Scott Hahn is a renowned Catholic theologian, apologist, speaker, and bestselling author whose work has had a profound impact on contemporary biblical theology and Catholic thought. A former Presbyterian minister, Hahn converted to Catholicism in 1986 after an intense personal and theological journey, which he details in his popular book Rome Sweet Home, co-written with his wife, Kimberly Hahn. Their story of conversion has inspired countless readers around the world and remains a landmark in modern Catholic apologetics.
Hahn holds the Father Michael Scanlan Chair of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990. He is also the founder and president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting biblical literacy among the laity and biblical fluency among clergy. Through the Center, Hahn leads a wide range of initiatives, including publications, pilgrimages, Bible studies, and the scholarly journal Letter and Spirit.
Educated at Grove City College (B.A.), Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Marquette University (Ph.D. in Systematic Theology), Hahn brings a deep academic foundation to his work. His dissertation, Kinship by Covenant, was later published by Yale University Press and received praise for its theological insight and scholarly rigor.
Throughout his career, Hahn has emphasized the covenant as the key to understanding salvation history, showing how the biblical narrative reveals a divine plan that unites all of humanity into God's family. His works explore themes such as the Eucharist, the role of Mary, the sacraments, and the authority of the Church, often drawing on the writings of the early Church Fathers to bridge the ancient faith with modern understanding.
He is the author or editor of over forty books, including The Lamb’s Supper, Hail, Holy Queen, First Comes Love, Letter and Spirit, Swear to God, Reasons to Believe, The Creed, The Fourth Cup, and Holy Is His Name. Many of his books have become staples in Catholic households, study groups, and seminaries.
In addition to his writing, Hahn is a highly sought-after speaker, having delivered thousands of lectures across the United States and abroad. He appears regularly on EWTN and has collaborated with Lighthouse Catholic Media to bring his teachings to an even broader audience.
Scott Hahn lives in Ohio with his wife Kimberly. They have six children and numerous grandchildren. Together, the Hahns continue to lead efforts in evangelization and Catholic education, embodying a lifelong commitment to deepening faith and understanding through Scripture and tradition.

The New Evangelization is the latest buzz phrase in the Catholic world. Everyone is using it, and it seems like there's always a new Catholic book being written on the subject. Ralph Martin addresses the subject in The Urgency of the New Evangelization, and Cardinal Wuerl also had his say in his book New Evangelization: Passing on the Catholic Faith Today. In one of his latest books, Evangelizing Catholics, Dr. Scott Hahn has decided to weigh in on the matter as well.

The book is divided into three parts - The Call, The Response, and The Message. Part I - The Call goes into detail on what the New Evangelization is, including what it is; where/when it started and how its grown; how it is a Catholic reality; and how it is a mission for the whole Church. If you are familiar at all with the New Evangelization most of this information won't be new to you. It was interesting to read his description of three notable byproducts (read conversions) due to the New Evangelization. These three names are Abby Johnson (former Planned Parenthood worker, Kevin James (Hollywood actor), and Francis Beckwith (former President of the Evangelical Theological Society). Each came to the Catholic Church through different means, but all were results of the New Evangelization.

Part II - The Response shows different models and methods in the New Evangelization. The first two chapters in this section look at the Gospels and the Early Church for lessons. Dr. Hahn says that the "blueprint for the New Evangelization can be found in the Gospels of Matthew and John. These lessons include - 1. Proclaim a Person (Jesus), 2. Proclaim by Words and Deeds, 3. Proclaim the Church, 4. Proclaim the Fulfillment of the Covenant, and 5. Proclaim the Sacraments. After these two chapters are my favorite two chapters in the book. Chapter 8 puts the emphasis on evangelization beginning at home, and I wholeheartedly agree. Even if you go to weekly Mass and send your kids to Catholic schools, it is still up to you to instruct your children in the way of the Faith. Chapter 9 explains the different between a ministry (reserved for clergy) and an apostolate (reserved for laity). He also clears up the muddy waters of the role of clergy and the role of laity. Using St. Paul's example of being one body but different members, he lets us know that is not the eye's (clergy) job to be an ear (laity) or vice-versa. Feel free to substitute whatever body parts you want for that example. The point is we each have a part in the Church, and we shouldn't overstep our bounds and try to do what is not ours to do.

Part III - The Message talks about the subjects of sin, atonement, covenants, and love. In these chapters, Dr. Hahn not only lays out the content of the New Evangelization and puts it clearly that conversion is a lifelong process. There is no "once saved always saved." We must be ready evangelizers and ready to be evangelized. When it comes down to it, the New Evangelization isn't just about converting the "unsaved" but also about educating the faithful. The book closes with two realities - 1. everyone dies and 2. everyone who died lives on in heaven, hell, or purgatory. Where will you spend the rest of it? As with all of Dr. Hahn's books they make you think, this one is no different. If you have an interest in the New Evangelization, check out this book and the others mentioned at the beginning of this review.

So beautifully written!!!

• “The Catholic Church is in no way incidental to salvation. To belong to her, to be alive in Christ through her, is to participate in God Saving us through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

• “if you omit the cross, you omit the essence of Christianity. If you omit the Eucharist, however, you omit what explains how Christ’s death became the means to our salvation”

• “The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass isn’t simply in the New Testament. It IS the New Testament. The Eucharist is the New Testament. Jesus says, ‘This…is the new covenant in my blood’ (Lk 22:20). The Latin word for covenant used in that verse is testamentum — “testament”.

I wasn't sure if I should mark this as a Lent Reading since I began it before Ash Wednesday, but decided to do it anyway.

This is my first book by Scott Hahn and though as a theology student I had heard most of what is covered here, this is an engaging and introductory book that personally, settled the matter or at least opened new perspectives in discussions I have quite frequently with family and friends.

It's good to be able to reflect and explain with the help of a clear text like this, which takes us takes us back to Scripture, the Early Church with the Church Fathers, and the recent work of Popes from the Catechism to Encyclicals and Apostolic Exhortations.

The differences between apostolate and ministry, the meaning of covenant as testament, are some of the things I learned.

I have read many of Scott Hahn's books, but I will not hesitate to say that this is my favorite one yet. With a flood of books on the New Evangelization coming out in recent years, Dr. Hahn still manages to add much that is fresh to the conversation.

The book is divided into three major parts: The Call, The Response, and The Message. Prepare to be challenged in each section starting in the very first chapter: "[The New Evangelization] is the mission with which you and I have been charged. And it is a mission shot through with the weight of eternity, one for which each of us 'will give an account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead' (1 Pet 4:5)." This is a responsibility with everlasting consequences, and the author does his level best to equip us for this duty.

The first part provides a fascinating history of the New Evangelization, lets us know that evangelization is not the sole property of Protestants, emphasizes the indispensable role of the laity in evangelization, and stresses that evangelization involves the whole person (mind, body, and spirit) over the course of a lifetime (with a special emphasis on the Eucharist).

The second part begins by looking at the proclamation of the gospel writers as a model for us today and then looking at the early Church's radical approach to family and society that still applies today. Next the focus is on the seven steps to make the family the primary field of evangelization. But it doesn't stop there as we spread the good news (with hints how best and most appropriately to do so) to friends, neighbors, coworkers, fellow students, the media and more.

The last part serves as a catechesis and apologetic for the Catholic faith. We Catholics must be well grounded in our understanding of sin, atonement, covenant, and the Mass if we are to be properly equipped to share the Faith with others. Hahn does a phenomenal job, in a clear and concise way, of helping the reader understand these key concepts. Finally, we are told that we are called to be faithful, not successful -- it is not "our" success, anyway, and we only set ourselves up for disappointment. "[F]idelity is what God wants from us. He wants us to live the Gospel, and he wants us to proclaim it. He wants us to love him, and he wants us to lead others to his love." (166)

I cannot recommend this book too highly. Get a copy. Mark it up and then keep it handy. Get additional copies for friends and family. Recommend it to your pastor and see if you can start a reading group at your parish. Or maybe just gather your Catholic friends and do something on your own. This book will get you fired up for the New Evangelization by its powerful call, helpful approaches, and beautiful exposition of the faith.

As with every other book of his, Scott Hahn remains eminently readable. This was a good work and I definitely enjoyed reading it. I must say that during the sections where he lays out his "how to", which honestly, is most of the book, not much is new. However, once he began the section which broke down the basic *content* of the Kerygma, he had several valuable insights. For example, when speaking about the Eucharist and answering the objection that the Mass wasn't in the New Testament, he says,

"It *is* the New Testament. The Eucharist is the New Testament. That's what Jesus himself says in the Gospels as he institutes the Eucharist: 'This...is the new covenant in my blood'. The Latin word for covenant used in that verse in testamentum...It was their liturgical proximity to what Christ called the New Testament - the fact that they were read in the Mass where the Eucharist was celebrated - that eventually earned those books their collective title."

And that's precisely why I'll likely always enjoy Hahn. Even though the Scott Hahn drinking game (where you drink every time he mentions "Covenant") would likely knock me out in a matter of minutes, it is these types of insights and connections that make me enjoy him when I'm looking for some casual theology or good catechetical material.

Quick read. Worth your time.

One of the most concise presentations of the faith I have come across. This book sets the New Evangelization into its context, shows how everyone is meant to be involved and what the specific mission fields are for each person, and then goes on to offer the essential kerygma to illustrate how we evangelize! This will be at the top of my recommend list!

Finally getting around to finishing this! It's very interesting & well written. As a Protestant with only a stereotypical understanding of Catholicism it answers a lot of questions in simple language without getting too bogged down in theology.

Who knew 5 years ago I would be joining a Church that needed evangelizing? Hahn does a great job of describing the reasons for Catholics not knowing their faith, and practical suggestions to help the situation.

Great book from probably the most famous modern Catholic convert. " We evangelize not just through our words, but through our deeds. Not just through what we say, but through how we live. Not just through what we share with others, but through what we bear for others."

This is a great book. I will be advising our members at St. Michael Apologetics Society to get one. If I can get a discount I can even purchase it for the group. In fact we can use this as reference in our Manual for Lay Catholic Apologists.

I was disappointed in this book--I wanted real suggestions, and there really weren't any. There was a lot of rehash of Hahn's other books and not that many new suggestions.

This is the first book by Dr. Hahn that I have read. My first impression was that the book as a tad overly verbose with a dash of judgement in his preaching. In fact, most of the thirty-three (33) or so times he refers to Protestants, he does so in order to contrast what they do or believe with what Catholics should do or believe. The problem here is that there is really very little that is uniformly accepted within the hundreds of Protestant denominations, and his anecdotal experience was so different than mine that I frequently thought that if that is what you were doing as a Protestant, you were doing it wrong (which is of course why there are hundreds of Protestant denominations). Here is the thing … nearly all of these comparisons were not really needed to understand what he was trying to say, so they mostly just get in the way of the message. They also add tacit support to the “Triumphalism” problem he warns about on pg 32 (after all, if the author feels a need to highlight all of the Protestant errors to explain the why, the how and the what of Catholic Evangelization, you can’t be too surprised when others pick up and advance those same judgemental arguments).

This Book is divided into three (3) parts: The Call, The Response and the Message.

Part I – The Call: Understanding the New Evangelization … [The Why]

Part II – The Response: Models and Methods for the New Evangelization … [The How]

Part III – The Message: The Content of the New Evangelization … [The What]

As usual Dr. Scott Hahn presents a compelling presentation on how to evangelize Catholics. Yes, most Catholics today need to be evangelized in their own faith. I read this book, which was a part of the New Evangelization course I am taking, and even though I only needed to read a few chapters, I thought it was important enough to finish the whole book. It is quite readable, and yet Dr. Hahn is very determined that we need to be out there, and to "make disciples of all the world".

Great overview of the mission field and the mission plan for Catholics. This is a quick, easy read, addressing why Catholics don't understand their faith better (poor catechesis) and how to fix it. Also contains as good game plan to start small in essentially re-evangelizing the culture as a we encounter coworkers, friends, etc.

And it's seriously a quick read. One afternoon, tops.

Great title! Double meaning. We must evangelize ourselves as Catholics as we continue to grow in the one true faith. At the same time we must be evangelizing those around us. At Baptism, this became our mission. This book is full of great thoughts on exactly what evangelizing is from a Catholic perspective.
