The One Week Budget is for anyone that wants to manage their day-to-day money without the day-to-day hassle. Does this sound like you? What are you waiting for? Read the book already! The Budgetnista Tiffany Aliche
Tiffany the Budgetnista Aliche is America's favorite personal finance educator! She is also author of New York Times bestselling book, Get Good with Money.
I bought this book YEARS ago when it first came out, because I wanted to support Tiffany and her endeavors (she and I went to middle and high school together). At the time I had a (possibly pathologically) robust budgeting system in place, but I'm a supportive friend, and I certainly don't know everything there is to know about budgeting.
However, it took me about 100 years to get around to reading this book (I read a lot, and this book just never made it to the top of the pile). Then I turned 39 and panicked that I'll NEVER get to retire (I'm being a bit dramatic--my 401(k) says I'll be able to retire when I'm 65, but that's about 20 years later than I'd like!!). [Sidebar--I read somewhere that people tend to accomplish big goals in the year before starting a new decade, which explains why I finally got around to dusting off this book.]
In the intervening 100 years between when I bought and read the book, I lost track of my budgeting system, so this was a great reminder. Tiffany's system is straightforward, she provides a lot of examples (many that are personal), and also has sample spreadsheets for readers to use.
Two items of caution: 1) the book is designed to give you a handful of tasks every day for 7 days to set up your new budget system. You don't have to do this in 7 days, but I love that the week model creates urgency (you don't want to lose momentum!). BUT if you don't have 7 days in a row right now, DO NOT let that be an excuse to put off starting. Do what you can! 2) Also remember, you can build a budget in a week, but it will likely take a bit longer to get used to keeping track of your spending, esp. cutting back on things and/or switching them out for cheaper alternatives (i.e. you can save money by making coffee at home, but somehow it always tastes so much better when someone else--like a barista--makes it for you!).
I recommend this book for people who are new to the concept of budgeting, parents who have kids who are in the process of moving out, and anyone who feels a lack of control over their finances.
It's a great budget workbook. It could have used more professional layout/editing. I would have liked a bit more on investing, but that changes a lot, so it's beter to go to her site for that.
Take what you can from this book and ignore the rest. It's easy to talk about finances when you have a family who has always talked about it together, or if you have the option to "move home" when things get tough and you need to save. Not everyone has this luxury, and not everyone had financially responsible parents growing up. Changing your relationship with money as an adult is very difficult, as I can attest to. I did use a few of the worksheet templates and plan to keep using them, but I won't hold this book as the Gold Standard in financial planning. Also, who edited this thing??
Easy to read and easy to follow budget and instructions. Let's put it to the test. If you have never created a budget this is the perfect guide to get you started. Once you've got the basics I recommend using excel to make it easy to make changes quickly. You will not regret it. Get your teenagers to read this it will set them up for life.
Financial Independence and Empowerment for Dummies
Easy read, concise information, applicable anecdotes and user-friendly layout with summaries at the end of each step and blank templates. This is a book to read when you want to understand things from scratch no matter where you are in life. I found it extremely helpful! Thank you dear Budgetnista!
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to manage thier finances. I purchased this product, to help me now that I am self-employed. if i could give more than five stars I would.
Very practical budgeting system. But I agree with some of the other reviewers...the book is poorly edited and the layout could be better. The author comes off a bit pretentious at times; but if you look past these things, one can learn something from the practical principles.
This book is so helpful for young adults that are just starting their financial planning. I also recommend this book to people that have lost their way in their financial journey. Before reading this book, I felt stuck and embarrass about my finances because I had accumulated some debt that I had ignore over the years due to not having enough money to pay if off. However, after reading this book, I was able to pay my debt in full. I also contact my bank and got guidance for building my credit back up. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Excellent Tips on Ways to Save your hard earned money:)
I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling financially. Living paycheck to paycheck is no fun. Being in debt is no fun. There are ways you can easily pay down your debt by making small sacrifices that in the end will reap Big rewards. It's definitely worth it to be able to gain Financial Freedom! Great read. Easy to follow. Thank you for writing this book for all of us ( Mostly the Middle Class).
If you are tired of living paycheck to paycheck or you need to start budgeting, or need to get out of debt then this is the book for you.
She breaks everything down for the reader to understand. She helps you to see where every penny is going. I had a budget before I read this book but after reading this I will redraft it so that is more helpful for me.
This book is a great investment for people of all income levels. Get read it and try it. I know I am.
I found the information to be very helpful and easy to follow. The author gives me a new perspective on how to manage money that I can start implementing in my own life. It's a real disadvantage that we don't learn these things in school. But, I'm glad there are people like Tiffany Aliche that shows me it's never too late to learn how to manage my money.
This book was an easy and fun read. I read it in one sitting. There was an honesty in the manner in which the information was conveyed to the reader. One could feel the desire for the success of the reader. It demands accountability in a caring way. If you've ever heard the authors' voice you could hear her reading to you. Loved it...
Although much of the information mentioned in the book is not relevant to india, the general concepts about budgeting is very informative and useful. It’s a must read for anyone who has just started their careers and want to learn about saving habits. I wish I had read this book when I started my career 20 years back.
It's alright, but it is definitely made for a younger crowd. I love that she is dedicated to teaching young people how to save, so I definitely commend her for that.
Started reading the book with lot of interest but it fizzled out after few initial pages. The approach taken here is very practical which is good but it feels more like a series of amateur blog posts than a book.
Definitely will utilize some of these techniques to improve my budget. I like the grids and ideas of where to find the money you don't know that you have. I also.like the debt reduction grid. I was not a fan of the examples that made the book so wordy.
I mean, is alright... If you don't have a single clue on how to make a budget, organize, account and register your own spending, it's great. But if you do, there's nothing much for you here. It's a great read, it's HEAVILY US based. If you wanna live in USA, it's a must read: it'll explain the insanity of America's credit cards operation, the heavy focus on CASH and a lot other things that's necessary to understand before living in the USA (mostly apply to Canada too). I was really expecting a new way to build my own accountability, budget, etc. I found it. But not the "develop your own way to budget" that's in the title. Either way, good read.
I think the formatting of the book was a bit strange, but the advice and instructions were all clearly stated and unfortunately very easy to follow. I don't like being confronted with the scandalous amount of money I spend on non-essentials or by how much I've been sheltered from financial responsibility by having a family entirely willing to baby me and consistently bail me out. I haven't made any majorly unwise financial decisions, but after years of spending more than I saved, the budgetnista's advice has been very helpful and encouraging for me.
I like how easily accessible most of the steps in this book are. Although I am on the UK I was able to easily implement steps 1-8. Thank you budgetnista for helping me along on my financial journey and it is amazing the confidence you feel from knowing where and on what you are spending and gradually able to increase your savings
This book is full of great information. However, some paragraphs are repeated. After making your money list, you divide the items into 3 categories. Those categories are named wrongly in examples & it caused me confusion & had to rewrite things out, wasting valuable time.
So glad I found this resource. It's an easy to read, easy to understand, practical guide for anyone to get their finances in order. Thank you Tiffany Aliche for sharing your wisdom with the world.
