"The dilemma faced by patients who have progressed and developed in psychotherapy is essentially no different from that faced by every human being. The alternatives are clear: without challenging destructive aspects of ourselves as represented by the voice, we will gradually submit to an alien, inimical point of view and shut down on our authentic self and unique outlook; on the other hand, disrupting powerful, self-protective defenses intensifies our awareness of life's tragic aspects and threatens at times to overwhelm us with feelings of helplessness and dread." Directed primarily at psychotherapists, any one on a hardened journey to do 'the work' themselves, will find this a fascinating pre- cursor to identifying sources of self- destructive behaviours and begin to isolate them from our 'self'. Having experienced some cognitive behavior therapy this seminal study gave me insight into where negative core beliefs derive from, how they can manifest and how they can affect our self-image, behaviours and relationships. This is a superb piece of research and work, which, if you feel you are similarly affected, follow up with some CBT reading, or do the work. Good luck.
