This is the beginning of a series/trilogy, so the majority of this book was building the plot, getting the background, and getting it all set up to be what I know will be amazing. The characters were all very realistic and believable.
The main character, Alexa, is a 20 year old living alone after her parents disappeared the year before, without a trace. The only family she has left is a grandmother who practices magic who her mother forbade her to see and spend time with, even with the promise that her magic would cure Alexa's diseased body and pain.
After missing a phone call, she leaves her home for the first time in ages to find her grandmother to make sure she's okay, only to find out she's leaving. This leaves her completely alone. After another phone call from her estranged best friend, Alexa is pressured into attending the friend's birthday bash, where she's ridiculed, but catches the eye of a loner guy who nobody really knows anything about.
Getting out of her house more often now, she goes shopping with her friend and again runs into this mysterious guy, who she ends up spending time with and eventually learning she's not quite what she thought she was. She's something special, and the magic her grandmother left her has brought it all out. Now she's on an adventure, traveling away with Lacal to take her spot as what she considers to be vampire queen.
Ok, looking beyond the fact that this could have used a trip to the editor, the errors I came across weren't so much to take away from the story. There were a couple of he's used where she's should have been, as well as quite a few misuses of words- than/then, and possessives in place of plurals, but it was easy enough to see what the author meant and still enjoy the book.
