This is a long winded book with a huge ammount of really unnecesary unconfirmed details. Yalloo is a master investigator but I believe he read far too much of his own conclusions into the Pontiff's motives. I feel that he was out for the kill; really in search of sensationalism and finding really nothing that is very convincing.

Nie byłem fanem świętości Jana Pawła II. Zanim to stało się modne. :) Częściowo za sprawą autora tej książki i jego poprzedniej pracy - "W imieniu Boga?". Yallop opisywał w niej kulisy pontyfikatu Jana Pawła I i stawiał szokującą tezę o jego zamordowaniu, którego tłem była afera tzw. banku Watykańskiego. Po wyborze nowego papieża sprawa ta została przez JPII zamieciona pod dywan. Arcybiskup Marcinkus odpowiedzialny za ten "bank" prał pieniądze mafii i był zaangażowany w liczne oszustwa finansowe. Karol Wojtyła zapewnił mu azyl w Watykanie, kiedy chciała go aresztować włoska policja. Choć znał zarzuty, znał dowody. Długo by o tym pisać, odsyłam do tamtej książki lub publikacji w Internecie (przydatne nazwiska to: Michele Sindona, Roberto Calvi, Lucio Gelli).

Yallop w tej książce kontynuuje te wątki w oparciu o nowe fakty ujawnione później. Dorzuca również garść innych afer, które papież pomagał zamiatać pod dywan (sprawa arcybiskupa Barcelony, którego uczyniono kardynałem i zamieszkał w Watykanie, aby uniknąć aresztowania i inne).

Jest tu oczywiście kwestia dekad molestowania dzieci przez kler, czy szokujące fakty o gwałceniu zakonnic i znowu - zamiatanie wszystkiego pod dywan. Yallop kończąc tę książkę w 2006 r. nie znał wszystkich, które znane są dziś. Nie wiedział, że inny przyjaciel papieża, kardynał Trujillo, walczący z homoseksualizmem i aborcją (czy antykoncepcją), sam urządzał orgie z klerykami.

Yallop analizuje również politykę Watykanu, którą przecież czynnie kształtował JPII. Również nie pozostawia na niej suchej nitki.

Autor jest bezlitosny i chyba czasami posuwa się za daleko w wyciąganych wnioskach. Jednak wnioski to jedno, fakty to co innego.

Na pewno Yallop nie zajmuje się analizą dorobku intelektualnego papieża, bo nie o tym jest ta książka. Tak samo jak nie zajmuje się jego świętością. Tu każdy może sam sobie odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy te fakty można oddzielić od człowieka, którego dotyczą i uznać go za świętego. W Polsce hipokryzja, takie "rozdwojenie jaźni" odnośnie papieża jest na porządku dziennym. Fakty są przemilczane albo zagłuszane fałszywą melodią graną od zawsze: atak na wiarę. Co to wszystko ma wspólnego z wiarą tego nie wie nikt.

Dopisać muszę, że na długiej liście świętych nie brakuje przecież tego typu wątpliwych osób. Zatem w przypadku papieża nie ma tu niczego nowego, czego w historii Kościoła katolickiego już by nie było. A i Jan Paweł II wbrew temu co pisze Yallop nie był pod tym względem jakimś wyróżniającym się przypadkiem. Póki katolikom to nie przeszkadza, póty zawsze będą robieni w konia. O Nowym Testamencie nie wspominam, ponieważ nim nie przejmuje się nikt, kiedy przychodzi do ukrywania niegodziwości kleru.

Polski tytuł tej książki to "Potęga i chwała. W mrocznym sercu Watykanu Jana Pawła II". Mimo ostrych ocen, rzecz warta uwagi. Jeśli ktoś lubi fakty, a nie sprzedawane bajki.

This book is primarily fueled by a hatred of the Catholic Church. Whenever an interpretation can be given it is deliberately skewed to put the Church in a bad light.
Any valid points which the author may have to make are, therefore,diluted and lost by his vitriol for his subject. It is unfortunate. He also demonstrates fundamental misunderstanding of the teachings of the Church and the structure by which it is governed.
Any institution which is run by people is, by definition, flawed. God, however, demonstrates his power by using our weaknesses.
Yallop deliberately skews his work to eliminate God from his equations and uses his skills as a writer to defame the Church.

Ensayo de investigación supuestamente sobre el pontificado de Juan Pablo II, en el que se mezclan informaciones relativas a diversos asuntos de la administración de la Sede Apostólica con aspectos relacionados con la disciplina del clero, temas relacionados con la misma fe de la Iglesia, y geopolítica, llenos de juicios de valor derivados de la posición inicial del autor.

Cuando lo lees te lleva a pedir por la Iglesia, para que no defraude los deseos de su divino fundador.

Es prescindible.

Cómo en el anterior libro "En Nombre de Dios" en esta entrega el autor presenta mucho contenido histórico muy interesante. Quizá el principal problema de esta entrega es que es algo redundante en ciertos tópicos pero no deja de ser una lectura atrayente para quién esté interesado en el tema.

Karol Wojtyla, who was to become known to the world as Pope John Paul II, is one of the most influential and even beloved figures of the 20th century, credited with speeding the demise of Eastern European and Soviet Communism and for speaking out for the human rights and dignity of the disenfranchised, the poor, and the powerless.

From the moment of his election to the papacy, Karol Wojtyla sought political influence and a role on the world stage. At the close of the twentieth and dawn of the twenty-first century, he was a leader to millions of Catholics at a time of tremendous social change and religious upheaval. Promising a renewed church, he was the first "media pope" and crossed the globe many times to preach his message. Wojtyla's blatent cover-up of pedophile priests and bishops, his policies promoting economic and social disparities, his suppression of the popular uprisings of the poor in Latin America, his ban on contraception which drove poverty and disease in third world countries and - what may have been Wojtyla's mortal sin - his clearly demonstrable knowledge of if not involvement in the conspiracy that led to the death of his predecessor - are all brought out of the silent, malarial fog that envelopes the inner workings of the Vatican.

David Yallop does not traffic in circumstantial "evidence" and hypothetical constructs of what may have happened or could have happened or probably did happen. He confines himself to demonstrable facts of probative value. `He ably documents the other half of Karol Wojtyla's career before and after his ascent to the Throne of Peter which has never been publicized.

There are uncounted `biographies' in print of Karol Wojtyla that are nothing apart from (more or less officially sanctioned) hagiographies that demonstrate only Wojtyla's `great' side. In fact, almost all of them embellish his sanctified image by relating accounts of events that never happened or sanitizing those that did in such a way as to make the man appear in a near-Divine light.

"The Power and the Glory: Inside the Dark Heart of Pope John Paul II's Vatican," properly balances Karol Wojtyla's world-changing achievements against his misjudgments (such as his obsessive silencing of critics) and his misdeeds (such as his glacial reaction to the clerical child abuse scandals at a time when he was obsessively concerned with the sexual practices of the laity).

At the end of the day, the objective reader is forced to ask himself this question: could the unfortunate events and processes that are described in detail in this work have transpired without Karol Wojtyla's knowledge, acquiescence and complicity? And the objective reader is forced to conclude, tragically, that the answer is 'no.'

When a sufficient time has elapsed so as to allow an unemotional, rationally objective assessment of the pontificate of John Paul II to take place, David Yallop will surely be seen not as an investigative journalist but as an historian, and this critical and invaluable book as a work of historic import.

David Yallop saca a la luz hechos hasta ahora mantenidos en silencio. Una devoción mariana sin límites, una obsesión por el tema del aborto y los anticonceptivos, el auge del Opus Dei, el sentimiento nacionalista polaco en los momentos del nacimiento del sindicato Solidaridad, se contraponen al desprecio por la Teología de la Liberación y sus seguidores, la inacción ante la pederastia entre los sacerdotes, el abandono a su suerte al arzobispo Romero, la falta de comprensión hacia problemas mundanos, el encubrimiento de los turbios manejos de las cuentas vaticanas.
El autor nos pasea por su infancia y juventud, los primeros años de sacerdote. Nos desmonta la idea de un papa que fue un cura y un obispo luchador anticomunista, cuando fue lo contrario. Dejó que los acontecimientos fueran pasando sin hacer nada -sólo la oración- lo que hizo suponer a los comunistas que era poco combativo frente a ellos. Y así fue como dejaron que ascendiera, no pusieron trabas a sus sucesivos nombramientos. 
Las masas que se reunían ante él en sus carísimos viajes, luego no practicaban lo que Juan Pablo les pedía. Tal como indica el libro, les gustaba el cantante pero no la canción.

Has a dislike of trad catholic’s & John Paul 2 unless you are craving women priests and think tradition means little this book is for you.i would say pass .
