Devil's Breath

Rate this book
Before a devastating orbital strike crippled its government and set the stage for invasion, the United States military relied on a top-secret unit of special operatives known only by their

The Ghosts.

But when their leader and commanding officer, Captain Gabriel Rorke, is captured deep in South America at the hands of the Federation, it’s his place atop the highly-trained, off-books unit that makes him the highest-priority enemy combatant in American history.

Exclusively published on Kindle and Kindle devices, “Devil’s Breath” buries readers underground with Rorke as he struggles to survive years of captivity, a victim of not only chemical, psychological, and physical torture methods perfected by the CIA but ancient Amazonian methods of coercion, fused by Federation forces with one goal in mind…

Reprogram America’s greatest weapon into its greatest threat.

I adore Rorke and this installment of the franchise. I wish it was explored more, which is why I scoured the earth for a copy of this. I think this book did a really good job at showing Rorke's strength and self-preservation—we read it from the beginning up to the very end.

To the very end? Yeah, to the very end.

I was maybe less than ten pages left and I still felt as though Rorke could still keep going on, like he could manage for a couple more chapters. But then it ended, just like that. It felt a bit abrupt, like a whole 180, and it was a real brow-raising moment for me. I swear he had more snark in him, but then he didn't.

Even having played the game (only once, maybe that's the problem?), it still feels as though I've seen the beginning and the end but there's a huge chunk missing in-between and there's nothing else for me to consume to fill that gap. I hopped onto this book hoping to quench a thirst except it had left me parched.

Like Rorke said.

I wish there was more. I’m really fascinated by what they were doing with Ghosts, only to have it abandoned. This look into Rorke’s psyche and how he came to be the antagonist is pretty good, but it really is just a lot of torture (pretty well written torture though.) I wish his turning was a bit more gradual, and it elaborated more on his friendship with Elias, so that when he inevitably turns it cuts deeper.

Overall glad this exists and glad I got my hands on it too.
