This is a bit more of a mystery than some other volumes. Why has someone murdered two sisters and removed their unborn children? Why is the third pregnant sister being sought? Who wants the emir dead? Once again there is an out of control sorcerer; this one consumed by the desire to be immortal.
Caina is forced to confront herself and her past, present and possible future in this book. We discover whether her allegiance is to the Ghosts or to her ideal life. Jadriga reappears and actually helps Caina succeed in her mission.
This book is worth reading if for no other reason than what happens when an elixir is consumed without all of the necessary components.
Istarinmul seeks peace with the Empire and has sent an ambassador to discuss terms. However, not everyone wants peace and Caina must protect him from Kindred Assassins, Bostaji Gardeners, and even his own Immortals. Meanwhile, an aspiring Alchemist is attempting to create his Elixir Rejuvenata and requests Caina's assistance in acquiring Phoenix ashes from the Netherworld.
We return to the capital city of Malarae and find Caina now owns exclusive rights to the only coffeehouse in the Empire, The House of Kularus. We also run into some familiar faces from past books. The overarching storyline progresses as the Moroaica gets one step closer to her goal.
It was nice to have a story that was slightly different from the usual megalomaniac trying to rule the world. For the most part I thought this was a really enjoyable read.
I wasn’t sure about the later part of the story, with Caina journeying into the netherworld, it felt like a bit of a ‘make weight’ add-on. Being chased by Fish monsters in the middle of a nightmare didn’t do a lot for me. I’m afraid this spoilt the book a little, plus there was also the reappearance of Jadriga and Sicarion, I really wish the author would ditch these two.
Dear Jonathan, I really enjoy reading your continuing adult Ghost story. I know in a couple of more Ghost books the story will continue with the Ghost in Exile series. Your imagination and creativity is astonishing and exciting to read. I highly recommend reading this series to any adult interested in reading a great story. Thanks for the entertainment and exciting action throughout the series.
this has really been a fun series. I love the main character, her experiences should have made her a horrible person but there is still a softness about her that is touching.
My only major complaint is the amount of editing errors that I have found in all of the books. They tend to interrupt the reading flow and in some instances even the continuity of the story. I haven't checked to see if the author is self publishing or not, but if he is,I hope he sees this review and has someone else read his work before he publishes his next. Only reason I didn't give a five star review.
For instance, the negotiations over the end of the war. Caina and Corvalis run the capital's coffee shop to garner gossip for the Ghosts, but their task for this book is to protect the emissary. Meanwhile, they happened on foreign assassins trying to capture a pregnant foreign woman and kill her father, a former gladiator. This strikes them as, at least, a remarkable coincidence.
The tale involves smoke bombs, coffee, the phoenix and its ashes, an archer on a rooftop, the secret of becoming a Master Alchemist, and more.
The latest of the Ghost books. Don't start here, go all the way to the beginning, "Child of the Ghosts".
Caina is an orphan, badly abused by her mother in a disastrous quest for illicit magical power. She is rescued by the Emperor's Ghosts, spies and night-fighters who try to preserve the empire of Nighmar's peace and freedom. She's raised as a Ghost night-fighter. This is one of her later adventures.
I liked this book all the way to the end. The build up was good - not rushed and the characters acting fairly realistically. The main 3 characters are nicely written.
But the actual main plot was lacking in punch. It just fizzled out to me. Maybe it was the rather understated space elves - I like sci fi. I like fantasy. Ive read my fair share of scifi/fantasy. This was pleasant - but not gripping. I kept waiting for it to take off and it never really did.
Caina's ghost circle has returned to Malarae, where an ambassador from Istarinmul is expected shortly to finalize peace talks with the Emperor. Aside from keeping him safe from assassins, Caina also has another mission on her hands: an escaped slave in fear for her life and that of her unborn child needs her help, and Caina will do everything in her power to protect her. Another great fast-paced read with lots of action.
okay, I've jumped way into the middle of this series. I really liked it and read the next one as well. I might go back and read from the start. What can I say, I like magic and spies and good vs.evil books.
I enjoyed this more than the previous book; I think now Caina has Corvalis as a love interest it has added an extra dimension to her character, which is a good thing as her hatred and anger were in danger of becoming dimmed by having to read about them so often. Looking forward to the next one!
