The beautiful Estate Homes of WolfPointe are open for inspection. Thrust into world he had never imagined, Officer Malcolm MacKurghdy must solve a mystery begun nearly a thousand years before! A horrifying chain of events triggers an avalanche of suspense, intrigue and danger. A simple accidental death investigation, supposed to be a construction mishap, propels this first year police officer into a maelstrom of deceit, murder, and an avenging first nation spirit awakened in the wetlands of Illinois. Luxury homes built for the elite Chicago Suburbanites form the backdrop for a heart pounding race against time and death. The friendly, small-town façade is shattered when secrets are learned and the holders of those awful secrets are threatened. Those who discover the truth or wander too far into the swamp must be eliminated. Old crimes rise to the surface like the sheen of an oily, toxic waste dump. For Mac MacKurghdy, when time runs out the killing begins. Old sins rise from the muck; they will be reckoned with! Only one man can see the truth and know what must be done to stop it. For some, that man must be silenced. Winner of the LiFE award (Literature For the Environment), WolfPointe confronts the crimes of our recent past with the legends of ancient times. But the horror of it all comes to life, now! If you demand more mystery, more thrills, from a Mystery/Thriller then WolfPointe delivers. Lies and secrets abound; danger is at every turn. Death takes no holidays at WolfPointe -- These are luxury home to die for!

It's a well written story but it needed a more thorough copy-editing run. I noticed three obvious typos and at least one obivious gramatical error. Putting those errors aside, it was my kind of book, a wonderful blend of horror and crime drama. Plot wise there are very few loose ends and the story wraps up succinctly with the delicious ambiguity of scientific explanation and mystical resolution.

Mixing the Obijwa/Chippewa myth of the Windigo with a suspenseful tale of corrupt politicians, businessmen, and policemen, Buda tells a tale of murder and mystery in a Chicago suburb known as WolfPointe.

It takes time to really get into the story (about halfway before the action speeds up) before this reader did, at least, but the mystery of who or what is attacking the area keeps the reader going.

The novel definitely needed a better editor and proofreader as there were plenty of typos (wrong words, missing punctuation, etc.) including one on the back cover. Just an extra set of eyes might have made the difference between good and mediocre.

OK, so as I expected, this was a little too creepy for me :) I found it an interesting blend of Coyote Blue and Montana Sky, which I read ages ago. The "indian warrior" parts reminded me of the "italicized" parts of Coyote Blue, and the horrible animal deaths reminded me of Montana Sky. That combination was a little odd in my head :)

It was, however, a very creative story, and did keep me reading. And I'm very glad to have supported a friend and fellow BCer by buying this book!

The usual typos, due to improper editing, that seems common among books by indie authors.
But, once you get past that, this book is very good.
Bravo, Rick, you kept me turning the pages!

Okay, let’s start with the negatives…this self-published book would have benefited greatly from the services of a good editor. There are numerous grammatical and typographical errors, no shortage of awkward sentences and clunky prose, and many instances of highly questionable punctuation. There were even a couple of sentences that seemed to say the opposite of what made sense in their context. These are not trivial points, as they interrupted the flow of the story and distracted the reader. All of these issues probably would have been pointed out and corrected if the author had worked with an editor.

That said, underneath all of those issues is a remarkably good thriller. The plot is sufficiently original to pique the reader’s interest, and the suspense builds slowly but steadily towards generally rewarding climax. On the surface, this is a police procedural that addresses the political corruption in a small community, but there is an element of the supernatural overlaid in a way that adds to the suspense and mystery, without overly stretching the plausibility of the story. While the characters are not the most deeply developed, they aren’t entirely two dimensional either, and they are generally sufficient to their roles in the story.

Over all, this is far from the worse self-promoted work of literature I’ve encountered, and in fact demonstrates the author’s potential as a story teller. Hopefully, his future efforts will benefit from the attention of an editor.

A man is found dead from a propane fire at a construction site. Though it is officially declared an accident, rookie cop Mac MacKurghdy smells a rat. His suspicions lead him through a tangled web of lies and corruption as he tries to get to the bottom of a major environmental threat lurking in the swamps. For a little spice, a supernatural killer also stalks the area. Its relation to the main story is tenous at best, but it makes for a nice bit of drama at the very end.

Despite the otherwise interesting premise, I had a lot of trouble getting through this book. To say it was poorly edited is an understatement. The grammar is awkward and often incorrect, as in this sentence from the very first paragraph: "He'd dreamed of; of it, again." Though Buda is far from the first author I've wanted to pelt with copies of Strunk & White, I found myself stopping too often to decipher sentences, disrupting the flow of my reading and distracting me from the story. However, the punctuation flaws and numerous typos are easily fixable, as are the more general writing errors (e.g., needlessly repeated details). Buda shows real promise as a storyteller; I can only hope his next book is more technically sound.

I'm so annoyed with the dig for eating thus one! I really wanted to read it, but the first 13 pages are gone and the end is missing :( I'll have to search out another copy even though this one was hard to come by.

There are books you rate low because you can't get into them. They can still be good books. Then there are books which are quite simply badly written, like this one. Pity really, there might have been a story there.

I tried, but I just could not get into this. I liked the main character, but the writing just felt too stilted and awkward, and I quit around 40 pages in. The book definitely could have benefited from some much tighter editing.

The story tells of a cop whose life came off the rails, he's lost his wife and has very little contact with his wife. And then there are some very strange murders going on in town....
