In 1938, Sir Cedric Munday is married to Lady Isabel and with their two children, they live in a small Hampshire village in England. WWII is just around the corner and when it is declared, their son Paul enlists. Paul's father was killed during WWI and his mother remarried Sir Cedric. They adopted a young girl, Rebecca who wants to do more to help the country than knit. She volunteers as a Land Girl.

Philip Saville is a young man in his thirties who suffered a severe injury to his leg during the first war and lives almost as a recluse with his elderly spinster aunt until Lady Isabel finds ways to encourage him to be more outgoing.

Valerie is a very shy woman living with her controlling mother. When she finds a job at the village general store, she begins to build some confidence.

Those are only some of the characters in this book that takes place over a 7 year span. It took me a bit of time to try to figure everyone out. I didn't realize that these characters were introduced in a previous book, The Carpenter's Children.

I found this book very slow and although the story was good it did repeat itself on more then one occasion. Which spoilt it a little
