A jilted bride desperate to save her family from ruin. A bounty hunter seeking vengeance for a ravaged past. An arduous trek toward justice—or redemption.
Silver Matlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad idea. Bad for Silver’s already tarnished reputation in her small Colorado town. Bad for bounty hunter Jared’s secret, single-minded mission for revenge. But Silver is determined to track down the rogue who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s fortune. And Jared’s in a hurry to hunt down the murderer who destroyed his family—even if Silver is too distractingly beautiful for comfort.
The pair takes off over mountain and desert, past bleak homesteads and raw mining towns, hot on the trail of the two villains who took what wasn’t theirs to take. Soon supplies dwindle, secrets emerge, and suspicion leave Silver and Jared at odds when they need each other most. To confront an enemy deadlier than desert rattlesnakes and rocky cliffs, Silver and Jared must learn to forgive and trust and face the question they haven’t dared voice: What happens next?

Thanks to Andrea Cox's review, I decided to bump this up a bit on my to-read list and checked out the scope from the library. It took me all of two days to read it, and I truly enjoyed each minute. I like that it breaks the predictable in a number of ways, with surprising twists that keep you wondering and worrying. A delightful, clean Western.
The romance is authentic, but also not way touchy-feely, which I loved. Jared always treats Silver with the respect a lady deserves, even though she is not acting in the way a proper lady would (traipsing cross country alone with him.) They exemplify good moral values.
My only gripes: one, that the ending seemed a bit hasty; two, only one real mention of God/Christianity in a Christian novel.
This was my second novel by Robin Lee Hatcher. The other novel was A Promise Kept and very different from The Heart's Pursuit. I look forward to reading others from the clearly versatile Robin Lee Hatcher.
"Can't any of us undo our past." ~The Heart's Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher
When a jilted bride hires a bounty hunter to help her track down her thieving former fiance, trouble's bound to be hot on their heels. What she doesn't know is that the bounty hunter has some unfinished business that could upstage her plans. Will their adventures turn into a clash of wills?
The Heart's Pursuit might be my first Robin Lee Hatcher book, but it most definitely will not be my last. She has a fresh, entertaining writer's voice, and the details of the story were shared in a way that kept the pace quick, which I really appreciate. And her characters! They could have stepped from the pages of a history book, they seemed so realistic. Flawed people seeking a better life... and finding joy through the trials they face... What a beautiful reflection of reality.
A young woman jilted at the alter after having her family's fortune stolen by her now ex fiancee and desperate to right the wrong, a murderer on the loose, who no one can identify except by a scar, and a bounty hunter on the hunt for revenge. It sounds like a premises to a thrilling new movie, but it is not, it is Robin Lee Hatcher's new book!
The Heart's Pursuit was a fast pace adventure that took place through several different states as Silver Matlock and Jared Newman, each pursued their own form of retribution to past crimes against them, not knowing what lies ahead for their future. In their travels Silver and Jared face many obstacles that they had to figure out to overcome. Dealing with either personal, past, and physical injuries. Each obstacle offered a learning moment for the characters that allowed the reader deeper into their lives.
This story is a little different than previous books I've read by Robin Lee Hatcher, and that isn't a bad thing at all! This was a thrilling tale of of finding a path to forgiveness and healing for both of these characters, all set in the back drop of the wonderful wild west. How can you go wrong with the gorgeousness of the western frontier...you can't!
I won this book from the GoodReads First Read giveaway, all opinions are my own, I was not required to post a positive review.
Silver is desperate. Her fiancee just left her at the alter after stealing her families jewels and money. They will loose their home and business. Her desperation becomes inspiration when she hires a bounty hunter by the name of Jared.
This book was a match of wit and skill. Jared doesn't want a traveling companion but is unsure how to convince Silver to remain behind. He is a man of honor and keeps his word, not matter the amount of inconvenience.
This book was interesting from start to finish. I loved the pacing and the placing of important events. I enjoyed how Silver and Jared came to understand and trust each other. The road to love and romance was slow because neither was looking for someone to love. It just happened as an evolution of the characters.
The book has mystery, suspense, evil characters, revenge, gambling, danger, and murder. It shows the trauma left to those who suffer from the tragedy of a relative who has been murdered. It depicts the hard life of living and traveling in the Old West and what it may have been like to live travelling by horse.
This is a clean romance with violence and kissing.
This book had an intriguing premise. Basically, a jilted woman hires a bounty hunter to track down her thieving ex-groom and decides to tag along.
While the story was okay, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.
There were a lot of coincidences in the plot (like the MCs being in the right place at the right time or just happening to bump into the right person). One or two instances would have been fine, but it kept happening.
Jared and Silver were likable, sympathetic characters. However, I think their romance could have been fleshed out a lot more. There were chapters of them getting to know each other and caring for one another. But those moments didn't really come across as a blossoming romance to me, more like small talk, common courtesy, and basic kindness. When other characters would say that Jared and Silver were clearly in love, it felt like it came out of nowhere.
Content Notes: saloons and saloon girls, some very mild innuendo, mention of alcohol, mention of gambling, mention of “harlots,” a man is called a “handsome devil,” mention of a woman being beaten, mention of murder, implication that a woman was sexually assaulted, mention of swimming naked as a child, noticing and awareness, touching, kissing, blood, some mild violence (nothing overly graphic), a man is shirtless, mentions of a man cursing (none specified), guns and mention of people getting shot, description of a dying man (not overly graphic), a woman is described as “buxom,” a woman is mistakenly assumed to be an unwed mother, mention of undergarments, mention of abuse and prostitution, mention that a man’s tongue was cut out
I enjoyed The Heart's Pursuit. The "bounty hunter" aspect of the plot was unusual and something that I'd never read before. The story was very readable and there was enough action to keep me turning the pages. There was nothing wrong with this book. It's just that I came away from it feeling slightly disappointed. I guess my main issue was that I just wanted more. The book is pretty short (around 300 pages) and the font seemed a little large. I wanted things to be fleshed out more. More excitement and romance and time devoted to the characters. We get to learn the basic back story of both Silver and Jared, but I still felt like I didn't know them at all. The dialogue between the main characters and their inner thoughts were too brief and generic. The two of them are alone on a journey for the majority of the book, and that sounds like the perfect opportunity for us to get to know them really well...but unfortunately that didn't happen for me. Also, certain aspects of the plot were very predictable and I thought the characters should have figured out things more quickly than they did. And while there's lots of action in parts of the story, one of the most important scenes in the book felt very anticlimactic.
Like I said, I did enjoy this book. It just felt much too short and lacking in the details that make a story unforgettable.

I really enjoyed reading The Heart's Pursuit. I always like a little adventure in a love story. It was easy to read. I gave it 4 stars because I thought it was a tad predictable and although the characters were great, there was not a lot of depth to them. I defiantly look forward to reading Mrs. Hatcher's future books!
Silver Matlock jilted at the alter vows to redeem the money & jewelry stolen by her X fiance. Silver hires a bounty hunter. Jared Newman became a bounty hunter when his family was murdered. He has been hunting the man who committed the crime.
Robin Lee Hatcher has always been a favorite Christian author of mine. This book was different from the others.
I initially bought this book for its beautiful cover and when our holiday vacation rolled around this past Christmas, I tossed it in my book bag. The story inside turned out to be a lovely, sweet romance with no open door intimacy. It brought with it a desperate heroine, who would do anything to save her family's property from being seized by the bank, including take matters into her own hands to track down her fiance who stole everything from them and abandoned her at the altar, though I felt a tad frustrated with the heroine for feeling so much guilt over the matter--after all, it was the fiance who had duped her entire family, but for the time period, it worked for her to feel guilty for being such a poor judge of his character. I love the idea of a roughened hero, who learns that he loved the heroine when he'd thought himself impervious to affection, and this story had that. At times, I felt as if the suspense wasn't as intense as it could have been due to slower pacing, but overall, I enjoyed this gentle read.
I needed to read a romantic western like I needed to breathe air, and this was exactly what I was looking for 🥳 A bit cheesy, and I think I would’ve liked it even more if it leaned more into the grit of a true western (I understand this is a romance first and foremost though), but I had a good time! Lots of fun characters and adventure, and a cute romance 🤠
This is a very good western novel; it’s a departure from Ms Hatcher’s usual style, but it’s quite good. You’ll spend many days on the trail with Silver and the bounty hunter, Jared, as they pursue the man responsible for the murder of Jared’s family. But there are interesting respites along the way. And you will fall in love with the two main characters to boot!
I loved this story. Silver’s stubborn grit was more than a match for Jared. Their long, dangerous journey was packed with emotion. Well worth the read.
Resolving in her mind that she will undoubtedly grow old as a spinster, never being the married wife and having children like her stepsister, Rose. So it should have come as no surprise to her when Bob Cassidy rode into town and quite literally swept her off her feet, that warning signs were going off in her head. Leaving her standing alone at the altar was bad enough of an embarrassment for Silver Matlock, but Bob also robbed her father's store with the last mortgage payment. Without that money, they would lose not only the Mercantile but also their family home. Even selling her grandmother's gold and diamond locket wouldn't be enough to hold off the bank collecting on the debt now looming within 90 days. But sometimes you have to take a chance when things look the darkest.
Silver would find someone to locate Bob Cassidy before he had the opportunity to sell off her family's jewelry and the cash he had stolen from the store's safe. She knew she had just enough money to find someone willing to take the time to find the man she knew could save her family if he could be found in the next 90 days. Jared Newman has been holding out his own personal revenge in finding the man who murdered his entire family leaving him not only an orphan but with his own personal need to find the man responsible. His only clue was a crescent shaped scar on the man's neck and in the last six years, Jared has been as lucky as he had hoped as a bounty hunter.
With all his money tied up in pending rewards, Silver's claim might just be the ticket in locating two men at the same time, seeing as they both seemed to be headed west. Only the last thing he imagined he'd be agreeing to when he decided to take her case, was taking her along for the ride. Her family has sent her away due to the rumors circulating in the small Colorado town of Twin Springs, especially with her taking the initiative to hire a bounty hunter to find her father's money before they were destitute and without a home seeing as they were the wealthiest family in town. Silver finds that accompanying Jared might be the only way he can find Bob with nothing more to go on than a faded picture and the description of just about every man in town. It will take more than luck for them to find him before time runs out.
I received The Heart's Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher compliments Zondervan Publishing and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. Robin Lee Hatcher has been one of my favorite Christian Western authors and every time I see her name on a request, I immediately agree to review them even before I know what they are going to be about. They are simply that good! I love her attention to detail from the wording she uses on her character's dialogue to the detailed descriptions of the towns her characters ride in to. I love strong female characters that aren't afraid to take on whatever responsibilities life tosses their way and such is the case of Silver Matlock. While she is afraid of the unknown, she is willing to take chances most women wouldn't like riding out late at night to convince a bounty hunter, she's going whether he agrees to it or not. This one easily rates a 5 out of 5 western stars in my book. Can't wait for more from Robin!!!

This was my first book to read of Robin Lee Hatcher. I absolutely enjoyed it! Quickly read it because I needed to know what was going to happen. And there was not only drama and plot twists but a captivating love story! Looking forward to reading more of her books.
BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB Silver Matlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad idea. Bad for Silver's already tarnished reputation in her small Colorado town. MY REVIEW I started out feeling sorry for Silver, for more reasons than one, then admired her for her fearlessness to go after what belonged to her family at all cost. Jared's reason for becoming a bounty hunter was heart wrenching and I liked how he allowed Silver to travel with him, he felt he didn't have a choice, even though he knew he shouldn't. Robin kept me on the edge of my seat at times, sometimes I found myself thinking she shouldn't to do that, she has to do something, he told her not to, DARN, I can't tell you if she did or not, you'll have to read the book! The book moves right along even though there wasn't much talkig to each other except for one giving orders and the other taking orders, or does she?
This is my first of Robin Lee Hatcher's books. I read it in less than 24 hours and wondered what took me so long to read one of her novels!.
Silver is a beautiful tomboy determined to be strong--especially after being stood up at the altar and faced with the potential of her family's financial ruin. Convinced the fate of her father's mercantile is in her hands since her former fiancee is the thief who put her in this predicament, she hires Jared to find the man. And the gold.
Little does she know Jared is already on a manhunt of his own. I enjoyed how Silver and Jared's motivations were crystal clear from the beginning; they are driven to get justice. Well, this drive carries them across the West!
What I Didn't Like As Much
I love Silver's name, but I would have liked to know just how she came by it. Also, the scene where Jared and Silver finally realize that they're on this mission together--but for different reasons...I would have liked to see that happening because it seems important, but it's almost skimmed over. Still, the pacing doesn't suffer, as we're almost immediately right back on a horse and traipsing through the desert with the jilted bride and her bounty hunter!
Complete with danger, mysteries, and surprise revelations, this book follows two hearts as they pursue what they think they want and discover what they really want is each other. The faith message, strong yet subtle, was probably my favorite part. I'll be looking for more of Robin Lee Hatcher's books!

Rating: 3.5 (Ratings between 3.5 and 4.5 are books that I greatly enjoyed. 5's are saved for those exceptional books that only come along once in a blue moon!)
I always enjoy Robin Lee Hatcher's writing because she infuses her interesting storylines with character depth, attention to detail, and spiritual insights - and The Heart's Pursuit is no different. Set in 1873, this story beautifully captures the flavor of the Old West as Jared and Silver travel across the countryside and small towns in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada. Robin has a gift when it comes to settings and her vivid descriptions conjured up images from TV westerns that I watched growing up. . .
I'd put this one in the 3.5 range if I could. It's my first Robin Lee Hatcher book (I received an e-copy from the publisher through the Booklook Bloggers program in exchange for my review) and I enjoyed the story for the most part. It didn't "wow" me, although that's certainly not a requirement. But the characters were strong and believable and the conflict was enough to keep me turning the pages.
Silver and Jared were both amazing characters. The story was a real page turner and before I knew it, it was over. Another winner by Robin Lee Hatcher.
The stepmother was an interesting character and it was good to see Silver's father show some backbone in the end.
There is just no meat to the words in these pages. Events happen and conversations between characters occur extremely fast with no elaboration or detail. Despite the length and nature of this book, I felt like I was reading a story written by a high schooler trying to fit as much action in as possible, without any real thought behind it. There’s no imagery, no immersion. It was hard to feel anything while reading this book, especially when all the characters are bland, flat, with horrible dialogue. There were a few “wild west” historical aspects that I liked in the few times Hatcher described places or things, and I genuinely hoped that this would’ve been a book chock-full of just that.
The secondhand embarrassment and cringe is astronomical, which is precisely what I was worried about when picking up this book. Jared’s reasoning for letting Silver accompany him in the first place is so stupid… just because she’s so “gorgeously stunning but acts like nobody ever tells her she’s pretty blah blah blah.” It’s a trope that’s just so over-done and always so horribly implemented, and paired with the flat characters of Silver and Jared, made this book a no-go for me.
I FINALLY decided to give this book up when Silver was flustered by seeing “a man’s bare chest and muscular abdomen” for the first time 🙄
