Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., also known as T.R., and to the public (but never to friends and family) as Teddy, was the twenty-sixth President of the United States, and a leader of the Republican Party and of the Progressive Movement.
He became the youngest President in United States history at the age of 42. He served in many roles including Governor of New York, historian, naturalist, explorer, author, and soldier (posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001 for his role at the Battle of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War).
Roosevelt is most famous for his personality: his energy, his vast range of interests and achievements, his model of masculinity, and his "cowboy" persona.
While I have read more complete and comprehensive biographies, the enjoyable quality about this book is the fact that it was written by Theodore Roosevelt. At times, TR’s personality (at least what I understand of it) comes through more so than Benton’s. If learning about Benton is your goal, you may want to find another volume. If you’re interested in viewing an influential antebellum Senator through the eyes of a man who will eventually become one of our great presidents, give the book a read.
Thomas Hart Benton was a Senator's senator. A man of knowledge, negotiating skill, and strong character. Actively governing at all times, he worked diligently to expand our nation and stabilize banking. He was a man of courage who was much admired by T. Roosevelt. An interesting portrayal of this man's life.
An amazingly spectacular biography. Hilariously written, with a wonderful treatment of issues of the early 1800s, e.g. nullification, and the settlement of Indian land. There are keen insights on every page.
While Roosevelt's biography is good for the armchair historian, most would not make it to the last two chapters. But those two chapters are like getting two desserts after a steak and potato dinner.
This is a short biography. I didn't find Teddy's style all the conducive to a great read but was interested in the book because it's written about a relative of my wife. All in all I'm glad I did.
