Wendy Wax, author of Ten Beach Road, returns with a novel of three women in need of a second chance . . . or is it a third?
When unlikely friends Madeline, Avery, and Nicole arrive in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood, they’re hoping for a do-over. Literally. They’ve been hired to bring a historic house back to its former glory on a new television show called Do Over. If they can just get this show off the ground, Nikki could fix her finances, Avery could restart her career, and Maddie would have a shot at keeping her family together.
The women quickly realize that having their work broadcast is one thing, but having their personal lives play out on TV is another. Soon they’re struggling to hold themselves, and the project, together. With a decades-old mystery—and hurricane season—looming, the women are forced to figure out just how they’ll weather life’s storms . . .
I write novels that explore friendship, self-discovery and the challenges life brings us, leavened with a touch of humor. I'm proud of all my books and perhaps best known for my "Ten Beach Road" titles including the USA Today bestsellers, Ten Beach Road and The House on Mermaid Point, and for While We Were Watching Downton Abbey.
I was born in St.Petersburg, Florida and grew up on St. Pete Beach within spitting distance of the Gulf of Mexico. I went, appropriately enough, to Sunshine Elementary School where recess and art class sometimes took place on the beach, and the highlight of every school year was the annual fish broil.
It’s hard to be a type-A personality when you grow up in such a laid back environment, but I managed. Convinced that you were expected to know how to read BEFORE you showed up for school, I forced a neighbor friend to teach me to read at the age of five. I’ve been reading ever since.
Books, in all forms, are one of my greatest pleasures and best forms of escape. And they’ve had a major impact on my life.
I went to the University of Georgia after reading Gone with the Wind one too many times. For a while I re-read Margaret Mitchell’s classic yearly, saw the movie whenever it played within twenty miles, and could quote large passages from memory. Today I have a growing GWTW collection, and the time I spoke at he Margaret Mitchell House was an incredible thrill.last
After college I worked in radio, television, and film. Like Olivia in 7 DAYS AND SEVEN NIGHTS, I’ve done live talk radio. I hosted a show in the eighties called Desperate & Dateless, and while I was never locked in an apartment for a week with a webcam rolling as she was, I did fall in love. Happily, the man who swept me off my feet consults with financial types and understands the bottom line. Unlike Olivia’s nemesis, Matt Ransom, my husband has never, to my knowledge, advised anyone to ‘love the one they’re with.’ We live in Atlanta with our two sons.
I was drawn to this book by the cover art and title, looking for a beach read (well...a lakeside read). The back cover promised a "beautiful book about loyalty, courage, and pursuing your dreams", so I gave it a try.
I'm torn on the rating - it really deserves a three and a half stars. There's nothing majorly WRONG with the book - a story of five women who band together to solve some short-term problems and who find the courage during the story to tackle some long-term problems. Sounds like a perfect women's fiction story. I just felt it seemed a bit flat. Too many of the plot developments were clearly hinted at too far ahead of time and I just didn't find any fresh ideas or lingering images.
Compared with my current read - Hotel Paradise - this book just seemed a bit generic. Throw together five women, most of whom have man problems or mother problems, stir things up a bit, and bake until lightly browned. Kinda like a store-bought apple pie - it's not BAD, it's just not as good as it could have been. I see that most other people have given it a four or five star rating, so I guess you should take this review with a grain of salt.
I don’t know about ya’ll, but it is HOT here in Tennessee! And nothing is better than drinking a big glass of sweet tea and reading on a hot day and Ocean Beach by Wendy Wax is a perfect summer read!
Ocean Beach is the “next chapter” in the lives of Nicole, Avery and Maddie, who were first introduced to readers in Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax (2011). I have not read Ten Beach Road nor do I feel you have to in order to read Ocean Beach. I was able to read along just fine. However, after reading Ocean Beach I will say I’d love to read any and everything Wendy Wax has written!
An unusual group of friends are working together to get a home renovation TV pilot off the ground. These ladies aren’t looking for TV celebrity, but wanting to get their lives back on track. That’s right a story about empowering women and home renovation—I loved it from get go!
These lovely ladies are looking for a Do Over, while restoring an old Miami South Beach Mansion (Nice!). The owner of the mansion is Max Golden, an elderly gentleman who in his prime partied with the rat pack. Max isn’t just looking to have his home restored, he is looking for something or better yet someone.
When the ladies arrive at the Miami house to start the renovation and filming for their show, they are shocked to find out the television network has decided instead to turn the whole thing into a reality show. Avery feels a loss of control and begins to fear the network will portray her as a bimbo who doesn’t know how to run a construction site. Nicole has been hoping to get her match making business back off the ground, but fears a ‘reality’ show is only going to cast a bright light back on her brother the criminal. And Maddie isn’t sure her marriage can take it.
There are also a few other characters in the story. Deidre who is the decorator and Avery’s estranged mother. Deidre is looking to find a way back into her daughter’s life and Avery wants very little to do with her. There is also Kyra, Maddie’s daughter. Kyra is video recording the renovation and has an adorable baby boy, Dustin. And Dustin’s dad is a famous actor who just so happens to show up in Miami South Beach to work on a movie.
With the cameras rolling, the women pull up their sleeves and get to work. But it isn’t long before their real lives are playing out in front of the cameras—in a big way!
I loved this book! I just fell in love with all the characters, especially Max! I could see why the ladies wanted to help him. I enjoyed the numerous stories lines and never felt it got confusing. There is a little mystery in the book, but I figured it out right away. I did enjoy how I kept waiting for someone to figure it out in the book. I was sort of surprised at the end because not everything felt fully resolved. I have to admit I liked that. I can’t help but think we’ll see these ladies again! I sure hope so!
Honestly, there wasn’t anything about this book I didn’t enjoy—the closer to the end of the book the more I enjoyed it!
Grab a copy for your beach bag! I’m recommending Ocean Beach!
The ladies are back! Maddie, Avery, and Nicole are ready for this project - a restoration of an old Art Deco home in Miami Beach. Max Goldman, the 90 something owner is also looking forward to seeing "The Millicent" returned to her grandeur. He promised Millie he would.
Restoration is the theme for this second installment of Wendy Wax's Ten Beach Road Series. Avery is hoping to restore her image from a bimbo with the Lifetime series, Do Over, Deidre is hoping to restore her relationship with Avery, and Maddie hopes the show will restore her marriage to a more solid foundation. Nicole is hoping the show won't cast her in a bad light because of her brother - she also lost everything to Malcom Dyer and his ponzi scheme. But she does have a potential client. Just maybe her Matchmaking business can be resuscitated. And FBI Joe Girardi is in the Miami office. For Maddie's daughter, Kyra, Do Over is her chance to restore her career and provide for her son.
But the new network head has other plans. The Ladies learn Do Over is going to be a reality show, rather than a "re-do" show. Everything and everyone is within limits, especially when little Dustin's famous movie star father come to town. There is a fifty year old mystery too.
I love these ladies! And many parts had me laughing (Maddie's texts) and the ending had me shedding a few tears. Wendy Wax tells a great story and her writing keeps your interest after the first paragraph. I will revisit Maddie, Kyra, Nicole, Deidre, and Avery to see what happens since a few threads were left untucked.
This is the second book in a trilogy. I would recommend reading the first one first (Ten Beach Road) since it introduces the characters and is a large part of the story so far.
Maddie, Avery and Nicole are back redoing another house for a reality show (do- over). The anoimosity is gone from the first book and there are twists and turns. I loved how the baby loved Max or "Gax". I really like how the author wrote relationships, not necessarily romantic ones, but family ones.
The second book is a strong book, just a tad less enjoyable than the first one was for me.
So go pick up the series if you can and enjoy it!
++++++++++++++++Wendy Wax, author of the “warm [and] wry” (St. Petersburg Times) Ten Beach Road, returns with a novel of three women in need of a second chance…or is it a third?
Unlikely friends Madeline, Avery and Nicole have hit some speed bumps in their lives, but when they arrive in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood, they are all hoping for a do-over. Literally. They’ve been hired to bring a once-grand historic house back to its former glory on a new television show called Do-Over. If they can just get this show off the ground, Nikki would get back on her feet financially, Avery could restart her ruined career, and Maddie would have a shot at keeping her family together.
At least, that’s the plan – until the women realize that having their work broadcast is one thing, having their personal lives play out on TV is another thing entirely. Soon they are struggling to hold themselves, and the project, together. With a decades-old mystery—and the hurricane season—looming, the women are forced to figure out just how they’ll weather life’s storms…
3.5 Stars. I absolutely loved the first book in this series so I was excited to dive into this one as well. While, as another reviewer pointed out, there is nothing wrong with this one, I liked it well enough but I didn't love it. It just didn't draw me in like the first one but I did still want to know how things were going to turn out.
In this book, due to Kyra's filming of the restoration of Bella Flora, the ladies have been offered a pilot for "Do Over," which Lifetime has presented to them as a restoration show, but they soon find out is actually a reality TV show, much to their displeasure. Still, they set out to bring "The Millicent," a house owned by a 90-year old retired vaudeville performer (Max) back to life so he can fulfill his wife's dying wish.
You can't have a reality TV show without drama and the ladies certainly have their share of that - but not necessarily that they want aired for the entire world to see: Maddie's 27 year marriage to Steve is still incredibly strained. Avery still feels the sting of Deirdre's abandonment and does not want to work beside her. Nicole is introduced to a potential client who she hopes will reboot her matchmaking service while being pursued (romantically this time) by FBI Agent Joe Giraldi who doesn't trust the guy. And Kyra is now mom to the infant son of one of the world's most famous movie stars (who also happens to in South Beach shooting a movie) and she immediately butts heads with the Lifetime cameraman, much like Avery did with Chase Hardin in the first book.
In places it felt like there was a formulaic approach happening (potential "hatred to romance" plotline, impending crisis which threatens everything), which was a bit disappointing, though I was pleased when some things didn't turn out the way I was expecting them to based on what happened in "Ten Beach Road." There was also a mystery aspect to this one (what happened to Max's son, who was kidnapped at age 3) and I liked how the ladies managed to find ways to try to figure that out without the watchful eye of the film crew. I also liked how that was the real driving force in Max wanting the house restored. Max's bond with Kyra's baby was incredibly sweet and endearing.
There really was a lot to like about this book. I can see how it would be hard to write a series in which the main characters are restoring houses and keep it fresh. One can only talk about that process so much before it gets old - I know as I've been remodeling my own home while reading these books. I was trying to imagine how "Do Over" would be as a reality show, and quite frankly, I thought it would be pretty boring!
The jokes about Maddie's inability to text coherently became old by the end of the book and there were some things that just didn't ring true: like a famous designer not coming up on a Google search under her maiden name, but when found by searching her married name, articles came up listing her maiden name as well. That had me shaking my head in total disbelief.
Overall, this felt like catching up with old friends, which is a great quality to have in a series! I look forward to see what is going to happen next for these ladies, just with lower expectations than the first book gave me for this one. And if this series were adapted for TV, I'd still totally watch it.
Madeline, Avery, Nicole, Deirdre, and Chase are back from their stint in the novel, Ten Beach Road, with some kinks solved and some still lurking as they embark on another "Do-Over" of a dilapidated home that is an architectural treasure! But you wouldn't know it to read the descriptions of what these fearful but also feisty characters see, hear, smell, and touch on their first exploration of their latest project in South Miami, Florida. Here's the difference - they are now part of a TV program in which their redo job is to be followed like a reality show. But don't realize that all of their lives are to be included this "reality" show. That's their first major shock!
This is the home of Max, a former comedian, who has recently lost Millie, the love of his life. He's still got plenty of pizazz but it's laced with lack of energy and admission of total lack of skills to keep this gorgeous "nautical" home in the prime condition it deserves. Now a bit of zest comes back into his life as he enjoys the presence of these diverse ladies and of course Baby Dustin.
All is not bliss. There's a serious lack of money for this project that not even the TV pay can help. Then there are the personal problems plaguing their daily progress. Maddie's husband wants her to stay home and be the homemaker while he "earns the bread;" Avery and Deirdre are still on rocky road territory with the latter wanting to make up for years of no mothering and the former not buying the efforts one bit. Nicole wants to resurrect her matchmaking business, ruined by her reputation as the wife of a Ponzi-scheming criminal. Avery and Chase are a hot number now but there are some issues there as well. At first one might think this is just a rehash of the last novel, but it's NOT so! For there are secrets lurking that turn this summer (all-year round really) read into a romantic mystery that's even more thrilling than the last novel.
Max and Millie lived with a heart-breaking secret that just might fit into the "do-over" plans with some help from other new characters in this terrific story. The cameramen learn to be a bit wiser about what they film and don't film after some nasty and also funny scenes. To tell more would be a spoiler that would deprive you of hours of pleasure!
Ocean Beach: A Novel is plainly and imply a great and must read!!! Wendy Wax is one very talented writer who knows how to craft a great story with complex characters, a great plot, and plug in just enough steamy romance to satisfy everyone. Finely done!!!
I really wish Goodreads allowed for half star ratings, but they don't, so my 4 star rating is a bit inflated. It merits a solid 3.5 stars, but not a full 4. "Ocean Beach" is the 2nd novel in the "Ten Beach Road" series of long novels written by Wendy Wax. I have preferred her non-series books to these, but they are fine for keeping me company when I am driving around, running errands, or taking a walk. I wish I could be as kind to the audiobook narrator, but I can't. Why are these audio versions not edited for correct pronunciation? In this 2nd novel, Nikky, Avery, Maddie, and Maddie's daughter, Kira, now a young mother, are back and renovating another large beach house in disarray. This time, however, they are not doing so to sell the home for their own financial needs, but because they have been asked to do so by the elderly, widowed, owner, Max, and the entire renovation will be filmed for a reality tv show. Kira is back with her camera, along with a crew. Also returning is Delia, Avery's estranged mother who abandoned Avery and Avery's father when she was a young child. She just cannot let go of her resentment and anger, no matter how hard Delia tries to make amends. There is a mystery and a smoking gun in this novel, which made for more compulsive reading. I figured it out from the start, lol, but there were some fun twists along the way. Max has never gotten over the son who was only three years' old when he simply vanished. No body was ever found, and the police could never find the little boy. That is the mystery that underlies the plot of the book, but so do some continued, and budding romances, though these novels are more about friendships and estrangements than they are about romance. One pivotal, nail biting scene will change everything, for the good and the not so good. You will have to read it to know what I mean. There is one more novel in the series, and I will read it, just to know how all the relationships are tied up. These are not awful books, but they are not so great that I would recommend them as anything special. 3.5 stars
- 09/10 Punkte
Wendy Wax has done it again - written a captivating novel with some truly wonderful characters. As a followup to Ten Beach Road where the women, Nikki, Avery and Maddie first met under somewhat dire financial circumstances and forged a strong bond of friendship, Ocean Beach takes us on the next step in their life's journey.
Nicole: Almost broke, her matchmaking business kaput and feeling alone, Nicole is still experiencing some guilt about turning in her brother Malcolm to the FBI. Malcolm's ponzi scheme was solely responsible for her, Avery and Maddie losing all their money in the first place and becoming joint owners of the house on Ten Beach Road.
Maddie: At a crossroads in her 26 year marriage to Steve, Maddie finds a core of strength she never knew she had and is more determined than ever to be independent and resourceful. She knows what is important and she strives to do everything for the good of others. She's the quintessential mother.
Avery: A little more prickly than the other women in the group, Avery is still carrying the hurt and anger at her mother, Deirdre, for abandoning her for a Hollywood design career. Now that Deirdre is back and on this project, Avery is having a hard time putting the past behind her and moving on. With a failed marriage in her past, she also has some serious self image hangups. It was gratifying to watch her work on these issues.
Deirdre: Still guilt ridden about leaving her family when Avery was young, Deirdre is trying her best to make Avery understand how much she does love her and that her foolish decision to leave was not out of indifference. Ms.Wax aptly put the reader into the heads of both mother and daughter showing their sides of the story.
Kyra: Maddie's young daughter whose unfortunate affair with a celebrity leaves her as a single mom but now that she has her head on straight, she's doing her best to provide her son with a stable life. It was Kyra's idea to film the women rebuilding Ten Beach Road that led them to a contract with the TV station to do over Ocean Beach. Kyra may be young but she has a good business head on her shoulders and a promising career as a videographer. When she was emotionally threatened, she responded in such a mature way, I was rooting for her the whole time.
The introduction of Max, the house's 90 year old owner, really brought the plot together. I adored Max!
Ms. Wax not only manages to flesh out her characters so well that by the time the book ends you will feel like these women are lifelong friends, but she also incorporates a heart wrenching mystery into the plot. Ocean Beach has the right blend of elements that make for a good read: endearing, strong women characters, intriguing male characters, credible dialogue, a little romance and a plot that will keep you interested to the last page. Even the "bad" characters have their place. Oh, I hated to see it end but I loved the ending and so hope Ms. Wax has more in store for us with these characters. I am not ready to let them go. Not by a long shot. I couldn't put it down. 5*****
Disclosure: A review copy of the book was provided by Berkley in exchange for my honest opinion
I received a copy of Ocean Beach in exchange for an honest review. This was the first book I read from Wendy Wax, and I was excited to tear into it. The story followed characters from her previous novel Ten Beach Road ¬- Madeline, Avery and Nicole. After renovating Bella Flora, the women get an opportunity to fix up another home – this time in South Beach and while shooting a pilot for a television show called Do Over. What they didn’t realize is that the TV show about renovating old homes has actually turned into a reality show. Maddie’s daughter Kyra had an affair with a much-married famous actor that produced a son, and the producers are dead-set on having the baby a feature in the show. Avery’s mother Deirdre is also along for the ride, and trying to mend their broken relationship. Deirdre left Avery when she was a young girl to pursue her career, and Avery is unsure she can ever get past that betrayal. Nicole is trying to overcome a scandal her money-hungry brother put her through and get her matchmaking business back on track, and Maddie is trying to save her own marriage. The women invade the house and meet the sweet old man who owns it, Max. Together, the entire group try to put the once lively house back together – but an air of mystery surrounds why Max is so insistent on getting it “ready” for someone from the past.
I will say, I think you need to read Ten Beach Road before Ocean Beach. When I got the book, I didn’t realize it was a continuation from a previous novel, but I could easily tell right from the beginning that was clearly the case. I just felt like I had missed a huge chunk of storyline, and that feeling never went away. While I enjoyed the story and the characters, I most definitely recommend you read Ten Beach Road first. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of Max and Millie’s missing son, though I will say that it wasn’t too much of a mystery. I had it figured out right away, and in my eyes it was fairly obvious as to who the child abductor was. Krya drove me a bit batty with her decisions, which were also obvious that they were going to backfire on her, but I enjoyed the dynamic between her and her mom Maddie. One thing that confused me – and this is a really small detail – was the back and forth between Nicole and Nikki. At first, I thought they were two separate people, and I got a bit lost. But Nicole and other characters refer to her as both, and I just didn’t understand the constant switching. Max was such a sweet character, I loved how jovial he was and the love story that happened between him and his late wife Millie was so enchanting. Overall, I liked the book and would recommend – after Ten Beach Road of course!
The good: Kyra kicked Daniel to the curb. Bye Felicia. I really thought she and Troy would get together... that was disappointing. Loved the scenes talking about Millie. Also loved the twist that Pamela took Aaron.
The bad: However, the fact that NO ONE THOUGHT TO INVESTIGATE PAMELA is insane to me. She was rejected and fired but no one looked into her when their kid went missing immediately? Also, why was the granddaughter's name Millie? Are we supposed to believe this is just a CRAZY COINCIDENCE or that Pamela really wouldn't have said, "hey, Millie is a weird name from my past, please don't name your daughter that"? And what is up with Steve? How did he go from depressed husband to "my wife, child, and grandchild were in serious danger but I'm too busy to care? And Deirdre was whiny AF the entire time.
The ugly: We had some random rich guy try to politely call Nicole to murder her, then when that didn't work, he showed up at a house with like a hundred people there to kill her and all of her friends? Then Dustin happened to start walking at that EXACT MOMENT so what's his name's reaction is to shoot this baby? Don't even get me started on Daniel. We had Daniel dressing in blackface. We had Daniel showing up to work things out with Kyra, then we had Daniel making out with a random, then we had Tonja super shocked that Daniel was making out with the random when she already knew he had multiple mistresses. The part where Daniel only cared about Dustin because he was a boy was gross, but in an unbelievable kind of way. And tied with the rich-kid-matchmaker storyline for Most Unbelievable Storyline, we had the most famous female celebrity in the world trying to end this virtually unknown reality/home makeover show so that her family could have a show. On Lifetime. If there's one thing I know about mega-celebrities, it's that they are dying for a reality show on Lifetime.

Having enjoyed Wendy Wax's first in the series: Ten Beach Road and was excited to continue to catch up with these loveable characters, plus the setting in South Florida (Ten Beach Road #2) OCEAN BEACH. I love....three women in need of a second chance…

(Since I live in South Florida, love the South Beach connection)!!
Looking forward to #3 as we continue the exciting journey. A perfect beach read. If you have not read this Southern Author, highly recommend - all her books.
Although, I enjoyed the first book. I would like to have given 3.5 stars instead of three. I wanted more character development in the second book. I enjoyed the change of Maddie, she showed the most growth. I hope there is more growth in Nicole's character with the third book. But I'm over the mother/daughter angst with Maddie and her daughter and Avery and her mother. Avery is supposed to be portrayed as a strong willed, but came off as a whinny with a chip on her shoulder. I would have liked not having to deal with the daughter and her married actor baby's daddy. There was too much of this story-line in the book if this book about Nicole, Maddy and Avery that should have been the focus.
This is the second book in the trilogy and you really need to read book 1 to fully understand the characters. Maddie, Avery and Nicole are filming a pilot for a reality show called Do-Over and have a house to re-do in South Beach. This time, they start out as friends but run into many obstacles. Along with the work involved with the house, there is the old vaudeville owner who they all come to love, the cameraman for the network, the jealous husband, the actor father and various other character and sub plots. Just as with book one, this isn't a deep book and its all pretty predictable but its fun to read and the main characters are all very likable. Its a fun summer book!
Ocean Beach was a great read. I laughed, cried, and wondered what was going to happen to the ladies. They were all concerned with each other, the project, and Max who’s home they were doing over because of a promise he had made. Will the girls help Max? How will their project go with them being filmed for a reality TV show? I totally enjoyed Ocean Beach and so will you.
Received by the publisher for an honest review by My Book Addiction and More.
Another great Wendy Wax book. The characters are more and more likeable. Each one of us can find one of them to relate too. Love how the plots develop and although little bits are far fetched it is done in such a tasteful way that it doesn't seem to matter. It will make you laugh, cry, think and at the very end be sorry that it is over. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent read! Second book in a series by Wendy Wax. The four women who face adversity with determination rely on each other as they struggle with finances, family and self worth. Love the characters and the story. Did not want to put the book down!
Really liked this book. It's been awhile since I read the first one, so it took a bit to remember their stories. This one continued it! There was mystery, romance, fixer-upper, and a little history. Great read!
I'm warming up to this series. I don't love it but the more time we spend with the characters the more I care about their story. In this one, the girls all come back together and take on their first project for their Life Time show called "Do Over". They're redoing an old mansion in Florida. The guy who lives there is an 85 year old man named Max. He and his wife were a famous pair of comedians but his wife has passed and his house is in need of a serious revamp. All of the ladies are back- Madeline (the mom of the group and literal mom to Kira), Avery (the former HGTV star) and Nikki (the matchmaker whose brother was the one who stole from all of them). Kira has her son from the movie star and he's an infant. The story just follows them as they redo the house and try to get along with the new film crew (even though Kira is still filming as well) and they try to solve a mystery from their beloved Max's past. It was a good story but had many of the same problems as the first one. Everyone has to be coupled up to be happy for the most part. It was very predictable. But overall I liked this one better than the 1st and it has convinced me to keep reading in the series.
SPOILERS AHEAD: Maddie and her husband are trying to make it work, despite his meltdown and being absent. However, he really pulls some major dick moves in this one and so she finally says adios and unfortunately even his kids see what a jerk he's being. Andrew (their son) is there helping and it was nice to have both him and Kira. Kira is trying to navigate motherhood by herself as well as fending off the paparazzi because she has a famous man's kid. He shows up and his mean wife wants to fight her for custody but she's so hot tempered, they catch her on camera being an idiot and they drop it . Kira does not like Troy, the cameraman for the series. He is bitter because someone he knows was trying to get the job that she got with the famous guy and he says she only got it because she slept with him. Maybe true but that wasn't her intention. In the end they become friends and I won't be surprised if they end up together in the end. Avery is dating Chase, the contractor from the first book. Things are going well with them and Avery is just hoping this show pans out so she can save her career. Nikki is not in a full on relationship with the FBI agent from the 1st book until the end of this one. She has a potential client for her matchmaking services but then finds out he's a crazy guy who is just about broke because her brother stole from him too. He comes with a gun and shoots Max and Deirdre and he dies. Dierdre is in this whole book and she's finally being a mother to Avery. I really started to like her in this book and felt empathy for her. In the end she proved her ultimate dedication by taking a bullet for Avery. She ends up fine and all is well. Max is the homeowner and he's a sweet old guy. His son was kidnapped when he was just a young boy and in the end the girls piece together what happened to him. A woman who had made a chandelier for their house wanted Max but couldn't have him so he kidnapped their son and raised him as her own. Unfortunately, he died in a car crash as an adult, but he has 2 kids who are reunited with their Grandpa Max in the end. Max ends up dying from the gunshot injuries, but not before the mystery is solved about his son and he gets to meet the descendants. He now has someone to leave the finished house to. On to the next book....
Ocean Beach by Wendy Wax is the second book of the Ten Ocean Beach series set in contemporary Florida. Madeline, Avery and Nicole are restoring their second historic home, at the request of an aging former comic star. Max had promised his wife Millie on her deathbed to restore the home for their missing son's return (he was kidnapped as a toddler).
Each woman is counting on success to regain financial security. Their first restoration was a wild hit in blog-land, but they haven't been able to sell the house yet. They have the chance of a television show, due to the excellent footage shot by Maddie's daughter Kyra on their first project.
Maddie's husband Steve is working again, and nurses major resentment that Maddie (pragmatically) hasn't quit working to become a stay-at-home mom, trusting in him as breadwinner. Given their previous financial crisis that isn't really over yet, she isn't going to trust his stability. But she's the eternal peacemaker, keeping her critical thoughts to herself, even though she's hurt that he shuns them while they work on the South Beach mansion.
Nikki is about to give up her elite dating business as a lost cause, when she gets one last client. He's odd, but she's desperate to restart the business, so she keeps meeting him...until he begins to frighten her. She doesn't reveal to anyone that this odd client is bothering her...which almost gets them killed.
Avery and her mother are working together, but Avery is barely civil to Deidre, who turns to Maddie for advice on how to be a mother. Avery's love interest (fellow contractor Chase) is too busy to be on the scene this time - which makes it a great chance for Avery to be top dog.
The ladies get a rude awakening: the network wants a reality show, not a real home restoration show. Avery fears she will be portrayed as a bimbo once again, and Nikki fears publicity: her relationship to her criminal brother could poison her chances of a career.
Kyra's baby boy Dustin is the joy of hers and Maddie's life - until he becomes a pawn in a high-stakes custody battle with his movie-star father (who has super-sexy looks and alley-cat morals).
It feels like being on vacation to read about these resilient women, their relationships and escapades, where love, persistence and hard work lead to satisfying results.I'm glad it's a 6-book series (so far).
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Christmas holiday! Today we are once again turning to the beach. It is time to get your tool belt out and help the ladies of Ten Beach road renovate another house. This time the location is South Beach, Florida in Wendy Wax’s Ocean’s Beach. Anyone say road trip?
“When unlikely friends Madeline, Avery, and Nicole arrive in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood, they’re hoping for a do-over.
With a decades-old mystery—and hurricane season—looming, the women are forced to figure out just how they’ll weather life’s storms...” (Amazon) My Thoughts: I enjoyed this novel. I am reviewing Ocean’s Beach as a stand alone novel. I always enjoy visiting the ladies of Ten Beach Road should you continue to follow their journey. Ocean’s Beach is the second novel in the series. It has a great setting that includes South Beach. There is significant growth in each of the characters at the end of the novel. I was glad to see Avery have a chance to grow up a little and appreciate her mother. I enjoyed reading about how the ladies out witted the cameras for the reality television show. A truly fun read!
Ten Beach Road is only the beginning! Now the ladies are back with another huge renovation/restoration project for their new show called "Do Over". This is a fun loving and spunky group of ladies that face setbacks, financial hardship, and other day to day problems. Some of the previous characters are back as well along with a few new ones. Through it all the ladies look out for each other and have each other's backs. What better place for a new project than the beach? Filled with humor, friendship, a bit of romance, and drama so what more can you ask for? I enjoyed the first book in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the second and now looking forward to the third! Wendy Wax is an author you will definitely want to add to your faves.

#2 in the series of beach-themed stories. The 3 women who renovated Bella Floral in St Pete Beach FL have been offered a pilot of a reality series for 'Do Over'. This book depicts the second renovation for this group - still trying to get back on their financial feet, and find the next chapter in their lives and, in the meantime, they continue to develop their friendships and bond.
The owner of the current Miami estate, Max, is an endearing character who was married to the love of his life, Millie. Max & Millie were vaudeville stars with true talent and devotion to each other. They build their dream house 'Millicent' and the renovations take place there - where widower Max lives. Max truly enjoys the company of this group of industrious women and forms a special bond with the newest member of the worker team 'Dustin' - 6 mo old grandson of Maddie (one of the original 3 owners). Over the course of the book, the reader learns that Max & Millie's 3-year-old son was stolen from them and Max has been in search of him ever since. During the course of the renovations and getting to really know each other, Maddie uncovers the truth about Max's son and is able to reunite him with his twin grandchildren before his tragic passing from a gunshot from a 'lost everything' (once wealthy) guy from Nicole's brother's Ponzi scheme.
It's kitschy and an easy beach read.

It took me a while to get into this book. The story begins oddly with an older couple and a promise. The story continues with the arrival of the women DIYers who apparently have the opportunity to bring an old house back to life. The premise is that Madeline, Avery, and Nicole (along with Deirdre and Kyra) are to restore the place to its former glory, filming it as a pilot for a new DIY TV show. There are plenty of restraints for the women to deal with: living arrangements, budget allocated and a film crew assigned by the producer, also the concept of what the tv show is about. Throw in a few more interesting characters and the book moves forward a little slowly at first but then it picks up speed and interest as the story continues to unfold. The story has a few twists and turns but comes to a satisfactory conclusion with all the questions brought up cleverly answered. The character development is very good.
