John Lister Illingworth Fennell (1918–1992), Professor of Russian at Oxford University. Best known to generations of students as author of the Penguin Russian Course.
Just finished reading through this book. I highly recommend this introduction to the Russian language. It seems to get all the basics down (verb conjugations, declensions, and general grammar). The exercises are good and the reading passages are manageable for beginners, minus a few which left me running to my Russophone friends. On a handful of occasions there were words in the reading passages which did not appear in the listed vocabulary, but that's a minor irritant. In short, students who are making their first effort at Russian would do well to choose this book.
