Don't ask me why I am fascinated by serial killers but I am. And from all the rave reviews for this book I am clearly not the only one. If you do want an informative, no nonsense book about the topic that covers pretty much any aspect you can think of and doesn't try to sensationalize, this is it. There are well written accounts of many serial killers going from obscure to the famously notorious. Excellent informational text that entertains without going over the edge.
If you watch Criminal Minds... then this book is for you. Jammed packed with info on all of the creeps that our parents warned us about. Its a very interesting read.
Like did you know Dahmer ate his victims so they would be apart of him?! Seriously.... woohoo that guy was out there and then some.
I don't want to rate this book because I don't know how to rate this book.
My relationship with this one started when I reached the peak of my obsession with Criminal Minds. (Yes, that is my guilty pleasure and No, I am not ashamed.) There I was, appreciating the writers and creators for making each episode as gruesome as the previous. I thought that their minds are so creative and that there is no way in hell these events could be remotely true in real life.
WRONG.
I hate these people and I hate myself for reading this book.
One day in school, I was in the library and couldn't find anything to read. I ended up picking this up, because I've always been fascinated by this stuff. While I was reading, this annoying guy came up to me. He was always bugging me at lunch, in the halls, etc. and could never seem to take a hint. He asked me what I was reading, and I showed him. He didn't really bother me after that.
I ended up buying it later; it's a great resource for anyone interested in learning about serial killers. It's more of a reference book, but can totally be read cover to cover.
I've read this book from cover to cover several times, it's absolutely fascinating! I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in forensic files type information, has a reference library, writers who're looking for information on serial killers, the list goes on. Some of the information inside is disturbing, but the facts are amazing.
Purchased this at a Books-A-Million in San Antonio in 2012. The first time my husband had ever been in a book store! This book is an amazing resource for all true-crime aficionados. Filled with page after page of details on thousands of the world's most prolific serial killers, as well of ones you will learn of for the first time.
This book also contains quite a bit of legal information, making it a valuable research tool for student of law and criminal justice.
Fascinating and informative, definitely one to read if you’re interested in serial killers from around the world and also other things like VICAP, Modus Operandi’s, etc. But.. I’m gobsmacked that this author didn’t include Myra Hindley and Ian Brady’s ‘story of horror’, but instead, relegated them to the appendix of the book in ‘team killers’. They deserved a spot in the book, and to tell people about what they did to kids, and how one is still subsequently missing.
Also, I felt this author was a little egotistical in places, thinking he was right and no-one else is which was a little annoying, and unwarranted. As he happened to get a few details on some killers completely wrong himself.
Other then those two points, this book was fantastic and I’m hoping to pull some really good quotes for my criminology course next year.
This may seem like an odd choice for a book to "read" but it was really facinating. If you like shows like "Forensic Files" and "Most Evil" you'll like it. This was the 3rd or 4th edition. It's great that it is constantly being updated with new data. The book is formatted like an encyclopedia but it reads like a collection of short stories on the most sordid of humans.
This is a fascinating book. Anything and everything you want to know about the most macabre serial killers are located within these pages. When you sit down to read this, be prepared to be there awhile bc this is a page turner.
I find serial killers fascinating, the ultimate deviance, what must that feel like? If I had ever had serious head trauma, I think I might have become one. :)

Although there are quite a few misspellings and grammatical errors, this book is a fairly good read. The information is presented in such a way that it isn't too boring to read through, but still gives thorough information. Some of the entries were a little lacking (to the point where I wondered why those killers were even included), but the majority of entries provided enough information to give a good picture of the killer, their crimes, and the aftermath.
Some disappointment that some "big hitters", such as H.H. Holmes and Richard Chase were not included (especially with the inclusion of some other lesser known murderers with very short entries), but otherwise a very informative edition that also includes entries on different types of serial murder as well as definitions of various terms and FBI agents that are referenced throughout.
Certainly not an easy casual read, but not a difficult read either.
I, like so many people have a fascination with true crime of all sorts. Serial killers seem to capture our interest more than many other types of criminals and this is an excellent collection of information on the most prolific killers in recent (and not so recent) history. Fantastic for reference purposes when reading other books on similar subjects. My only concern with this book is where the editors were when it was printed. Sentences repeated back to back should never make it to press. Formatting of numbers should be uniform throughout a paragraph at least, if not the entire book. Nitpicking, I know. Just a note. Otherwise, a great collection of information on the subject.
I love this book. It's not just a list of serial killers and how they kill. It also includes relevant topics that cover from different types of motives, tools, common themes of serial killing incidents and people who investigate the killings. Although some "unidentified" killers have been identified, this book is very thorough. Seems like women kill mostly for insurance money, for attention (yup) and for powers (all the nurse killers). Men kill for more diverse reasons, but seems like sexuality and childhood trauma (again, sex wise trauma too) plays a big role. It also seems
This was OK, but the edition I got from the library proved to be wildly outdated; the Green River Killer had not yet been arrested when this came out. There were quite a few mistakes in here (for instance, that guy who wrote the book on the Atlanta Child Murders was CHET Dettlinger, not Dave) but it still made for an interesting read. At least I established that this is not just a rehash or combination of Hunting Humans: The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers: Volume 1 and Hunting Humans: The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers, Vol. 2; this is much more wide-ranging and has almost more index than text.
I actually got the second edition and I'm in love with it! It's missing a number of serial killers (especially from other countries but that's to be expected) but overall I'm extremely pleased with this book. It goes into a fair amount of detail where available and has some really good general information on crime. Definitely worth the purchase!
Only about 300 pages are dedicated to the main content, the rest are lengthy index, appendices, etc. The author wasted the limited space to discuss generic subjects such as modus operandi and memorabilia among others instead of making good use of it by covering more serial killers. HH Holmes for example was mentioned several times but didn't get an individual coverage.
Decent book to have around to read for short periods here and there. Due to the ever evolving information of the subject matter it is a bit redundant to have a book on serial killers. The breakdown in interesting though and there were a few of the lesser known cases listed.
It’s the psychology that interests me. Some killers are too gruesome to stomach, but a little at a time my brother and I (closet homicide detectives) made our way through this book. Once was enough.
An encyclopedia on about 100 different serial killers. It is an older book so no newer ones. Based on the info they had on the individual killers would be either detailed or not.
Not a whole lot of pictures in the book. If there were in black and white.
