Ancient Egyptian Proverbs: Mystical Wisdom, Teachings, and Meditations is kinda like starting in the middle of a conversation. If you don’t know anything about ancient Egypt you will miss a lot of the references. Even still, it’s not unlike the Bible or the Yoga Sutras where the general precepts of right living are the same. A first cursory read is an FYI. A second review might focus on proverbs that speak to you. Years later another review will likely reveal new insights. The beauty of the book is best summed at the end of part two.

“Unto those who come across these words, their composition will seem most simple and clear; but on the contrary, as this is unclear, and has the true meaning of its words concealed, it will still be unclear, when, afterwards, the Greeks will want to turn our tongue into their own—for this will be a very great distorting and obscuring of even what has theretofore been written.”

Note the call out to the Greeks for distorting and obscuring ancient Egyptian history. The wisdom then is only for those with ears for understanding which is at least a twice repeated proverb. The conclusion offers tips for meditation and words of power or Hekau. I’ll share my highlights in case anyone wants to skim a few proverbs, but it really is about the personal experience of what speaks to you and meditating upon it until it speaks to you more deeply.

This is a book quickly became one of my favorites in my ancient Egypt / Kemetic collection. There is just enough introductory info, leaving plenty of room for what the book is about; proverbs from Ancient Egypt. It is direct and to the point, well organized and categorized so it's easy to use as a reference as well. It's a book that will become very much do used for that purpose by me. The knowledge of the elders and of the "ancient" time is priceless and a very special piece of my puzzle, at least.

excellent principles for life

I always come back to this book before I start and end each day. I find value from focusing on one proverb for a week. The proverbs is broken down into sections with relevant proverbs for each section. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!
