The book was the first of a three-book series, featuring Jason Coles, master tracker. The public response to those first three books called for more western fiction by West, and as of January 2014, Signet has published forty-five.
Inspired in his youth by great adventure authors like A.B. Guthrie and Vardis Fisher, West has always sought to be true to the men and women who braved the dangers of the savage frontier that was ultimately forged to become the American west. Novels by Charles G. West are classified as historical/westerns due to his diligent research in his subject matter, choosing to weave his fiction into the fabric of the actual places and events, being true to the times as well as the people. As a result, his protagonists are usually not heroes, but are often called upon to perform heroic deeds.
Insisting that his protagonists must be instilled with a sense of fairness in addition to courage. West readily admits that many of the characters in his books are patterned after his two sons, both of whom are graduates of the University of Montana, one still lives in Kalispell, Montana - and is the source of much of the author's detail on the ways of the mountain man. Both sons share West's love for the Big Sky Country.

A lawman hangs up his guns to go into ranching, and wouldn't you know it, a gang of outlaws come into town.
A lot like a 1950's western, or the long story in an Ace Double.

No deep plot here, but fun of you are looking for a simple shoot em' up.

Jason Storm retired after twenty-five years as a Marshall and headed for the Montana territory where he'd seen a small valley five years before he'd thought would be isolated enough from civilization. Arriving, he found signs of people and then a small town called Paradise. The law was part-time.
Raymond Pryor was a rich man interested in helping good people build a town. If he liked you, he'd back you and remain a silent partner, allowing you to run things the way you saw fit.
He liked Jason Storm and the deal he offered was more than fair. A small, off-shoot valley a day's ride from Paradise. One hundred-fifty acres at a dollar an acre, no payment due for a year, and he would even help with the stock.
Pryor and his men even helped Jason build a house, barn, corral, and he set out worjing his ranch in solitude.
Then Mace Cantrell and his outlaw band rode into Paradise. When they heard of Pryor's generosity, Cantrell was sure there would be a lot of money on hand, so they headed out to the Pryor ranch.
When it was all over, everyone at the ranch was dead and the gang had a net gain of forty-eight dollars. Outraged, they burned the buildings to the ground and headed back to Paradise to loot it of anything of value.
Enter Jason Storm.
Although retired, he couldn't let the murder of his benefactor and the threat to the people of Paradise go unchallenged.

Another solid western by one of my favorite latest authors. This story doesn’t do anything groundbreaking. It treads familiar ground I’ve seen in numerous other stories, yet I still found it an enjoyable read.
The plot could have used some work because it was repetitive.

I’d only recommend this book if you’re already a fan of westerns and looking for another to read to pas the time. Otherwise, I’d say you could probably skip this one.
I listened to the Graphic Audio audiobook and I liked the characters, music, and sound design very much. I think the immersion heavily improved the otherwise okay read.

Another first rate Western by Charles E. West.
U.S. Deputy Jason Storm hangs up his badge after 25 years, hoping to have a peaceful retirement.
He settles in at a new town called Paradise.
Soon after, 6 ruthless outlaws ravage the town, and Storm has to go after them.
Good action, good characters.

Not your typical Zane Grey/Louis L’amour style story. Very action packed and was hard to put down.

Another awesome read, from one of the greatest Western writers of the 21st Century. West never disappoints, puts his readers right into the pages and a master at creating believable characters.
In this one U.S. Deputy Marshal Jason Storm, retires after 25 years of chasing outlaws, and had the desire to retire before he was forced out due to his age.
Storm ends up in Paradise Valley, where he ends up building a ranch for himself raising Cattle and Horses. Even in retirement the outlaws still find their way to him.
Once the towns Patriarch gets killed, along with his crew. Storm steps into help the little town, fight the four outlaws and then goes after the lone survivor, Mace Cantrell.
The little town surprises Storm, when Cantrell comes back after hooking up with four outlaws, three are from his past, they end up going back to Paradise Valley and the Town makes a stand against them.
You're just going to have to read, 'Storm in Paradise Valley' to know the ending and this character would have made an awesome series. Perhaps West may very well end up adding a few more Jason Storm books to go with this one. Or at least I hope he does.
Be warned, you'll end up being hooked to his writing and may even try other Westerns. Then be like me, with a shelf in my library dedicated to his books and thanks to technology a collection on my Kindle.

Charles G West is probably my favorite western author. Hunting down outlaws is always a great scenario.

This is my second Charles G. West novel, and let me tell you he can really write a story!!!! Hunting down outlaws and bad guys always makes for an enjoyable read.
