Vall's Will

Rate this book
A Nion warrior never kills. Never. But this time, she may have to destroy the man she loves. They found him chained in the depths of an enemy ship. Half-starved, beaten, and abused in more ways than anyone could ever imagine, the man still exhibited a strength of character that impressed his deliverers, including Captain Willis Tayte. Something about this one, whom his captors called Vall, tugged at her heart. It was too bad she wouldn't have the chance to explore the exciting new feelings he brought to her when she was around him. Her orders were to deliver him to the nearest Regency base, where it would be determined what species he belonged to, and then be indoctrinated into his new life of freedom. He would be returned home, and Will would go back to her ship. At least, that was the plan, until a ship of unknown origin suddenly appears from out of nowhere and demands Vall in exchange for her life and the lives of millions more. It isn't until she finally discovers Vall's true identity that Will realizes how special he is to keeping balance in the Universe. And how special she has become to him.

Great premise but poor execution

Okay, let me start with the good points: I liked the premise, and I certainly liked Vall. Will had her moments, too. I'm not much into deep space settings, but this one worked well. What kept me reading was finding out Vall's origin and how he would overcome his captivity.

Since he overcame his captivity in two seconds, that didn't last long...

The thing that really bothered me was the moments the couple chose to be intimate. Like everything is about to explode, people are dying, we need to go! But first--let's have a quicky right here right now for no other reason than we want to. I mean, it wasn't even because the plot demanded it. With so many opportunities to do this in a calm setting and taking their time (which only happens once) I was constantly thinking how irresponsible Will was for letting this happen.

My second problem is that Will completely goes into a "relationship" with someone who merely days ago had been a prisoner for 20 years. He has no way of framing or dealing with a physical relationship, and his attachment to her is understandable, but she's the adult here. It felt like she was unknowingly taking advatage of the poor guy, and no one ever questions it. If Vall had been a girl and Will a guy, it would have been creepy all around.

Which leads me to my third complaint: would someone please help Vall? He's been alone and a prisoner for 20 years but it's okay to leave him in his room. He doesn't even know what knocking is. And, I don't know, some psych evaluation, and getting him acquainted with the ship and general knowledge on how to go around would have been nice. At some point, Will became the worst captain ever.

Finally, what kept throwing me out of the story was the long exposition. Like, every time the author needed to finally explain something, it had to come out in textwalls.

The final explanations were unconvincing, honestly, if not downright cruel. For all that they went through, Vall is still pretty much a child--Will says as much--and she still keeps thinking on everafters and sexy times. If your job is to keep one of the most powerful beings in the universe happy, the least you could do is start by letting them recover their identy and be whole persons by themselves, not emotionally dependent beings because you fell in love with them.

So, two stars because the idea is good, it just needs to be told the right way.

Wow! This one came out of left field for me. Found on recommended reads slide on Amazon and thought I'd give it a go. This sci-fi romance starts off at a fast pace and doesn't let up. I loved everything about it and that's rare for me! Also, no editing errors which is nice:)

Quick Rundown: Chick is high-ranking captain of her own ship and she's not human (no one is in this story- nice!). Her team takes down an enemy ship of kinda dumb spider aliens and find what they think is a humanoid prisoner (Dude) whose been severely mal-nourished. She saves his life and comes to find out that he's something no one ever suspected. Lots of battles ensue over Dude and then you'll cry like a baby...well, I did.

World Building: This was done very well. Descriptions of rooms, ships, space stations were enough to draw the picture without overloading so the pacing stays fast. Everything is alien in this book as there are no human characters which was a nice twist on the genre. Tech-speak was good without being obnoxious. I really got a feel for the technology and was amazed at the consistency in it's use by the author. She remembered to turn the translator on and off for example. She has the Dude patting the Chick's cabin door because of course he wouldn't know what knocking was. I really got the impression that the author "walked through" the scenes in her head just like how they story board movies in pre-production.

Characters: Exceptional and different! Chick was the bad-ass in this one for the most part. She saves the Dude and that's a pretty good message in my book and a nice break from the norm. But, she's not alpha about it. The Dude while at times vulnerable was not emasculated. She was strong, communicated well and made well thought out decisions. I also loved the "hairstyle" choice the author made at one point. It was honest and commendable to go there in this genre, I think and proved how strong she was. Dude had me feeling for him. I don't know how he came off as so developed when he didn't say much at all. I suppose it's what he did and how good this author is. Secondary characters were pretty brief except for one and he (Sub-Captain) was not as predictable as I believed.

Plot: When you spell it out as girl meets boy, girl saves boy it seems like it's been done before but not the way this author did it. She definitely put her own flavor on it and it was not something I've read before. She wasn't a shrew and He wasn't a bumbling fool. It wasn't terribly complex though I was confused at one point for a short time, but her characters were intriguing and different so she made it special that way.

Overall: Fast paced without being rushed and everything MADE SENSE!!! I couldn't put it down and I cried like a little bitch at the end.

This is my first book by this author. For a change the heroine is the one rescuing the hero. This just missed being a 5 star book for me. I really enjoyed it.

Now, I'm off to peruse the author's back-list which looks quite extensive. Oh the joy of wallowing in a stack of well written books! I feel like it's Christmas all over again. :D

Listened to the audio via Audible Escape. Not the greatest narrator, but I really enjoyed the story!

The characters are very one dimensional, I mean the male lead barely says more than a handful of words the whole book. Its definitely of the 'our eyes met and it was eternal undying love' variety. That being said it was a really enjoyable, light read. If you're looking for something quick, easy and fun I'll go out on a limb and recommend this book, flaws and all.

Great Story

Due to grammar and spelling: 4-stars

Otherwise this is a great story! An extremely fun read with emotional highs and lows. Love the storyline.

This was a good story, for a romance (could've been better).

Some of the angel/demon stuff annoyed me... but hey, short, sweet read.
