After an injury forces cowboy Gil Howard from the rodeo circuit and an accident kills his girlfriend, he seeks out his grandfather in Colorado, a rancher and minister in a sect of faith healers. Wild, restless, and angry at his alcoholic father, Gil drifts in a life suddenly foreign to him until he meets intriguing rancher's daughter, Katie Campbell—only to find no one wants him with her, including Katie herself, who has a longstanding attachment to her childhood friend and sweetheart. When a mountain storm throws the two of them together, Gil finds himself in love for the first time and his life begins to come together in unexpected ways. Then tragedy strikes and he is left struggling to reconcile his past with his new faith and his shattered dreams. Will there ever be another message from Katie in the cedar tree?
Ohmegosh, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was well written and kept my attention firmly on the storyline from beginning until the very end! I could not have asked for more from a novel. There was faith, love, hope, and happiness mixed with tragedy. I know that deep down, many different individuals could relate to this story if only they would give it a chance. I highly recommend this book.
Very well written and edited. Although the title indicates this is part of a series, can be read as a stand-alone. This is an evangelical story.
Although I do not read much Christian fiction, I did enjoy this G-rated romance. As someone who grew up in farm country, the author got a lot right: the beauty and rhythm of farming/ranching, the incredibly difficult grind of seven-days-a-week, rain/sleet/snow-or shine, the worry and poverty, the reliance on friends and neighbors. I'm also familiar with the views of Christian Scientists, who eschew medical care over prayer and in-faith healers, sometimes leading to very sad results, as happened in this book (although the Christian Scientist faith was not specifically named, I've made that assumption, based on personal experience.) All of those elements were very, very well done.
Whether or not you agree with the religious aspects of the book, or the appropriateness of dating and marriage between the two main characters, given their age difference, because of where I grew up, I recognize the realism of the story and truly enjoyed the author taking me back to the farm -- even a life as difficult as the one described in this story.
Recommend for fans of Christian Romance AND fans of rural/farming stories.
I.LOVE.THIS.BOOK!!!! Oh my, it's just one of those that I thought to myself, "I'm so glad I read this"! It just made me happy. It had EVERYTHING I love! Romance (sigh) I have a bit of a crush on Gil, (what a guy). Drama, LAUGHTER (so hard to find a book where I laugh out loud!), great squabbling between leading characters which I find endearing and so fun to read! And it was realistic and most important were the Christian morals wound throughout the whole book! Just an awesome story that I enjoyed every hour of even until 1 am! Everyone run out and get this!
Finally, it's very impressive to me when authors take time to respond back to their fans AND Danni did just that!!! If I wasn't already in love with her book NOW I'm even more so and just love her too for being such a sweet lady to respond to a new and forever fan (as I told her) :)!
The best news is there is a sequel and I CANNOT.WAIT!!!! Please hurry Danni! :
awesomeness!! this is so funny to read! I enjoyed every bit. in the beginning for me was a slow start but once I had time to get into this book I finished with so much laughter!! when you feel like you just don't want to continue reading, please don't give up. it'll be worth it till the end. love it!! good read.
Where did my review go? I could swear I wrote a review--well, that is too grand sounding--a blurb about this book. Clearly with five stars, you can guess I really liked it. I particularly liked the author's talent at snarky dialog.
