Cute book. You know after the 3rd time Clover said something doesn't feel right and she was correct, you'd hope that Ballard would listen to her for their rest of their marriage. She would keep a lot of harm from happening to him.

Solidly readable with a good setting and characterisation. The book is mainly let down by the barrier to happily-ever-after being a pretty implausible/stupid/unobservant insecurity of the hero’s, which persists in the face of all the evidence until magically melting away at the end. It seems to be a go to device of this author - I like insecure/uncertain heroes but hers just end up seeming a bit dumb. An upside are her heroines though - always pretty feisty, honest and intelligent.

Hoarder June monthly challenge-Where's my shirt?

This is technically a re-read for me of a book I'd read many years ago. I had recently read "Prince Charming" by Julie Garwood and it reminded me of this book so I added it to my list of books to look for at used book sales. I finally got lucky & found it the last sale. It was very hot last night so I couldn't fall asleep & decided to read. And of course, even though I remembered the story, I still ended up staying up late at night to finish it in one go.

Hannah Howell is one of my favorite writers. She creates strong, charming female characters who fall for strong, honorable, sexy men. Many of her books have humor which I always like.

This story is a departure for her as instead of a historical Scottish romance it's a historical in "the colonies". That was a nice change of pace. It is also a stand-alone.

Ballard MacGregor goes to England to find a bride. He's getting older and wants to settle down & start a family. Ballard is Scottish so he returns to the UK looking for someone more suitable. But the twist is that he lives in KY in America (ie. the colonies). At that time period, yeah...it was wilderness territory with many dangers & hardships for the early pioneers to overcome.
Clover's family is penniless and she needs to come up with something to help save them. She needs to support her mother & younger siblings.
Of course, there's instant chemistry when they meet. Some humor.
Clover & Ballard are likable as well as their family members.
Clover doesn't hesitate and hits the ground running as it were but she still needs to learn so she's willing to accept help along the way. Ballard takes his time coming around to accepting everything as usual.

I really liked this one b/c it was something different from her usual Scottish romances. I liked reading about life in KY in that time period as well.
Good story! Great characters!
Some suspense, some steam, romance, chemistry, humor, etc...

This is an historical novel placed in 1794.
Clover Sherwood and her family are now penniless, as her father has lost their money in bad investments and abandoned the family through suicide. The story starts in Pennsylvania.
There is her mother and two younger brothers to think about.
So she comes up with the solution when she sees a handsome horse trader in town.
His name is Ballard McGregor.
Especially after he sticks up for her when some bullies accost her in the street with rape in mind.
She comes up with the crazy idea to get married to this fellow when she sees he is honorable.
And he needs a wife with some polish and fancier upbringing to fit into the wealthier people's class.
So they make a deal and they are off to Kentucky to his beautiful horse farm.
But trouble follows. Lots of adventures!

More of a 3.5. Was going to give a 4 because it started as a good solid read but near middle and end, they got themselves into situations that came from stupid decisions. Then it suffered through the self doubt and poor communication. One of my pet peeves. Made worse here because they are two strong characters who did not have a problem speaking their mind.

Great classic romantic that leaves you all warm and fuzzy inside. The characters are great and really make you like them. Really wish I could read more of their story together and the people in their lives. Guess I'll just have to find out if this was a stand alone or not. Hannah Howell is a favorite and yet again she proves to me why I love her books.

DNFed at 20%. Got too rapey for me. Forcing her to kiss him when she was pulling away and telling her she wouldn’t be able to run when they got married. Yuck. I’m new to the romance genre so maybe that’s what everyone likes, but not me. Sucks because I liked the writing and the potential story up until that part.

Starting in 1794 in Pennsylvania and moving into Kentucky Clover Sherwood and her now husband Ballard MacGregor are starting their life as a married couple in Ballard's Kentuckian's homestead. A marriage of convenience turns to love. It has had to endure a battle with a deranged suiter of Clove's and others along the way. A good historical romance story.

This book came in a mystery box but man was it bad. The dialogue is awful and insulting to the readers intelligence as the author uses it to spell every thing out, and actually makes the characters look dumb as well.

3.5 rounded down. Would have rounded up if I hadn’t been forced to read the name Ballard in a spicy scene.

ballard pria tampan & sangat penuh perhatian.
clover merasa hidupnya sangat sempurna.

kemunculan ballard mengacaukan semua rencana thomas.

This book is about a Kentucky Scotsman and a newly poverty-stricken young woman. When Clover Sherwood is jilted by her fiancee, she asks the Scotsman she's just met to marry her. Clover has 3 dependents: her mother and twin brothers. This seems to be a simple solution, but it is not.

The book was a page-turner with few lapses in the action. I enjoyed it.

Author: Hannah Howell

Setting: Wild West. 1794. Langleyville, Pennsylvania and Pottersville, Kentucky.
Sex: Reasonably explicit. Frequent.
Hero: Poor Scotsman who is now ranching in Kentucky.
Heroine: Pennsylvanian high society who has fallen from grace due to her family’s misfortunes.
Trigger: Father commits suicide before book opens.
Trigger: Secondary plot with a boy being "owned" by a neighbour and repeatedly physically abused.
Includes: Excerpt from If He's Wild by Hannah Howell

Enjoyable marriage of convenience romance where both spouses enter the marriage with their eyes wide open. They know what they are taking on and are prepared to work for a lifetime together.

Some suspense as the rather mad BadGuys try to kill them, rape Clover, and so forth. A lot of implied and/or potential violence.

A little hard to read with stilted language and fake accents.

But overall enjoyable and readable. It’s nice to see the heroine saving herself, and using her brains. And I liked it.

Destitute overachiever heroine marries whiny wimpy hero and moves to Kentucky. They are a target for tstl villains that are an embarrassment to villains everywhere.

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse and were thanking the powers that be that you were at the end of this mess the author decides to showcase the H's stupidity one more time. He tells her he is going to set her free. She is from a higher level of society and could do better.

Seriously? It's 1799. Her father killed himself and local society immediately dropped her like a hot potato. There was no money after her father's death. She was being evicted from her home with her mother and younger siblings and the only job offered to her was barmaid if she slept with the owner. Oh and an old boyfriend wanted to make her his mistress so he could abuse her. I'm sure becoming a divorced woman would really improve her lot in life. If they had divorce in1799. First time I dnf'd on the last 2 chapters. By the way she should have done better but unfortunately she was 150 years too early to become Rosy the riveted. She was stuck with this insecure lemon.

This story was awwwwwful. They were the slowest two people in the world! In the beginning you’re made to believe he’s going to be this strong confident hero, like many others.

He didn’t have to be this unattainable ideal, but he so devolved into a whiny shell of what’s expected, I near lost my mind.

Danger is around eh-ve-ry corner, AND THEY CONSTANTLY QUESTION IT AND THEN DISMISS IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT, AFTER, THEIR ENEMIES SAY THEY GONNA KILL THEEEEEEEEEEEEM. It made no sense at all. NONE!

And you can’t convince me Hannah wrote this book. It went on and on about the silliest of things. Again, Ballard was the worst written lead I have ever had the misfortune of meeting.

Skip this book if you’re looking to keep hair in your head, ugh!

It was more like a 3.5 stars. Hannah Howell's stories are well written and interesting. One thing that I didn't really care for was the spelling/way words were written to emphasise the slang/southern drawl. The biggest being "weel" for "Well." Yeah, being from Kentucky I know there is a slang/drawl to some of the words but reading the words written in such a way just threw me off and I found it annoying. I did however like Ballard's Scottish accent. I actually really like Ballard's character overall as well as those of Ballards brother and cousin. They did have that southern gentleman charm, and Ballard had a sweet, loving personality. Overall, it was a fun and good book to read.

This book really wasn't bad at all. I have read other 'mountain men' historical romances before and have loved them, with the mountain man being a loner, gruff, slow to warm up to his bride type of guy.... The hero is this story however did not come across as the typical mountain man. He was very friendly, instantly loving and warm - which is not bad, just not what I was expecting from a Kentucky bride story. So the conflict in this story was mostly the hero and heroine battling some crazy bad guys, instead of the tension of them falling in love. (at least that is how I saw it). Still overall it was a fun read.

I brought 3 books by Hannah Howell on a holiday with me.I ended up buying most of her books via my Kindle. It is the type of books you can't put down till you finish it. But unfortunately all the books have the same ending, you just know what is going to happen next..which is very annoying because the book scripts are not bad at all.I would recommend her books, they are full of romance and adventure.

What do you do if your father shoots himself in the head and leaves you and your family with a huge debt? Well, after paying off the debts and getting abandoned by her fiance, she goes out and finds herself a husband. Luckily for her, she does find a decent fellow to take her and her entire family on. I did like the characters, although the 'evil' Thomas was one dimensional and obvious so there we're many surprises in this story.

I wasn't expecting too much from this novel - I have seen the cover. But it wasn't that bad.

It was somewhat ridiculous. Clover's ex-fiance is a trip, and Howell falls into the trap of designing two humans who would obviously fall in love with each other because neither has any physical or personality flaws. The novel lost a lot of steam in the second half, but overall I was entertained, which was all I expected.

This was the first book I have read from Howell. I enjoyed the characters and the setting. I found the leading lady full of spunk which was great. I liked that Howell wrote Ballard's words in an accent, made it a bit more authentic and allowed me to remember he was Scottish. I also would love to read "Willie's" story. Will look for more books from this author.

Love characters like this. Ballard is a great mix of gentle southern charm and tough scottish brawn perfect hero ! and Clover is gentile, refined, sweet, and loving but doesnt put on any airs; the perfect heroine! So I guess this makes this the perfect book!

Reread. One of my old favorites. Clover makes a great heroine, strong, brave and determined not to let her troubles get the best of her. Ballard, honest and hard working, and just a bit bewildered when it comes to women.
