Has Rosie destroyed her chances of love and happiness for ever?
When Rosie's parents were involved in a train accident, her mother was killed and her father left crippled, unable to earn a living and relying on Rosie to keep the wolf from the door.
With her mother gone and her sweetheart Adam away in the army, Rosie is lonely. She eagerly awaits the letters from him, but they never come. As she grows more disillusioned, Adam's best friend Doug goes out of his way to be charming and attentive. Alone and confused, Rosie blossoms under his evil influence. Soon she is carrying Doug's baby and her father has thrown her out of the house. Realising she has no choice, she agrees to marry Doug.
As if she isn't in enough trouble, Rosie's whole world falls apart when a warm and wonderful letter arrives from Adam... telling her he's on his way home.
Josephine Cox was born in Blackburn, one of ten children. At the age of sixteen, Josephine met and married her husband Ken, and had two sons. When the boys started school, she decided to go to college and eventually gained a place at university but was unable to take this up as it would have meant living away from home. Instead, she went into teaching – and started to write her first full-length novel. She won the ‘Superwoman of Great Britain’ Award, for which her family had secretly entered her, at the same time as her novel was accepted for publication. She is now a No.1 bestselling author with over 40 books to her name.
She wrote dark psychological thrillers under the name Jane Brindle.
Another great book by Josephine Cox, the main characters are Rosie,Adam and Doug Adam and Rosie are sweethearts but while Adam is in the army Doug seduces Rosie and she falls pregnant with his child. Rosie life is changed forever now and she pays dearly for her mistake. Married and living with Doug's parents his dad Ned a quiet downtrodden man and his mother Martha who is evil through and through and makes it her mission to be horrible and torture Rosie just because she married her son. The highs and lows of Rosies life from here is so well written that it had me laughing and shouting at her throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to all.
More than Riches, was such a wonderful, suspenseful, and heartwarming story.
Josephine Cox, is such a wonderful storyteller, usually writing, can’t put down stories, keeps you wanting more, and her stories are so memorable and enjoyable, they are treasured, she is so different from many other authors, that is why she is one of my favourites.
Rosie the main character, her parents were involved in a train accident, her mother was killed and her father was left crippled, unable to earn a living, and rely solely on Rosie. With her mother gone, and her sweetheart, Adam away in the army, Rosie is lonely.
She eagerly awaits his letters from Adam, but they never come. As Rosie is let down, depressed, Adams best friend Doug, goes out of his way to be charming and attentive. Alone and confused, Rosie blossoms under his evil 😈 influence. Soon she is carrying Dougs baby and her father has thrown her out of the house. Realising she has no choice, she agrees to marry Doug. As if she isn’t in enough trouble, her whole world falls apart, when a warm and wonderful letter arrives from Adam, telling her he is on the way home.
The characters in this book, all stand out, and the friendship that Rosie and Peggy have in this book is very special, and make a lovely part of the book.
I was SO INVOLVED in this story that I dreamed it last night!! Previously, I had been involved with narcissists like Doug. They make you live in fear and evil, constantly afraid. To stand up against Doug and his mother Martha to great courage! The twist of events gave Rosie an opportunity to change her life. She was intelligent, strong in spirit, and brave...so she stepped out to build a better life for herself and her son. Unknown to her, Doug was stalking her with evil intent. Now was the time for him to act! Highly Recommended
Rosie's sweetheart, Adam, enlists in the army and is not a very good correspondent. Adam's best friend, Doug, makes advances towards Rosie and she becomes pregnant. At the same time she learns this news, she receives Adam's letter that he is coming home. Telling Adam the truth sends him back to the army. Rosie marries Doug, but doesn't love him. Doug is abusive and Doug's mother is always trying to pit him against her. Her love for Adam never dies.
I really enjoyed this book and the lessons that I felt the author was trying to convey. The "solutions" the the problems of the characters were a bit predictable and I'm one who like surprises. I loved the little typically British expressions that Cox chose to use to give the book a touch of humor. My husband and I escorted tours to the U K for years and it was a joy recalling those quips. I would definitely consider reading more of this authors works.
I was Introduced to an unusual British dialect and enjoyed the different usage of words. Good life story with a continuing love at long last . My first read by Josephine Cox
This book just wasn’t quite there for me. I felt a bit interested at some points in the book. But overall I didn’t really get any satisfaction out of reading it.
This is a well written, fast moving, enjoyable novel. I think I have read too many stories of drunken lout, wife beating husbands to last me a long time. Rosie wants to marry the love of her life Adam but he goes off to join the forces and she doesn't hear from him again. Enter Doug, Adams best friend who goes for her and ends up getting her pregnant. They end of marrying and she soon finds he is not the man she thought he was. Adam returns hoping to sweep Rosie off her feet only to find her expecting his best friends child. Years of cruelty and insanity ensue and Rosie becomes downtrodden and in great danger.

It was OK, but rather predictable. It was also, as I find with so many books, far too long. There were unnecessarily long descriptions sprinkled throughout, and I found myself just longing for the end to see if my predictions were right; unfortunately they were. I t does so often look as if writers are paid by the word, and so put in far too many unessesary ones.
First book I have ever read from Josephine Cox. Quite enjoyed it. Would read her books again.
It's romantic, but frustrating that Rosie and Adam are kept apart until the end. However, both their lives are quite interesting and there are some exciting situations within the book.
First book I have read of Josephine Cox... it was lovely.... the second half was far more interesting than the first one as such the first half was a forced boredom... but finally a good story line... happy ending...
I have read many books by Josephine Cox and have always enjoyed. Some of the books can be quite long, but it's surprising how quickly one gets through a book when a story grips you.
