Return to Sugarcreek with bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray for a heartwarming story of second chances with a young Amish couple

Randall Beiler will sacrifice anything to take care of his younger siblings and the family farm, even if it means forsaking love. But when his brother offers pretty Elizabeth Nolt a job cleaning and cooking for the family, Randall is furious—and feels guilty about the way he once broke Elizabeth's heart. Then he learns that Elizabeth and her grandmother are struggling to make ends meet and he knows the offer, no matter how painful, is the right thing for everyone.

Elizabeth wants to refuse but she needs the work. Though she vows to protect her heart, spending time in the Beiler household makes Elizabeth realize that her love for Randall still burns strong. And though Randall keeps his distance at first, time and teamwork reveal that something deeper still connects them.

Elizabeth isn't sure what to think: Does Randall want her because he truly loves her, or because he needs a housekeeper? And if his feelings have changed for sure, Randall must find a way to show Elizabeth what she really means to him or risk losing his partner in life and love forever.

Get settled in your favorite reading spot with Joyful, the third book in the Return to Sugarcreek series by Shelley Shephard Gray.

I've always known what a gifted author Shelley is, but she has written a beautiful and touching story about the Beiler family, the Grabers and other beloved characters that we've met at The Sugarcreek Inn.
Her unique character development and attention to detail is incredible and draws you in from the first page.

This author has the ability to make you feel the emotions her characters are feeling. I laughed with them, cried with them and even celebrated with them. I think that everyone who reads this book will do the same.

This is one book you will not be able to put down. It really is that good!!!

In this third book of The RETURN TO SUGARCREEK series we are taken back to the Beiler family, raising themselves and caring for the family farm since the death of their parents; Elizabeth Nolt whose mother moved to Pennsylvania with her new husband leaving Elizabeth and her grandmother alone; and Ben and Judith Knox and their foster baby James whose birth mother Kendra is in prison, is later diagnosed with cancer and dies there.

You can’t help but feel a part of the ups and downs of Randall and Elizabeth’s relationship. You’ll feel frustration towards Randall and sadness for Elizabeth. One of Randall’s brothers devises a plan to help Elizabeth out financially and possibly help Randall and Elizabeth’s relationship.

You’ll also feel anxious and sad right along with Judith at the very real possibility of losing James with the death of his birth mother. Ben handles the situation better than Judith does but it also saddens him and would break his heart too. Will one of Kendra’s sisters take James away?

You’ll have to read this wonderfully written book by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray to find out what happens in the lives of these characters. Will you feel JOYFUL at the end?

Once again Shelley has written a book you can’t put down! Thank you Shelley for another five star read! I always look forward to your next book!!!

Another great hit by Shelley Shepard Gray. This book is a page turner and heart stirring. The importance of family, and trust in God are important themes in this book. I must admit there were times I wanted to knock some sense into one of the characters, but in the end he straightened out without my interference. I do love a book where I become invested in the characters. The book has its very tender and tear jerker moments which is a good thing. Thank you, Shelley, for another great book.

I just finished the third book in Joyful: Return to Sugarcreek, Book Three, I loved the book, but didn’t want the series to end.
This is the story of Elizabeth Nolt and Randall Beiler, and how he breaks her heart. I felt he was really tactless in how he handled the breakup. He sure didn’t seem to have his head screwed on right, as he wasn’t at all thinking, especially seeing what his other members had done previously.
We also have Judith and Ben, who are still caring for little James, and growing in their love for him. Will their hearts be broken, will Kendra change her mind and let her sister’s raise her baby.
Then there is Pippa who is enjoying managing the restaurant, but after her divorce, skeptical about having a relationship with Bud. Can she overcome her disappointments and begin to accept Bud’s attention?
Through all of these relationships you see people struggling with using their own will and not listening to God. When they begin to yield to God, things don’t always happen the way they want, but it is the way it should be.
How I enjoyed this great read, and will miss these people that I have come to love, and be involved in their lives. Made me want to move to Sugarcreek, and in particular live among the Amish. I can’t wait for the new series to start! Thank you Shelly Shephard Gray!

I received this book through Edelwiss and the Publisher Harper Collins, and was not required to give a positive review.

JOYFUL is the third book in the Return to Sugarcreek series by Ms. Gray. Readers will want to read the first two books in the series: Hopeful and Thankful as these stories don't stand alone. There are three different stories included in this book, but the one between Randall and Elizabeth is the main story.

I enjoyed reading the story, finding out what is happening at the restaurant that was key in previous series, as well as other characters such as Ben and Judith. I also thought Elizabeth and her grandmother were very sweet, kind, and forgiving individuals. I loved Randal's sixteen year old brother, and his little sister, Kay. But Randall was a class A jerk. If I were Elizabeth I wouldn't have been quite so forgiving of his horrible treatment of her, and it certainly wouldn't have made me fall in love with him.

Ms. Gray's Amish stories are sweet, enjoyable, though a little flat, and not three-dimensional. And as I said, I didn't care for Randall. Other than that, great story.

For those of us that have come to love and call Sugarcreek our home away from home, best-selling author Shelley Shepard Gray, takes us back in her latest novel Joyful, the third book in the Return to Sugarcreek Series. This has definitely been one of my favorites because I feel like I have come to know each of the couples we deal with in this novel, like they're close family friends. I've had the opportunity to get to know them and the struggles they have had up to the point we are reunited with them once again. For me, it's like having a really great television series, that you have to wait for each next episode to air so you can come back again and again to a place you'd love to be a part of.

Randall Beiler and Elizabeth Holt have been seeing one another for the last two years, and Elizabeth is just waiting for the day when he will finally ask her to marry him and join the large Beiler family. Just when she believes that day is finally here, Randall gives her news she wasn't quite expecting. He tells her that he needs to spend more time taking care of his family, now that his older brothers and sisters have gotten married and moved on. Still taking on role of caretaker, mother and father, and older brother leaves him at a disadvantage with the house failing into a state of needing constant cleaning, someone to do all the cooking, and helping to raise nine-year-old Kaylene who feels being left at home with four older brothers is beyond what she can take. So Randall's solution is to call things off with Elizabeth.

Now heartbroken, Elizabeth struggles to figure out a way to help pay her bills taking care of her grandmother since her mother has moved away to begin her own life. She had originally planned to send money, but each month is seems like she is sending less and less, leaving Elizabeth with no choice but to find a way to supplement their income while still caring for her ailing grandmother who needs constant care. She had hoped that being married to Randall would solve things for them, knowing he could support not only them, but allowing her grandmother to move in with them, but that is not going to happen anytime soon. But will one unskilled bachelor be able to handle taking care of a house, cooking, cleaning and raising his siblings without any help, or will Randall realize he has simply bitten off more than he can chew?

I received Joyful by Shelly Shepard Gray compliments of Avon Inspire, a division of Harper Collins Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. I absolutely LOVED where Shelley took her characters in this novel. As the title suggests, each of them will be forced into a situation in which they will have to find the joy in life once again, instead of dwelling on worries and things beyond our control at times. Too often we find ourselves taking on more stress and worry wondering what will happen, instead of simply enjoying what we have right in front of us, that we miss the joyful moments, of learning what it means to care for those we love, to help out our friends and family when they need it the most, and learn to appreciate what we have instead of wanting more that may never come. It causes the reader to reflect on those joyful moments in their own life, they may be missing simply worrying about tomorrow instead of enjoying today and one that I believe can cause us to change how we view our lives and see more joy instead of worry. I easily give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars. A reader's discussion guide is included as well as a sneak peek into Shelley's next novel Snowfall.

My Review

This is the 3rd book in the Series “Return to Sugarcreek” by Shelley Shepard Gray, who is one of the best authors who write Amish books, which I thoroughly love.

This book starts out as Randall Beiler comes to see Elizabeth Nolt, who he has been dating for a while. Elizabeth thinks that he is coming to propose marriage to her, but he tells her something else entirely. He wants to break up with her for a while and in the meantime he has hurt Elizabeth a lot.

As the story goes and Elizabeth is trying to get over Randall, one of Randall’s brothers comes to her house and asks her if she would come and work for them, since it is all brothers and a sister, Kaylene. She decides to accept this and goes to work for them to cook, clean, etc. It is a very difficult thing for Elizabeth to do, but she keeps on doing it. Then, in the meantime, she has to face Randall every time she is there to work and those old feelings keep on rising up for both of them (Elizabeth and Randall). They fight and Randall even makes Elizabeth mad and he has to go and apologize.

Then, Randall falls at the construction site where he works and the whole family wants Elizabeth to come to stay all night for several nights to help out the family during the time that Randall is laid up in bed. He has a broken leg, and you know how men can be, UGH!!!!! But, during this time, Elizabeth realizes her feelings for Randall are still there.

I won’t say anything more about this book or I will spoil it for you. It is a GREAT book, I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s books, they are wonderful. You really need to read this book especially if you read the previous ones in this series.

I hope that you will pickup this book soon and read it. I would definitely suggest this book to my family and friends. Thank you Shelley for giving us Amish Fiction readers a GREAT book.

My Review:

All was right in Elizabeth Nolt's life, the man of her dreams was about to propose---any day or so she thought. It was strange to see Randall Beiler, her love in such a determined mood. She thought to herself, this is the day he will do it, the moment she longed for. She had waited so long, two years in fact for this moment. But soon after Randall sat Elizabeth down and then started to explain, she soon realized he wasn't there to propose. He broke off their relationship, Elizabeth was crushed, but what she didn't consider was that Randall was too.

It wasn't long until all the changes in the Beiler household caused a few of them to cry out for help. And that help came in the way of Elizabeth Nolt. Elizabeth started working at Randall's home to help with the cooking, cleaning and with his youngest sister Kaylene. She thought she had control of her feelings enough to manage sparse contact with Randall. But to her dismay her feelings are very out of control and Randall seems to be having the same trouble as well.

Joyful, number 3 in the Return to Sugarcreek series is definitely my favorite! The dynamic between Elizabeth and Randall is engaging and perfect. They are definitely at a crossroads.

It was a rainy day yesterday and I picked up three different books in hopes for an escape, and struck out. So I turned to Shelley Shepard Gray...bingo! Once again, her Return to Sugar Creek series was the ticket to a clean, sweet diversion. The third installment picks up three different story lines and follows the theme of second chances, tender mercies from a loving God. There's the couple who has broken up, the young couple who has miscarried and is looking to adopt, and a divorced restaurant owner who is afraid to trust again. At firs, I was hesitant to have so much going on at one time and I found myself drawn to the story of Elizabeth and Randall. I wasn't quite as engaged in the other two stories, until the very end, when I was surprised to find I was in tears at the sweet story of a foster baby finding a home.

Shelley Shepard Gray wraps things up in a neat tidy package. She writes feel good novels with faith intertwined. If you are looking for a simple plot with predictable resolution you will be pleased. One finds themselves transported to a community where horse drawn buggies are still used, homemade sugar cookies are cut out with the top of a glass. Yet, modernization is afoot and modern characters are woven in quite nicely. I love the Amish charm and the goodness that emanates from their lives. Recommend this series for a Fall rainy day read! There's study questions in the book and a sneak peek to book four...going online to pre-order!

The third novel in Return to Sugarcreek, Shelley Shepard Gray’s Joyful is an enjoyable, heartfelt read. Though I have not yet read the previous two books in the series (Hopeful and Thankful), I immediately connected with the characters and invested in their story without feel like I missed too much by not knowing the complete histories of the town. As Joyful follows the stories of three couples (but primarily Randall Beiler and Elizabeth Nolt), Gray tells a story of second chances and finding joy, love and contentment. It’s a sweet, encouraging story as each couple experiences important, understandable growth, and I continually hoped each couple would make the most of their second chance. I think fans of Return to Sugarcreek will enjoy this novel even more than I did, so I recommend it. I look forward to reading more from Shelley Shepard Gray in the future.

Thanks to LitFuse Publicity Group, I received a copy of Joyful and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own. To read other opinion, be sure to check out what other reviewers think here.

Set aside plenty of time to read Joyful. Once you start reading you won't want to stop until you've reached the end! This, the third and final book in the Return to Sugarcreek series, is a fast paced read that will keep you interested from beginning to end.

I immediately liked the characters from page one. They were so well-written that I felt as if I had known them forever. I especially liked Elizabeth and wanted her to have a happy ending to her story. I liked Randall too even though at times I thought he needed a good shaking. The problems they had weren't just limited to the Amish but could very well be had by any couple, no matter their faith. I must admit I like Amish fiction where they have the same problems and issues as the English. I like seeing how they handle the situations compared to us.

I couldn't read this book fast enough as I wanted to know how it ended. The book was easy to stay interested in and soon I found myself at the end of the story. I will miss the people of Sugarcreek and hope there will be a chance to visit them again in the future. I recommend this book to lovers of Amish fiction or anyone looking for a nice sweet, clean romance.

Shelley Shepard Gray has done it again, written another heartfelt Amish romance. When Randall Beiler breaks up with Elizabeth Nolt to take care of his younger siblings, Elizabeth is devastated because she has also lost her father and her mother remarried and moved away. She now cares for and supports her grandmother. When Randall's brother asks Elizabeth to be their housekeeper, she is not sure she can be that close to Randall again, but she needs the money. Shelley is a master at describing the truly human emotions both Randall and Elizabeth deal with before coming to terms with this arrangement, I could really feel the pain of both of them. Then there is Judith and Ben Graber who are fostering a little black baby, James. Again, we struggle with their emotions as they fear him being taken away by his aunts when his mother passes. And then there is Pippa's blossoming romance, so there are 3 sub-plots switching back and forth, keeping the reader totally engrossed. Another great addition to the Sugarcreek series, I feel like I know these people personally. Keep them coming, Shelley.

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Shelley Shepard Gray and her books. Each book that she writes delivers exactly what I hoped for and, and in some cases, didn't even know I wanted. She has the beautiful gift of making you feel like you are right there, in Sugarcreek, with all of these unbelivable and terrific characters.
Joyful is no different. This is the third and final book in the series, and you guessed it; I loved it. I loved the premise of this book, I fell in love with the character of Elizabeth. What a patient and humble person! Randall is the character that makes you want to shake your head and just "wake him up" and help him realize the error of his ways faster. Your heart aches for Judith and Ben, and all the while I am reading their stories I can picture it all in my mind with the vivid descriptions and beautiful way the stories are told.
You need to take the time and pick up this Return to Sugarcreek series. You will be grateful to me that you did, and might even leave a comment thanking me. :)
What a pleasure to be the reader of one of Shelley's books.

This is the third book in the Sugarcreek Series, not having read the first two, I thought it was a good read, but not my cup of tea. Would I recommend it? No! Not unless you have read the first two. Honestly, I felt like this book was really confusing. The book starts with Elizabeth and Randall who have a broken relationship, but within time Randall has to show Elizabeth how he feels. Meanwhile, there are a series of other side stories going on in this books going with other characters. Pippa is an interesting character that has a side story, that isn't like an Amish book I have read before and I'm not sure I really enjoyed it. Then, every couple chapters we would get back to the main characters of Elizabeth and Randall. I just felt like this book was all over the place, was hard to follow and I would have benefited from reading the other two books. If you're going to read this book, I think maybe read the other two first, or don't waste your time. It is not a book that can be read as a stand alone. Just not a fan on this one..

Review of “Joyful” By: Shelley Shepard Gray
This book is a breath of fresh air. It is such
a joy to read Joyful. Excellent story, good clean
Christian fiction. I love the Amish faith, devotion
to family and friends.
This is the story of Randall Beiler who is dedicated …
to caring for his younger siblings since he is the oldest at home.
He feels it is his responsibility to care for them and the
family farm.
Elizabeth Nolt lives with her grandmother. Trying to take care of
her the best that she can. With what little they have. Elizabeth
thought she was destined to marry Randall Beiler until he
ends things suddenly. Elizabeth is crushed.
Elizabeth is offered a job cooking and cleaning for Randall’s family.
She is torn but decides to accept the job. It is a way to help
support her and her grandmother.
Are Randall and Elizabeth meant to be together?
You must read to find out.

Joyful is the third book in Shelley Shepard Gray's beloved Return to Sugarcreek series. From page one you will be caught up into a beautifully woven story with the Beilers, Nolts, Grabers, and the new owner of The Sugarcreek Inn. You can't help but feel what her characters are feeling, through their struggles of growing and trusting in God's will, through their tears as both heartache and happiness filter through their lives, and realizing just how strong a family can be in times of trial. I also realized as I read this heartfelt story that there are times when you can catch glimpses of your own life within the pages. Joyful was like that for me. I definitely recommend this book! Be forewarned though you might need some tissues with this one. Thank you Shelley Shepard Gray for sharing your beautiful stories with us.

Shelley Shepard Gray hits another homerun out of the ballpark with Joyful. After just reading the first few pages, I felt like I was back sitting around the kitchen table with the Beilers and Grabers, sharing their sorrows and joys, and also slapping Randall upside his head a few different times. Shelley's writing makes you feel like part of the family. You feel everything they go thru like you are one of them. You know by the end of this book that the title is spot on. Through all the hurt and turmoil, in the end, God brings everyone the JOY they need. Believe me, once you start reading, you won't want to put this story down. So find yourself a cozy little corner to curl up in with Joyful and enjoy.

Joyful by Shelley Shepard Gray was a great book. This is the third book in the series and I have read the other two as well so I was so glad that I could review this one so I could stay caught up with the characters I have fallen in love with. One thing I loved about this series that she checks in with other characters even though the story isn't about them. In fact my two favorite characters aren't actually main characters in any of the books. I loved the characters in this book because they seemed so real. This book was amazing and I am sad that it is the last book in the series because I would love to keep following these characters and see where they all end up.

So many times the path of our lives takes us down roads we would not have chosen to walk. We may not consciously be objecting to what is happening, and indeed may truthfully be saying, "Thy Will, Lord" but unintentionally may be harboring resentment, mistrust or fear.
"Joyful" takes us down these paths with our dear characters. Shelley Shepard Gray has continued the story of some of our favorites from Sugar Creek. It's a beautiful story of forgiveness, second chances and most importantly, joy in the journeys we are on.

As we return to Sugarcreek and the Beiler family, the family is growing up and feeling those pains. In this book, Shelley, brings to life what every family goes through during changes; Amish or not. Be prepared, as a reader to; smile at seeing old friends, overcome as you think "this could be me" and Joyful to see how faith truly makes a difference.

Return to Sugarcreek #3
preceded by Seasons of Sugarcreek series

Genre: Christian Fiction - Amish Fiction; Historical Fiction, Romance - Christian, Amish, Contemporary; Inspirational

Featuring: Sugarcreek, Ohio, Orphans, Restaurant, Adoption, Fostering, Incarceration, Cancer, Family Dynamics, Multiple POVs, Housekeeping, Discussion Questions, Book Preview Snowfall 6 pages

Rating as a movie: PG

My rating: ⭐⭐¾

My thoughts: Page 14 - I'm not following this guy's line of thinking at all.
Page 63 - [late at night incoherent note] basically Captain Obvious in reference ference to Randall and I don't understand how this is the actual plot of the story.
Page 130 - These storylines are ridiculous.
Page 212 - 🙄 I'll have to come back to this later.

Joyful is the final book in the Return to Sugarcreek series, which is a sequel series to Seasons of Sugarcreek. I didn't enjoy the story. The plot was weak and there were many inconsistencies from both series. There were children who were older since the last book, those who were younger in this book than they were in the first Seasons of Sugarcreek book, Winter's Awakening, thise who have gone missing, and issues with lifestyle. There was a mention of a washing machine but later it seemed like they were washing by hand.

The main plot was fluff for sure. Elizabeth's mother has remarried and moved away, leaving Elizabeth to care for her aging grandmother. Her mother was supposed to sent money for bills each month but the payments have dwindled to nothing. Elizabeth isn't worried because for that last 2 years she's been dating Randall Beiler, who although orphaned 5 years ago is part of one of the richest Amish families in town. She is looking forward to marriage for financial security. Randall shows up but instead of proposing he dumps her. His reasoning is 3 of his older siblings have gotten hitched and moved out with spouses in the last 3 months. So, instead of marrying his long time girlfriend and having her take over his family's household duties as his wife, he reduces his work hours to 2 days a week and takes over cooking, cleaning, and farming. He can no longer court her as he needs to take care of his 16 and 14 year old brothers and 9 year old sister, like his older brother did 5 years ago. I have never heard of a sillier reason to dump someone. It gets worse after a week of horrible food his brothers hire Elizabeth to be their cook and maid. The other 2 storylines follow Judith and Ben, and Pippa. Judith's storyline was typical, Pippa's was a stretch and since it's thin I can't say much about it without giving away the entire story. I love Shelley Shepard Gray and was excited to read that she loves Robyn Carr but this book felt like she was phoning it in.

Recommend to others?: In general no, to finish the series only.

This is the last book in the series, and the story centers around the Beiler family (the large orphaned family of Junior, who married Miriam). Randall Beiler has been courting Elizabeth Nolt for 2 years, but suddenly breaks off their relationship because he needs to take on the responsibility of caring for his family after his married siblings move out on their own. Being the oldest, he feels he should put his life on hold for a while in order to take over where his brother Junior left off. Elizabeth is heartbroken. She is also caring for her family - her grandmother - since her widowed mom remarried and moved to Lancaster. Her mother was sending money, but that has stopped. She feels she needs to do more to bring in some money to pay the bills. Meanwhile, Randall is failing at cooking and running the household, and his siblings are at their wits' ends. His younger brother Levi decides to offer Elizabeth a job cooking and cleaning - to bring order and much-needed good cooking to the household. Elizabeth is distraught but needs the money so much she accepts. Randall is furious when he finds out, but his opinion is overturned. Their awkward relationship status is making things quite uncomfortable for both of them. Yet, after a major accident occurs, both Randall and Elizabeth are forced to face the truth about their futures.

Very good story about responsibility, commitment, and family.

Another good story by Shelley Shepard Gray, where Randall Beiler is feeling the pressure of taking care of his brothers and small sister all by himself aftter tthe older children have left home to beging heir own homes and spouses. He is so stressed out that he decided to break up with his future wife and spend all his time raising his siblingings. What a misake, and how sad for his girlfriend.

And there is also anoher family in Sugarcreek that is also in dispair, and how God changes both families. You just need faith.

In this book, we learn more about Ben and Judith, who are fostering James, and hoping to adopt him. We are also introduced to Randall Beiler, younger brother of Junior, and his girl, Elizabeth. We also get to know Pippa, the Mexican woman who is taking over the restaurant in Sugarcreek.

It is a nice Amish romance story. I enjoyed the first book in this series the most.

I just finished the third book in the Return to Sugarcreed Series. I must say i really enjoyed reading about the Beiler family. I also really enjoyed the storyline about Judith and Ben and their struggle to have a child of their own. A story about family and how they stick together and have each others backs. I was so happy on how this one ended. I wish she would write a 4th part to this series.

Another wonderful read!

What a wonderful conclusion to the Return to Sugarcreek series.

I do have to admit though, Randall was my least favorite character. Elizabeth has her hands full with him. He can be a little stuck in his own head.

SSG does a wonderful job showing us the importance of family whether it is blood family or the one we make on our own. We all need family to lean on from time to time.
