Former Las Vegas Homicide Detective Jim Snow has found himself in a tenuous position with his partner Alice James. She’s the other half of their Private Eye firm James & James and she’s back in her hometown tending to her sick mother and contemplating a career change.
This leaves Snow alone in Las Vegas to work his newest case involving the drowning of a former Deputy District Attorney on Lake Mead. But that’s only half the job. He’ll also have to find the victim’s monkey that was with her in her boat that night—and babysit until he can find a primate shelter with a vacancy.
Snow struggles to uncover the events leading up to the drowning, dealing with a diverse assortment of suspects including the victim’s twin sister, an ambulance-chasing estranged husband, an unscrupulous loan shark, and an ex-convict with a bad attitude.
Adding to Snow’s frustration sifting through the clues, he’ll have to work this case on his own—with a monkey riding shotgun instead of the brilliant Alice James.
Rex Kusler was born in Missouri and raised in a small town in Iowa. He spent his most formative years reading Mad Magazine and playing tiddlywinks. His writing began with a newsletter for a beer club he founded in San Jose in 1982. Soon afterward he tried his hand at short stories. After success selling some of them to a few regional magazines he began writing novels. Seven years, four novels, three agents, and a pile of rejection letters later, he gave up--for a while. In 2003 he wrote ANGELA. In 2009 he completed the first novel in his Las Vegas Mystery Series PUNCTURED, based on his experience selling his trailer for cash in an RV storage lot after dark. After success as a self-published e-book, it was re-released in May 2011 by Amazon Publishing. The second in the series is ASHES TO DUST, followed by DESERT DROP, and many others.
I've enjoyed Kusler's Las Vegas Mystery series. "Sinker" is sixth in the series. I haven't read them all but did enjoy 1 - 3 (Punctured #1; Ashes to Dust #2; and Desert Drop #3). I enjoyed all three and I liked this latest offering by author Kusler, too.
This series is a lighthearted romp. Jim Snow, an ex-Homicide detective and ex-professional gambler, and Alice James, an ex-cocktail waitress and ex-cop work together at the James & James Detective Agency. Alice is visiting family in Detroit during this book and doesn't make much of an appearance. Jim is at the forefront of trying to find out whether an ex-District Attorney drowned or was actually murdered. Spending time with Jim this time is beer drinking Terry, a monkey that belonged to the dead woman.
I like Kusler's writing style. Light, fun, quick reads. Lots of memorable characters including protagonists Jim and Alice.
I recommend this to anyone who wants a light mystery, or remembers and liked the TV show "The Rockford Files - Seasons 1-6 & Movies Complete Series."
I did notice a few proofreading/editing issues but there's weren't too many and they didn't distract me too much from the story. I sat down and read it straight through in a couple of hours.
NOTE: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
“The monkey squeaked in reply, bolted forward, stopping in front of the container of French fries. He sat down, reached for a fry and bit off half of it, chomping, squeaking, and batting his eyes at Snow.” – Sinker
An entertaining and wonderfully tongue-in-cheek mystery. A witty, fast-paced fun read.
James "Jim" Snow is working alone in this mystery. His Partner at James and James Detective Agency, Alice James, is back east looking after her mother and considering a job offer tendered. Jim does check in with Alice and bounce ideas off her during his investigation.
A mother wants her daughter's death investigated. It had been ruled an accidental drowning, the woman liked to fish at night on Lake Mead in the summer when it was so hot during the day. Her daughter's pet Capuchin monkey was missing as well.
The monkey was an easy find and Jim is living in the dead woman's triplex home until a sanctuary can be found to take the monkey. The woman's identical twin sister lives in the other half of the building.
Doing what all private eyes do, Jim pokes around, asking questions, and putting the pieces together. Author Rex Kusler does a terrific job of keeping the story moving along as he builds toward the answer, dropping a twist or two in along the way.
Not giving ANY spoilers because this story is way too much fun to give anything away. Like detective Jim Snow, you may find yourself believing every suspect did the deed. The wrap up is rational and the story ends in a very satisfying manner. Fun read that will keep you guessing. Recommended.
My husband and I both love this book. The characters are really interesting and you have to love Terry the monkey. I thought I knew the murderer from the beginning but I was wrong.
I don't think I would like to be married to Snow but I love him anyway. I am really enjoying this series now I'm going to be sent to get to the ninth book. Hopefully it won't be the last. Snow is just clueless and so funny and distinctly male. I was so afraid that he would lose Alice I'm glad she came back. I recommend this book highly very entertaining and well worth reading.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mysteries- Rex included a monkey in this book and he was a hoot! Most authors don't know how to end a story but Rex does. There is always a surprise ending to his stories.
Mr. Kusler is keeping me up late because I don't want to put the book down. This one moved right along and was interesting right up to the last. I'm looking forward to #7.
Private Eye Jim Snow follows an accidental death which could turn out to be homicide, with his partner Alice out of town. A Capuchin monkey adds some humour to the case
