days it's always, "I don't want to be left behind." and, "I can't just sit here while you risk your life!". But in reality, they're just going to wimp out and get in the way, usually causing harm to the guy because he feels an inate need to protect the little idiot.

I'm all for pro-feminism, but come on ladies. Get your heads together. You can charge into the battle when you have rock hard muscles and have been training for years.

But jumping off this tirade train, I'll say Blood-Kissed Sky was missing that major WOW factor that I was looking for. Hopefully J. A. London can pull the story together with the third book. I know that often the second book in a Young Adult book isn't that good because it's more of a ladder up onto the third floor and to the amazing finish of the story. So I'll be reading the third book when I get around to it, and I'm definitely hoping that this series will come together, because I really fell in love with the first book.

Yours Truly,

Thank you to HarperCollins for sending me a copy of Blood-Kissed Sky through Goodreads First Reads. In no way did this affect my opinion of the book.

*Contains spoilers for Darkness Before Dawn*

"She is awakening," the vampire, as ancient as the rocks that surrounded him, announced.
HAHAHAHAHA! The above is the first line of the prologue of Blood-Kissed Sky, and seriously? That line was so ridiculously cliched that I literally burst out laughing. On continuation of reading the prologue, it didn't get much better. Here's the last line of the prologue:
Soon. So very, very soon.
Really? That line hasn't been used before *cough cough*. Thankfully, the use of cliches eased up slightly in the body of the novel, although there were times when I couldn't help but shake my head at lines such as:
"I pride myself on my control. For me, human blood is nourishment, a necessary evil, and nothing more. It's always been like that, until you came along. You bring out the monster in me, Dawn."
Edward flashbacks? You know, Twilight? Anyone?

I really enjoyed Darkness Before Dawn, but I found that Blood-Kissed Sky wasn't quite up to the same standard. The plot was mostly predictable (e.g. I predicted Sin's true identity and Dawn's identity) except that I didn't expect the massive twist about Los Angeles at all- which I suppose is a job well done. So look forward to that one!

A major problem I had with the novel was Dawn's narrative voice. It was almost as if Dawn had two personalities as she was fluctuating continually from sounding like a perfectly normal teenager to sounding like some posh lady from the 18th century. I found that the discrepancy between the two was at times confusing and at times downright annoying (usually the 18th century lady was combined with the ridiculously cliched lines).

Another less significant problem was the romance. The romance was sort of a love triangle (much like it was in Darkness Before Dawn) but I honestly found it a bit superficial- I didn't really see Dawn and Victor (or Dawn and Michael, for that matter) connect. Still, overall, the novel wasn't bad- the pacing, writing and characters were all relatively good, making the novel worth a read. To conclude:
"How can you walk away?" I ask.
"Because I love you."

I knew I was an instant fan after reading Darkness Before Dawn, but I’m even more in love with the series after reading Blood-Kissed Sky. From the very first page I was engrossed and couldn’t put this one down until the end.

Blood-Kissed Sky starts off right after Darkness Before Dawn and ever since what happened right at the end of the last book, Dawn is noticing some changes going on inside her. The secret of her past and who she really is comes out in a big way and even though I kind of suspected it, I liked how it all unfolded and it was a great twist to the plot. There’s also a lot going on within the city since people are refusing to give blood, “the Thirst” is becoming more of a threat, and everyone is realizing there are a lot more Day Walkers than anticipated. Eventually Dawn must travel to L.A. to learn more about the Day Walkers and Sin, because that’s where he supposedly came from, and things become even more crazy. I loved it!

Victor and Dawn’s relationship is very complicated, but they can’t resist the pull they have towards each other. I really loved their playful banter and even though there weren’t enough swoony moments, I can never get enough of them, it was still a decent amount. Victor isn’t as present in person, but there’s a strong connection between him and Dawn which brings them together in ways they never expected. You’ll also see how intertwined their families really are. And even though Victor is quite swoon-worthy, you’ll slowly begin to question him and his motives. I’m interested in seeing where exactly London takes this relationship to.

I liked seeing more of the secondary characters like Michael, Tegen, Richard, and Faith. They each add a bit of flair to a dismal setting and they all care for Dawn in some way or other. We also get to meet some new characters on her journey to L.A. they definitely run into some exciting problems. Dawn is a pretty great lead character too and she grows and learns a lot in this book. There was definitely enough action, romance, and suspense to keep you glued to the book. It’s got everything!

Blood-Kissed Sky is an amazing and captivating sequel to an outstanding series. Oh, June can’t get here fast enough. I’m dying to get my hands on After Daybreak to see how it all ends.

FIRST....THIS COVER IS GORGEOUS!!! What a breathtakingly beautiful cover!!! I am one of those people that will read a book just for the cover and WOW...This would have been a first choice!!!

Ok I LOVED Darkness Before Dawn. I love vampires stories and this one was great. It was a refreshing take on young adult vampire stories. That being said...I DIVED into Blood-Kissed Sky and it did not disappoint. Again we find ourselves immersed into the love story of Victor and Dawn and their impossible true love story.

I absolutely adore Dawn. She is strong-willed, focused, and will give her life for the ones she loves. She does not hesitate to fight and survive against all odds. She and Victor are so wonderful together. I could not wait to learn what happened next with them.
Victor is now Lord Valentine and has to make certain sacrifices in order to gain respect. He and Dawn break my heart at every turn of the page. They face so many obstacles and yet they still know they belong together. He a vampire and she a human and yet their connection is so unbelievably strong and they are meant for each other.

I also love that we interact more with Michael and Tegan and other new characters in this book. Its not just focused on Dawn and Victor. The plot is thickening and questions are arising throughout the entire book. There are so many twists and turns during this journey. I find myself liking Richard and Faith more and more. (They are part of Victor's Vampire family)

Sin....hmmm..what should I say about him? He is a TRUE villain and I find myself clenching my teeth when his name is brought up. He is what we think of when we think of villain vampire. Cruel, blood-thirsty, full of hate, and just disgusting. Ugh....

The last couple of chapters of this book are intense..There are no other words except intense. I could not put the book down and when I finished the last page I kept turning hoping there was more. I cannot say just how bad I cant wait to read the conclusion. WOW. What a cliffhanger?? REALLY!!!!!!!!

This is the sequel to "Darkness Before Dawn", a nice beginning to a trilogy that mixes vampires and a post-apocalyptic world of sorts. In this second installment to the trilogy, Dawn Montgomery has to face the aftermath of the Day Walkers' reveal and what it means for humans of Denver. However, the day Walkers led by Sin are not the only issue she has to face. There is also the Thirst, which affects vampires who drink vampire blood and turn into crazed monsters. In order to learn more about the Thirst, Dawn takes the Night Train to Los Angeles, a city that has conquered the Thirst.

Because this is the second book and things get worse before they get better, it's quite predictable that other problems will arise and give the appearance that the whole effort is hopeless. It does not mean that this is a bad book. It just falls in line with every second book in a trilogy. But I digress. Dawn was a bit annoying with her self-sacrificing personality and with her constantly trying to blame herself for others' actions. But still, she can be strong and determined, which kind of makes up for her flaws. Tegan is a good friend, but does not seem to have any self-preservation instinct.

The fact that the characters can be a bit annoying does not make this book a bad read. I am much intrigued by the world building, and by what will happen in the next book, given the end of this one (not exactly a cliffhanger, but still, all those revelations right at the end...). And I want to know what Victor will do with all the new information (he was sorely missed throughout the book, those glimpses we got weren't nearly enough!). And I also want to know if the others (Tegan, Richard, Faith and Ian) made it in the end of the book, I hope they did as I want to see Faith finally admitting her feelings for Richard.

Surprise!
Wow, that was a huge revelation there. I thought this series would actually decline in quality because of the similarities these cover shares with Fallen but I was happily proven wrong.

Blood Kissed Sky is about Dawn Montgomery trying to find a cure for the Thirst - vampires drinking vampire blood- while balancing her relationship with Victor. I really took pleasure in the description of the trip to Los Angeles because it was something the humans never got to experience. The luxurious food, clothing, and overally atmosphere was interesting to read from the perspective of Dawn who never left shithole Denver. I also admired J.A. London creating palpable tension within each chapter. Almost all chapters ended with a cliffhanger.

On the otherhand, I felt Dawn was too dependent on other people. She did not have one significant event occur without someone else backing her up. For example, meeting the mayor of LA, sleeping (I mean how many people do you honestly need?), and the confrontation with Sin in the cave.

Overall, the story was climatic and raised plenty of questions that I hope will be answered in the last book.
