Sysml Distilled: A Brief Guide to the Systems Modeling Language

Rate this book
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) extends UML with powerful systems engineering capabilities for modeling a wider spectrum of systems, effectively capturing all aspects of a system's design. SysML Distilled is the first clear, concise guide for everyone who wants to start creating useful SysML models.Drawing on his pioneering experience at Lockheed Martin and NASA, Lenny Delligatti illuminates SysML's core components, showing how to use them even under tight deadlines and other constraints. Dellgatti begins with an easy-to-understand overview of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and an explanation of how SysML applies its concepts to improve system specification, analysis, design, optimization, and verification. Next, he shows how to use all nine types of SysML diagrams, even if you have no previous experience with modeling languages. A case study running through the text demonstrates the use of SysML in modeling a complex, real-world sociotechnical system.Modeled after Martin Fowler's classic "UML Distilled," Delligatti's indispensable guide quickly teaches what you need to know to get started and helps you deepen your knowledge incrementally as the need arises. Like SysML itself, the book is method independent and is designed to support whatever processes, procedures, and tools you already use.Coverage includes Why SysML was created, how it extends and improves UML, and the business case for using itQuickly putting SysML to practical useWhat to know before you start a SysML modeling projectEssential concepts that apply to all SysML diagramsSysML diagram elements and relationshipsDiagramming block definitions, internal blocks, use cases, activities, sequences, state machines, parametrics, requirements, and packagesUsing allocations to define relationships that cut across many types of SysML diagramsComplete SysML notation, version changes, and sources for more information

This book is a great primer for the SysML language and a handy desk reference. I would highly recommend this book for anyone new to SysML or studying for the OMG SysML exams. I enjoyed the system example that is used throughout the book.

I read this book for work and it was super helpful theory wise but was hard to conceptualize the applications for things I hadn’t encountered previously

Concise with good coverage. Exposition could be clearer as they often start explaining things before defining or motivating them.
