In this clean contemporary romance, the descendants from THE CLEARBROOKS (the author's historical series set in Regency England) are now settled in modern-day Colorado. Widower and millionaire Tanner Clearbrook is livid when his matchmaking father secretly hires beautiful Hannah Elliot as tutor to his young son. However, the couple want nothing to do with each other, that is, until one little boy brings them together. But can their love survive a shattering secret?

Very formulaic and predictable. Sweet. I think Hannah acted pretty immature at times. What woman with any dignity would crawl on her hands and knees through a crowd to avoid a man?
I really enjoyed Almost Midnight. Hannah and Tanner have a chance encounter in the middle of the woods. Hannah blows him off thinking she will probably never see him again. She soon takes a part-time job as a nanny and after a few weeks realizes the out-of-town dad is actually Tanner. Sparks fly and it was fun to see them butt heads. I thought they had good chemistry together and even though things moved a little fast for me (I’m way to practical or cautious to ever commit to someone that quickly), their relationship and feelings felt believable. I liked that the story remained clean, but there is still enough chemistry to keep me happy. I liked the plot and side characters. I am looking forward to reading about Tanner’s brothers Rafe and Max!! If you haven’t read any McCarthy books yet, you’re missing out. I’ve enjoyed all her books and look forward to reading many more.
Content: Romance: Clean, some kissing Language: Mild swearing (less than a handful, if I remember right.)
I really enjoyed The Clearbrooks series by this author so when I saw this new series about the desendents of the Clearbrooks I had to read it. I'm happy I did!
The story was told from both Hannah's and Tanner's POV. Hannah and Tanner met in the most awkward way for Hannah. It was pretty funny and really realistic. Hannah was sweet and caring and somewhat emotionally broken from a past relationship. Tanner was confident and kind but recovering from his own sad past. I was interested to see how they would work out their own emotions and find their way together.
Fritz, Tanner's dad, hired Hannah to tutor Tanner's eight year old son Jeremy. That kid was such a cutie. It was sweet to see Tanner as a dad. Fritz was a spunky and hilarious addition to the characters.
This was a beautiful and sweet romance with a charming gentleman of a man. I really enjoyed immersing myself in this book. I wish the two other brothers who are the main characters in the next books were featured more in this first one. Each of the three brothers were amazing in their own way. You'll want to have all three books ready to read because this is a fun and relaxing clean romance to hide in for a few days.

Didn't finish after page 12. I did not like the love interests first encounter at all! He was forward and cocky and she was incredibly rude to give him a fake number and acting all high and mighty doing it because she 'bets he isn't used to getting turned down.' Yes I used to give guys fake numbers too...back when I was 15 years old! She should be way too mature and considerate for that crap. By her age you should have gained enough class to know how to just politely decline. This meeting isn't even need for the book! I can see the author was trying to start them out on the wrong foot before meeting a second time but she becomes his sons tutor! That alone should give them conflicts in their relationship. So maybe this book turns out okay but I'm already put off and there are too many other books out there that need reading so I don't want to waste my time on characters I'm annoyed by
I loved this book, however, it displayed one of the issues I often have with romance novels where the male character is wealthy. The author seemed to feel the need to point out how the guy is a an attractive millionaire more times than it was necessary. His family owns the entire town, he's hot and rich, we get it. Maybe I'm not shallow but the size of his bank account wouldn't have made me like him more or less as a character, it's not an impressive quality such as, let's say, being protective or selfless. Anyway, I really enjoyed the book. It was cute and clever.
Almost Midnight, was a free read from Amazon and it was surprisingly good. I had never heard of this author before and I was taking a chance on her story. The book begins with a prophetic dream of when she'll meet her soulmate and it just gets more cinderella-ish from there. You won't be let down by this free read from Amazon and there are more books in the series if you want to stay and play in her universe for awhile.
"You'll find your soulmate, honey. At the stroke of midnight, on a mountain road, when all seems lost, he'll come like a knight on his white horse."
This was the prediction Hannah's mother had given. Sure enough, she was stranded on a mountain road, right about the stroke of midnight. A man comes to her rescue, but Hannah is taking all precautions and refuses to leave her vehicle. The man helps her get her car back on the road. All he asks for in return is her phone number so he can take her to dinner. Quick thinking Hannah gave him the phone number of the local chief of police.
In the meantime, Hannah is hired as a part-time tutor for a young boy whose father is out of town on business. Turns out this boy's grandfather is best friends with the chief of police, and it was his son who had come to her rescue that night. Grandpa has his sights set on matchmaking.
While the storyline is as predictable as the standard contemporary romance, the story is filled with humor. There are no sordid sex scenes, and the author's way with words will have you falling in love with the characters. The book is relatively short and can be easily read in a single afternoon.
I forced myself to finish this. I was pretty close to DNFing when Tanner made sure that Hannah didn't get the job she was applying for. Someone who is that controlling is a huge red flag. Run honey run. I would have like to hear that Hannah gets that job later to prove Tanner could actually be something other than a controlling jerk. A lot of what happened felt awkward. Any scene when Tanner and Alex in it was super cringy. I found the part when Jeremy breaks his arm odd, firstly what parent let's their kid out of sight in unknown terrain, Secondly I would expect a bit more information about what happened to him, we are just presented with a cut and broken arm. Right at the end of the book Tanner turns up when Hannah is out on a boat, how the heck did he find her? And what a weird way to try and get her back. Something else weird was how Tanner was referred to as "the millionaire" so many times, yeah we get it, he's rich. So much weirdness meant this just missed the mark in so many ways.
Hannah is just biding her time until she gets a job as an engineer by being the tutor for an eight year old boy whose father just happens to own half the town she lives in. John Tanner Clearbrook is a businessman who lost his wife and his son blames him for her death. He has no ideal that his life is about to change when he meets the tutor that his father has hired for his son. These two unlikely people slowly fall in love but things don’t look so clear to either one of them because of their past history with love. But in the end everybody gets what they want and then some.
To live again after a tragic loss has its ups and downs. But the path to healing begins with forgiveness. We blame ourselves no !after the cause, no matter how help!was we were to change the outcome. And we blame the one who died. But this story doesn't dwell on that. Instead it shows how love brings that healing all on its own. Love lets a young boy forgive his father for not being there. Love lets a young widow to open her heart to new love. Love allows a man to realize manipulation is not giving love. Charming romance, endearing characters, I enjoyed it a lot
I'll never get that time back...I couldn't even finish it...no character development and such a wishy washy herione...I hate to leave bad reviews .just not my cup of tea
Laughter, humor does the reader good. Obviously serious issues --accepting death; standard misconceptions and miscommunication. Conniving parent. And it never hurts to have !millions of dollars.
This started out to be a really good clean read. It stayed clean, which was nice, but the storyline started flatlining. I had to put this book down multiple times because I felt like there was a timed loop. Nice read but very predictable.
This book is about two people falling in love. But they needed some help from the guys sneaky dad. The Dad is a real character in the book. Good read. Big D
Almost Midnight was my first book by Teresa McCarthy. I didn’t know of the author before purchasing the book but the blurb encouraged me to take a chance (and being free didn’t hurt).
Overall, I liked the book and it wasn’t a bad book to pass a few hours. However, there were a few grammatical/spelling errors and I personally wasn’t overly taken by the two main characters; I felt they were constantly contradicting themselves and jumping back and forth between emotions. It just felt immature at times. I understood the contradiction was supposed to show their warring emotions and how they were handling their new feelings based on their difficult histories but it just felt too much conflicting and that neither character really knew what they wanted for certain.
Telling the story of Hannah and Tanner, the story moved at a steady to fast pace and the writing is of a reasonable quality.Tanner’s son Jeremy was a sweet character and I liked the difference in relationships with Jeremy and also the comedy elements brought to the story by the straight talking Fritz. Think he and Jeremy were probably the only straight talking ones throughout the whole book!
If you are looking for a clean romance, you will definitely like Almost Midnight and the HEA and epilogue ties up Hannah and Tanner’s story but clearly sets up for further books in this series. I would give this book 3.5 stars out of 5; it didn’t wow me but I would take a chance and read more by this author possibly in the future.
I find the romance genre to be so tedious to read. Especially when the female lead is meek and "in love" within days and the male lead is controlling and quick to anger. Possibly the only good thing about this relationship is that they didn't fall into bed in a couple of days, but they did still get engaged in a ridiculous amount of time. I could have forgiven this (it is a story after all) but I can't condone a relationship in which the male seeks to control the female's life, especially in a deceptive way. I don't care how rich you are, that's not acceptable.
I enjoyed the historical books by this author and was not disappointed with this modern story. I would have enjoyed seeing more of why and how the 'soul mates' were truly that, soul mates. I understood their physical attraction and that they got along well and had a common love, but didn't see anything that made me believe they were destined only for each other. I really like this clean, entertaining story and will look for the rest of this series.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book when it was available as a free download and it's sit on my Kindle waiting for me to get to it and today I did.
It was my first experience of Teresa McCarthy's writing and I liked her style. It was a sweet story, had a cute child in it and match-making old man who has decided he knows what is best for his son. It's definitely a romance of the sweet kind, doesn't get too heated and has a HEA. A nice light read.
What an enjoyable read. Teresa is a new author for me and I enjoyed her light hearted, numerous writing style. Grandpa Fritz is a hearty matchmaker and his grandson the apprentice. How nice to have a light hearted romance novel that I would not be embarrassed to loan it to a friend because of graphic raw sex scenes. Innuendos are left to one's imagination. Looking forward to book 2 in this series.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Hannah is working jobs to keep a roof over her and her mother's head and paying mom's medical bills. She has no tolerance for controlling men. Tanner one night came to her rescue but she thought he was just an average guy. That is till she finds out she has been tutoring his son. The back and forth between the two has his father happy. He loves messing with his sons. First time reading this author and can't wait to read the rest in this series.
