Third book in his series about Big Lake. Another page turner.
Everybody seems to have gone crazy in the little mountain community of Big Lake, Arizona. Neighbors are threatening violence, eco-protestors are on the march, flower children are camping in the nearby forest, two of Sheriff Jim Weber’s deputies have gotten into a fistfight in the ButterCup Café, the grocery store manager has locked himself in his office and won’t come out, bears are chasing dogs into houses, and somebody has stolen the town’s mascot. As if that isn’t enough to deal with, a mild mannered retired couple have shot an intruder during a home invasion. By the time this wild tale is finished, more blood will be shed and the good people of Big Lake will be left wondering just how well they really know their neighbors.
Books five stars. Anything less, would just be plain silly! This was once again a great book. I loved it. I always do. My husband and I both read mysteries. So when I break out into laughter, he gives me a funny look. Now though, he'll just say, a Nick Russell book? Yes, they are a mystery. Yes, you will have a surprise at the end. Although, this one and the last one, I guessed early on. But, while solving the murder, there is a lot of other things going on. There's not much time between issues. I've often wondered how the sheriff's department gets any rest. There's something needing their attention all the time. I don't know how sheriff Weber keeps his temper, in control. He has some people you just want to take a baseball bat to!! Have I mentioned I love this series?? I don't think it's the series I am addicted to, (although I really am) as much as it's Nick Russell's writing. Do yourself a very big favor and start with book one, and read this series. You'll thank me later. Again, I'd like to thank Nick Russell, for having his books in Kindle Unlimited. And for your wonderful books, that keep me so well entertained.
Where Book 2 was full of intense action and intrigue, this one is more an adult version of Lake Wobegone. Neighbors bickering, protests for a new cell tower, someone looking for buried treasure in someone else's yard. Someone stole the town mascot, a metal chicken that nobody likes anyway and Mayor Wingate being Mayor Wingate. Add to that a bunch of hippies that get a permit to camp outside of town, who turn out to be more friendly than a lot of the citizens Sheriff Weber has to deal with. There is some drama when an escaped convict makes his way to Big Lake and is promptly killed by a senior citizen. Maybe a surprise or two also. Very enjoyable read!
It seems that Nick Russell has only associated himself with what most men would call “wimps.” As an 85 year old man I have been acquitted with many other men in my time and NEVER ever seen one of them cry yet Nick portrays so many of his male characters as guys who openly cry. In my experience this does no occur in real life situations. Not a bad read, but not very realistic.
The characters are developed well. As a retired small city police chief, the side stories sometimes make me laugh and sometimes make me shake my head. The push pull with the town officials are true to life. The mysteries and police procedural sections keep my attention. These booked are a fun read.
Loved it ! Book three in this wonderful series. I zoomed through this 140 + pages Kindle tale in less than an afternoon. Such odd ball and kooky characters make for a lively read. I quickly jumped into next book of series-(Which I usually never read two in a row by same author). A must read in a must read series. Check it out.
What did the bank robber, Jerry Lee, want when he came to Big Lake after escaping from prison? Why did he invade the home of a retired couple? Why are people digging up back yards and easements all over town? All the answers are in this excellent book. Highly recommended.
I am really enjoying this series. Each book has a great story line that keeps you interested enough to keep on reading. These are books you won't want to put down. I highly recommend this book and series.
I enjoyed this one very much , you actually think that this could really happen , wasn't surprised at the end . i highly recommend this one and looking forward to next one.
Thanks for another in the series that keeps my mind off taking care of my wife in hospice. It takes a certain type book and you are one great author. Thanks so very very much. Doug
Big Lake gets even crazier with an influx of hippies who have a permit to camp the in the National Park. Sheriff Weber is tasked with figuring out why a well-known bank robber has targeted a well-respected couple's Big Lake home. Well written and suspenseful until the end!
This is the second book of this author (in addition to Lynched) that I have read. Interesting story with a completely unexpected end. Waiting to read the next one.
Another wonderful story about Big Lake and its people! I loved it so much I can’t wait for the next book in this series The sheriff is a good man and no fool. The town is full of one problem after another. You will love this book in this series.
I am hooked on this series!! Sheriff Jimmy Webber is smart, has a temper and lots of dry wit. In the midst of a mystery/murder, you will find yourself howling with laughter. Bitter sweet ending.
Interesting tale of several incidents in the life of a small town growing rapidly with conflicting values and problems being addressed by a small group of people with their own conflicts as dramatic as any.
This was another terrific story, and a great addition to the series. It was an intriguing story with many unexpected twists that will keep you guessing until the end. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and author.
I must say I haven't had so much reading this series. There is so kuch love and kindness from all the characters and I can't remember laughing so hard reading a book. This author has come up with a great cast to characters that standout. Bravo!
I have really enjoying this series. The main character of these books comes across as very likeable. The author as a clear idea of what small towns are like.
