“The only other calling I ever felt was an irrepressible desire to be Captain of my own Starship. I was born in the wrong century and it wasn’t possible, so I chose to explore the universe by writing fiction instead. Books are doors to endless adventure.” -KMM

Karen Marie Moning is the #1 NYT bestselling author of the Fever Series and Highlander novels.

An alum of the Immaculate Conception Academy, at seventeen she attended Purdue University where she completed a BA in Society & Law, with minors in Philosophy, Creative Writing and Theatre, while working full time as a bartender and computer consultant. She intended to go to law school but after an internship with a firm of Criminal Attorneys, decided against it. For the next decade, she worked in insurance, where she wrote intercompany arbitrations and directed commercial litigation. At the age of thirty, she decided it was time to get serious and do what she’d always wanted to do: write fiction novels.

Beyond the Highland Mist was published in 1999 and nominated for two RITA awards. She then published six more novels in her award-winning HIGHLANDER series, and received the RITA Award in 2001 for The Highlander’s Touch.

In 2004, she began writing the #1 New York Times bestselling FEVER series. The books have been optioned twice for potential franchise development by Twentieth Century Fox and DreamWorks Studios, but the rights are currently held by Moning who has expressed a desire to one day see it as a television series. Her novels have been published in over thirty countries. She divides her time between Ohio and Florida and is working on two future projects for Random House Publishing.

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” – Jorge Luis Borges

These are the sexiest books you'll ever read! Honestly, they wake a part of your Libido that you never knew slumbered! What I love about these books is not only do they make you feel 'happy', if you know what I mean, but they are such beautiful love stories! They're the type of love stories that make you want to sing and dance for love so precious, but most of all they inspire hope that no matter how long you wait and pray for your true love, you're hopes will not be in vain cause everyone finds their own highlander eventually. For me that the best kind of hope a girl could ask for.

Okay there are serious spoilers in this review. Highlander spoilers, Fever Spoliers, you name it. It's a spoiler festival complete with elephant ears and corn dogs.

So I was watching this movie one time, it had The Rock in it, so you can guess it wasn't an Oscar winner. But, it was one of those treasure hunting type movies. And to find the map, they found three pieces of a map and were having a hard time trying to see how they fit together, blah, blah, blah ....Until! The Rock, the genius that he is, laid one on top of the other and there it was, an island with the X in the middle and everything. Voila! So why I am I telling this stupid story...? Okay.

Let's all agree that if you're deciding whether or not to read this book the chances are very high that you've just finished the Fever series, were blown away, and want more Moning. Right? (If not, stop reading this review right now and go read the Fever series.) Now if you're reading my review to see if it's as good as the Fever Series. Sorry. Cutesy grin...it's not.

Back to the map analogy, if you try and fit all the of the edges of each book together, they are mediocre romances with 5-8 being better than 1-4. But its the same stuff in each of them. Virgin in her early 20's, travels back in time, Scottish Highlander with a freakishly huge penis pops her cherry, Bob's Yur Uncle they're married and most often pregnant by the end of the book, oh and a Scobby Doo mystery in the middle part. There were a couple of exceptions but -- you know the drill.

However!

If you lay these novels one on top of the other it is basically the anatomy of Jerricho Barrons. Seriously, it's like 7 and half shades of Jerricho Barrons if you read this series start to finish.

Book One: Beyond the Highland Mist is the least like JB but he's in there. Maybe the JB before all the shit happened to him in the desert. The embryo that will be JB, as it were

Book Two: To Tame A Highland Warrior is absolutely the weirdo dog pissing circles around you side to JB. (credit Cerwiden) You don't want to see Jerricho Barrons when he's angry. Jerricho walks down a lonely highway, thumbing a ride, ala Bill Bixbie.

Book Three: The Highlander's Touch is the I'm-way-the-hell-older-than-all-you-bitches side to JB. He's seen it all, heard it all, killed it all. He's a man with a past, many pasts to be precise. He had a past when your Great Grandfather was a sperm in your Great-great grandfather's junk.

Book Four: Kiss of the Higland is the front of the house JB. The suit wearing, swarmy, diplomat that JB morphs into every now and again. The single reason he owns some of those ridiculous cars.

Book Five: The Dark Highlander is clearly the part of JB who is really just looking for that damn book to release his freakishly monstrous and violent son from the curse of eternal insanity. His methods may be questionable but it was all for love! Damn it!

Book Six: (by far, my favorite) The Immortal Highlander: This is the true beginning of that sexy smart mouth who truly likes to talk about, not just sex, the clitoris specifically. Dayum! The first of the Highland men who is the most like that part of JB which inspired me to say, "I'd hit that."

Book Seven: Spell of the Highlander becomes the glue that binds all of these elements together. For while this shade of JB has the least depth, he lives in it most often. This is the acerbic, demanding, and difficult JB that is constantly telling Mac what to do. He's the guy who killed a chick for a night of passion because 'he needed it.' And the guy who considered killing Mac for the majority of the first two Fever Books. And, the guy who fucked over his last girlfriend until she was a skinless mess. (As an aside, that shit was messed up. JB is - seriously - a bad boyfriend.)

Novella Eight: Into the Dreaming was written after the Fever series. (Strike that, it was before. My bad) But: did you like the beginning of Book Four? You know the part I'm talking about. And you know you did! Well, here is the story that gave birth to that scene. But, It's a girl doing it to a boy.

And there you have it. 7.5 shades of Jerricho Barrons. So do I recommend reading this just for the anthropological study of Jerricho Barron? Oh that's tough. Um. Yes, if you have time, no if you don't.

I read this series after theFever series. I fell in love with the historical elements and the lore elements; lest not forget some serious alpha males. The writing was well done, love scenes not cheesy & the females weren't weak. They were all pretty well predictable and insecure while still being relatively confident outwardly. Loved how the series revisited characters

Über sexy, gloriously hot, HIGHLANDER MEN in a package that is so worth their weight in platinum.

#1 Hawk finally meets a lady that he cannot coerce to his bed and this seems to ensnare his heart on levels even he did not expect to exist.

#2 A secret is only a secret if one does not know about it.

#3 Circenn Brodie is a man of immeasurable talent and a life span to go with it.

#4 Highland laird Drustan MacKeltar took the ultimate sleep of a lifetime only to awake to a beauty barely covered, Gwen Cassidy.

#5 Drustan MacKeltar can be the bad boy at my door any day of the week. he can tie me to a bed and do all the things he had running through his head.

#6 Adam Black is the bad boy of the Faery, but this bad boy has taken it too far when he is cursed to live a s a mortal and is subjected to not being seen.

#7 Cian MacKeltar is a man trapped with no real place to run because he will be reclaimed by his prison at anytime, anyplace.

I absolutely love this series. I was first introduced to it when I randomly grabbed an audio book version of Beyond the Highland Mist from my local library when I was commuting an hour to work every day. (If you have the opportunity to listen to any of these books as audio DO IT! Phil is incredible!)

After the first book I went back and borrowed another audio book and then another, not even knowing some of them repeated characters and elaborated on additional story lines. I finally bit the bullet and bought the whole bundle and I am so glad I did. Being able to read all of the novels in order gave so much more depth to each subsequent story line, however, you do not have to read the entire series to enjoy one book. They are each excellent as stand alone novels (I can tell you this honestly since I listened to the first, third, and forth book out of order and nothing was ruined). When I finally did have all of them in my hot little hands, I loved each and every one of these novels just as much as the last. Do not be afraid of the price of this series, it is worth every penny!

This series is not only incredibly well written but the characters are developed and their motivations believable. The female leads are intelligent women with gumption and the male leads are about as sexy as you'll find. Toss in some mystical Highland settings and interfering faeries and you've got literary gold.

Every time I read a Highland "romance" novel or a time travel novel, I compare it to this series. If you like a little bit of history with your fantasy, go with The Highlander Series. If you prefer a little bit of fantasy with your history, look for Outlander, but The Highlander Series far exceeds that The Outlander Series in my mind.

I am SO GLAD this was an option! Now, before you look at this and say, "Ew, romance novels..." I must say this. I am not a fan of romance novels because I am a reader who prefers 19th century French literature above all else...unless it is Poe or Shakespeare. Yes! I adore Clockwork Orange and Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse 5 and Karen Moning!

So why is a 7 book romance series on my favorites shelf? BECAUSE THEY WERE THAT GOOD! Moning webs this BEAUTIFUL, complex web through 7 books she later uses as a back story for the Fever series. I prefer the Highlander series to the Fever series because I love the amount of Celtic myth. Yes, there's love, but not really the point! Adam Black is a deep, unpredictable, complex character that ties all seven books together and kick starts the Fever series.

I read a chapter to my husband while skipping over the ooey-gooey girl emotions and the sex and just read him the dialogue and descriptive scenes. He loved it! Moning writes very well! Her stories are filled with depth and humor. Her heroines are intelligent, down to earth women with standards! She does not write the flaky, shallow Disney Damsel in Distress! Her women are NEVER in distress! Well...nothing they can't get themselves out of on their own. Honestly, these books read more like a light fantasy novel with a lot of Celtic myth.

I loved these books, a sucker for a love story with a hot male lead in it! Let's face it these kind of men if they did exist would probably be quite boring as you have to spend a lot of hours in the gym to get a honed body as these men seem to be gifted with. The leading ladies seem to be as God made women, full and voluptuous, think Elizabeth Taylor or Marilyn Monroe, if only women like these were fashionable nowadays. I loved that these books helped you escape from the everyday mundaneness and I love the way she incorporates some of the history of the Fae from her Fever Series books. Love Ms Moning can't wait for her next installment from the Fever Series. Once you start reading this Highlander series you won't be able to put them down!

Just because I rated this a three, doesn't mean I didn't enjoy every guilty minute. I have a new understanding of my grandmother, who loved romance novels. There is a comfort and joy knowing that there will always be a happy ending, and that you [the heroine, in your imaginings] are loved above all things. Naïve utopia is certainly the path to sweet dreams.
I have read the Fever series and began the Highlander series for the MacKeltar backstory. That being said, I enjoyed Adam Black's Immortal Highlander the most.

Fantastical tales of Far & Druid Highlanders

Morning has done a wonderful job of pulling her readers into each individual highlander's life leading you on an impossibly fantastic journey as the each find their true mate. I have enjoyed these books! I have had this collection for a few years and go back to re-read them. Though they are all written as stand alone stories they are interwoven as the characters in each one meet in later stories. Enjoy the adventure with these Scottish Highlanders and their women

Honestly, I have not been so enthralled by a series of books in years!! From the start of 'Kiss of the Highlander' (I read them out of order) to 'Spell of the Highlander', I could not put these books down. The author not only brought an AMAZING story line, but also added humor via the heroine, which I absolutely loved (mainly because I could relate)!! Buy the series...you honestly won't regret it!! :)

I loved this series. It was sexy, funny original I loved the twins, and Adam the most. I think...well I know that my only problem was that the stories were somewhat redundant. Why do all your female leads HAVE TO be insecure virgins?!?? I was so sick of it towards the end. Idk did anyone else see that pattern?

I was given this series as parting gift from my late aunt. She loved to read and because of her, I have nearly completed my master's in library science. I loved hearing individual accounts and how all these characters are connected in some form or other. I loved all of them, but if I had to pick just one that is a tie between book 4 and 7.

I rated this as "okay" because many of the stories are very redundant. However, some of them are pretty good. Books 1- 3 are not great and don't even need to be read to follow the story line. I recommend reading books 4-7, especially if you've read the Fever series

If you are looking for a quick, fun, magical, medieval, funny, romance, ~spicy~ book, read this series! I couldn’t put it down after I read Kiss of the Highlander (I read it out of order but then was HOOKED) Like other reviews, books 4-7 have re-occurring characters and themes (Druid, dark magic, Fae). Most of the books follow a similar story line (some sort of time travel involved with modern day woman and a medieval Scottish Highlander with slow love burn story line). And I will do a deeper dive for the other stories in the Highlander series:

Beyond the Highland Mist: 1/5
Hawk & Adrienne’s story is probably the least memorable to me but it does give a start to Adam Blacks background.

To Tame a Highland Warrior: 4/5
I LOVED Grimm & Jillian’s story especially learning about Berserker lore. I also loved how their story began when they were younger and you get little snips of the childhood adventures together.

The Highlanders Touch: 3/5
Circenn & Lisa’s story is okay but it starts to get more into the Fae. Another appearance of Adam Black’s background plays into this book.

Kiss of the Highlander: 5/5
If you only want to read one of the book in this series- seriously read this one!! Drustan & Gwen’s story is so entertaining from start to finish and it also begins the Druid & magic & Fae themes into the rest of the series.

The Dark Highlander: 4/5
Daegus (Drustan’s brother) & Chloe is another good love story but with much darker themes. This is when the series takes a more serious turn imo.

The Immortal Highlander: 4/5
Adam Black!!! You finally get his story with Gabrielle. Don’t wanna spoil too much but it’ll definitely change your perfective about Adam Black.

The Spell of the Highlander: 3/5
Cian & Jessi were inseparable from start to finish and definitely felt the most romantic story out of the series (esp the end)

4 stars overall for the whole series. It's a easy and entertaining read most of the time, though one in the series was so terrible I didn't bother finishing it (Spell of the Highlander).
Predicable but likeable characters and a plot that is mostly the same line in each book. But if I wanted deep meaning , twists and turns and sub plot on subplot I'd look elsewhere. These are comfort reads.
Could have used way less virginity worship and more spice in the "explicit" scenes , the fade to black was used more often than I liked but that's only personal preference I guess. Worth the read if this is your genre IMHO

I picked these up because the Fever series is one of my absolute faves! I’m so disappointed. This series is so predictable and soapy. If you like cheesy damsel in distress playing coy, this is for you. I so much more appreciated the kick ass female characters of Mikayla and Dani over these books. Could not finish. Only got part way through Book 2 hoping they would get better but no luck.

Addictive!!!

I have all the hard copies of this series but I had to put these on my kindle so I can read these while my husband sleeps so I don't bother him with a reading lamp. I LOVE this whole series and reading these over and over never gets old. Thank you Karen Moning for being brilliant!

I love reading her books, but why is it in every single book she writes the main characters that are women are always blond hair? She doesn't mix it up. All the men are dark hair. Come on. All the couples are the same, it's boring after awhile.
