351p James is trying to understand how he ended up here: in a prison hospital facing the the death penalty. He never had anyone he could count on before, anyone who was completely on his side ...until he met Rachel.
Known as a pitbull in the courtroom and coming home to her two bunnies at night, attorney Rachel Breeze thought she knew all about prison life, bad people go to jail, their families visit, when their time is up, they are set free. But are they really ever again free? After spending time with James she seriously begins to doubt it.
Taking his case leads her to a world she never wanted to visit. The darkness of that world and the strong undeniable connection she has with James stirs up memories and feelings in herself that she has been denying for years.
Can Rachel neutralize the vicious publicly accepted treatment of a brutal system? Can she break through the veil of despair that encompasses her client and threatens his life?

Follow Rachel as she transforms from a skeptic to a believer, learns to embrace the victim within and remember that sometimes lost causes are the only ones left worth fighting for.

First a warning: This is a story about prison related, complex PTSD; the trauma involving years of rape and beatings. While the subject is handled with dignity and compassion there are parts that can definitely be triggering, and even a couple of "as-it-happens" scenes.

That said, this book is absolutely excellent. There are a few typos and the wording is a little formal, but really it's so well written that you don't notice it after awhile. The characters are very relatable, maybe too much, and you come to care very much about them. The way the author handles the subject is well done also.

Even if you've had issues with prison and/or rape related trauma I would still recommend this book (though only you can decide what you're able to face). I'm having trouble coming up with the words to explain why, but this story really shows that you're not alone. Most of it is told from the lawyer's point of view, but there are flash-back scenes and passages in the client's POV. If you don't know what it's like then read, and understand.

This is a profoundly touching story.

Need MORE ABOUT RACHEL and JAMES

Thank you for a book of hope and a way to turn to the light.
I have met men like JAMES , who have experienced these issues. With people who care and give them HOPE some are finally getting therapy to aid in recovery from these traumatic experiences.
