The bells ring out over the city of Lincoln, and at the Twin Spire Hotel, the Sanford 3rd Age Club celebrate with their customary enthusiasm. It’s the kind of party Joe enjoys; a Murder Mystery Weekend. A drama designed to tax his powers of observation and deduction.
But dark forces are at work in the background. How much does Robbie Kendrew hate his boss and his rival? Is Melanie’s interest in Joe limited to the performing rights for his cases? How did Gerry Carlin manage to seduce Wendy so quickly?
When there are not one but two killings in 24 hours...

A retired hypnotherapist and adult education teacher with a one-megaton sense of humour, David Robinson is a Yorkshireman from the outskirts of Manchester, northwest England, where he lives with his wife and a crazy Jack Russell Terrier named Joe (because he looks like a Joe).
He writes in several genres under different pseudonyms, but his mainstay is crime and mystery. He published several novels with different publishers until, in 2011, he turned to self-publishing on the Kindle, putting out 15 titles. In January 2012 Crooked Cat Publishing picked up the first of his popular Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries, The Filey Connection. More titles in the series are due in the near future.
He also produces darker, edgier thrillers, such as The Handshaker and Voices; titles which are aimed exclusively at an adult audience and which question the perceptions of reality.
In a more light-hearted mood again, he turns out the occasional sci-fi or paranormal adventure and he has also published some non-fiction.
As at March, 2012, he is working on more of the Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries and a sequel to The Handshaker.
Usual confined setting. Obvious early on that there was something suspicious about the women. Good double plot - a murder mystery weekend and real life murders, a number of red herrings. Lacks attention to detail - would Joe really drink lager?seems unlikely. The author has some good plotting ideas, but the actual writing needs to be improved. Looking forward to this series developing.
It's funny I still can't make up my mind about this series. I keep thinking I should really enjoy it but each time there's something not quite right. Maybe I can't quite relate to the characters, but it was an ok read.
I like these books a lot. Joe and his sidekicks Sheila and Brenda are quite funny. I also like the details of the places they visit. They are all very down to earth. I need to read the next book.
Another fun mystery weekend with Joe, Sheila, Brenda and co. This time it's mixed up with a staged murder mystery. I did have an idea of whodunnit towards the end, but I didn't work out all the details. And the interactions between friends and foes kept me reading.
In the 5th book in the series, we find the gang going to Lincoln for New Year, for a Murder Mystery Weekend. But, in addition to the murders they have to solve from the theatre company, there's two "real" murders too for Joe and friends to deal with! I was mildly amused that the other group on vacation in the hotel were from Sheffield, needless to say :) I did half guess the perps, but the way the story went, I did wonder at times how it was going to come back to them. But this series of books can do no wrong for me so far, it's not just the plot (which is probably "basic" for knowledgeable crime fiction readers), but all the little things like the interaction between the characters that make these books such a pleasure, we all know people like the members of the Sanford Third Age Club.
Very interesting premise: A real murder happens while a fake murder is taking place. And the best thing is, they continue with the fake murder to help the participants deal with the real murder.
Entertaining read. The mysteries are cleverly laid. I would try another book by this author. I would have been happier without all the affairs going on, but I suppose it speaks to motivation.
This book was enjoyable. I could not predict the ending, which was an added bonus, and the characters were never dull. I would read another one of his books definitely!
