L.A. Lost & Found: An Architectural History of Los Angeles

Rate this book
Lost & Found is a classic study of the landmarks of the odd and the sublime that make up the built environment of Los Angeles. Kaplan's 1987 classic of urban historicism is reprinted with all the illustrations from the original edition, including many photographs by famed architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Kaplan traces the architectural history of this city from its founding to today, pausing to mourn the lost treasures and celebrate the unique visions that have made Los Angeles the brash and energetic place it is today.

This book is fairly old now but it’s a great coffee table and historical read. If you are interested in learning about the architecture and history of building styles, communities, changes and trolley/tram routes then this is a great start.

The book goes through various centuries and decades up until the end of the 20th century. I highly recommend for Angelenos or those abroad like me who just love visiting and learning more about the sprawling urban gritty metropolis.

I found my copy online from a second hand book seller and think it was definitely worth the price and shipping wait.

Honestly one of the most entertaining and thorough histories of LA I have read. Combines urban studies, architecture, and local history all in one.

A very Euro-centric architectural history of LA published in the 90s. Not much more to say

Great read. Excellent pictures. Even though it’s a bit dated, fun for anyone living in La.
