Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, eighteenth baron of Dunsany, was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work in fantasy published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes hundreds of short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, he lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, received an honourary doctorate from Trinity College, and died in Dublin.
3.5 stars for some of the stories, 2 stars for others.
I picked up this collection on recommendation of my 20 year old son, who loves Lord Dunsany. The specific stories which were recommended to me were good, but this is definitely not my favorite.
The stories seem to be very much the same, difficult to follow and dream-like.
Common themes/characters: personified mountains or winds or water, Time, jewelry and idol gods. Lots of idol gods. It seems as though you could read the first page of a story and then the last and you wouldn't lose much. Except a lot of other-world descriptions.
Dreadful stuff. This books contains snippets taken from Dunsany's work, nothing remotely containing a beginning, a middle and an end. My advice: Spend your money on something else.
