Where do I start with this book...? I read this book about a week ago and it has been on my mind ever since. One serious book hangover!! I felt a for Katie, although I wasn't sure what it was at first. But the more the story went on my heart broke for her, Katie's husband Chris annoyed me at times as I felt he was very weak but towards the end of the book I started to like him a bit. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster that made my heart race and I was scared to read on at times but I was blown away by the end. The only problem with this book is the ending, I had too many questions that needed answering and I have to wait to see what happens next. Hurry hurry hurry... I NEED to know if Katie gets her happily ever after.
For a debut novel this is well worth the read. Well done L Calell.
A really dramatic story and a thoroughly fascinating read. Disconnected will be a hit with most readers. If you like to feel the emotions as a story unfolds this will hit the spot. I felt I was on an emotional roller coaster with the highs and lows (where I shed a few tears). The author has managed to capture the imagination of the reader through vivid description and real substance making Disconnected a very highly recommended read. Excellent Its 5/5
“Everyone’s perception of happy is always going to be different. Just like everyone’s perception of perfect is going to be different.”
Katie goes thru life not feeling, showing no emotion. If she doesn't feel emotion she can hide her past of torment she lived thru for 2 years. No one knows "all" her secrets, not even her husband Chris. Secrets too awful for anyone to help her thru, this is her battle she must fight alone.
Secrets can only stay hidden so long. Katie knows that her secrets are her's to bury but as her life begins to crumble, she watches Chris crumble along with her soul. He needs to know what happened but Katie fears her past will be too much and consume their future.
As she reveals her secrets to the man that is her world, their lives are attacked by her secrets and both are left shattered when things were supposed to be starting fresh for them. What they thought was their future becomes a devastated aftermath of Katie's devil making a visit that shreds the light in both Katie and Chris' marriage and life.
" You showed me how to love again; you brought meaning into an empty world. But, I've damaged you more than I ever thought possible, and you need to heal. As long as you are taking and feeling my pain, you will never heal. Be happy again."

Chris is the absolute best male character I have ever read. To watch a husband be totally in love with his wife and will walk on water to protect and cherish her was beautiful to read and also heartbreaking as he watches his love be shattered day by day. I totally fell in love with Chris and I could read about him all day long!!
I did get a little annoyed with Katie consistently pushing away of her husband. Her life and marriage could of had a little more piece and happiness if she would have given her entire self over to Chris. But I also understand, the guilt and shame she was feeling darkened anything she hoped to feel.
L. Calell....this book is beyond an emotional read and you did an amazing job with this story. Book 2 is sure to pull the heart strings and I can't wait to see what secrets that are dug up.
Through Katie’s fractured quest to reconnect with herself and her searingly painful past, she draws courage from within, with the support of her adoring husband. DISCONNECTED is a tumultuous read—steamy, enigmatic and heart-wrenching.
Received this book for free on Net Galley which in no way effected my review...
I thought the premise of the story was good, but felt some of the plot lines were too far fetched. Having Katie disappear/kidnapped for TWO years and nobody found them in the woods? I would also think she would have had more long term physical damage from being tranquilized on a daily basis. Also, the fact that she was able to escape and step right back into the real world was not realistic. She enrolled in college without graduating high school and under a fake name? At least come up with a plausible explanation.
The other thing that bothered me about this book was that it took place in the U.S. with American characters, but it often felt like the story was taking place in England with all the British terms. If a European author wants to write a story based in America, they need to to use the American words. We don't say "car park", we say "parking lot" or "parking garage". It happened throughout the book and really took away from my reading pleasure.
The only reason I'll give the book 3stars and not 2stars is because I felt the emotions of the two main characters. Chris had his own fair share of life tragedies, and LOVED Katie with all his heart, almost to a fault. Based on Katie's past, you can understand her lack of emotions. I suspected Casey would be back and was shocked at the way the author ended the book. It was much more tragic than I expected. I ran right to my computer to find out when the sequel would be out and was thoroughly disappointed I have to wait so long.
I hope the author cleans up her vocabulary in terms of the "british/american" thing. I am anxious to read the sequel and hope that Katie and Chris will get the HEA they deserve.

I have read various genres and I am not sure this one is in the best place as a Thriller Romance. There is a suspense theme to it but overall just an intense emotional story. Loved the story and the characters. Story was not what I expected to be reading. If you have read any Rebecca Donovan, Colleen Hoover, Teresa Mummert, SC Stephens (more this kind of 'damaged' genre)books - you will definitely enjoy this one. Sentence structure and grammar probably needs a little work which I am sure the author already knows judging by other reviews but if you put that all to one side - what a great story!
Beware though the ending is a killer and the next book is not out til October so if you hate waiting don't read this til nearer the time. I keep going over it in my head trying to figure where L Calell is going with it and how they will ever get that HPEA now!! Guess I will just have to wait like everyone else :(.
Really enjoyed this book. Although I do not like romance in a book, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one to any fan of suspense/thrillers. Everyone can relate to at least one facet of the characters! Excellent work L Calell!!
I struggled through this book, and contemplated quitting it many times. The grammar is brutal, and it really detracts from the story. Run-on sentences galore and awkward phrasing combine to make this a difficult read:
"Hmmm, that isn't such a bad idea, why do you always manage to make smile [sic], you are really and truly the husband I always dreamed about, my shining knight, my saviour, you make my world worth living, thank you."
"Waking up on Friday morning with the sun streaming through my window, my gorgeous naked husband beside me, a huge weight had been lifted, my head no longer felt heavy, I think it was the best nights' sleep ever in the last eight years, no nightmares or cold sweats, my vision of 'hope' was so clear on the horizon."
I found the dialogue very stilted and robotic. I can't imagine anyone speaking like that.
My other pet peeve is the British expressions scattered throughout the book. It is set in the U.S. and none of the characters appear to have any connections to the U.K. so why does every single character use expressions like "Fancy a lie down then?" Just set the book in the U.K. - it didn't need to take place in the U.S.
Chris's "deep dark secret" was ridiculous. Why would you keep that information from your spouse? That just seemed totally tacked on and added nothing to the story.
I think this could have been so much better. I feel like it was a complete waste of my time.
I leafed this to end. The story was interesting, characters as well, but I just couldn't stand the never ending sentences and kept placing punctuation marks in my mind and that distracted me quite a lot.
This story dragged on & on & was repetitive. It was a good story, love the characters though & I will read #2. I do want to see where Katie & Chris are & how their lives turned out,
Where do I start with this one? I didn't really know what to expect from this book, but figured I would give it a shot. I am so glad I did because I really liked this story. It starts out with a bang and just kind of sucks you in from there, I was hooked. The middle of the story does drag a weensy bit as it gets a little repetitive, but I think it was more to build the suspense rather than filling space on pages. Whatever the reason, it worked for me. The only really weird part for me was the lack of conversation that Katie seemed to hold with anyone. I get that she was emotionally scarred and couldn't really talk about what happened to anyone but, she didn't really seem to talk about anything to anyone for any length of time. Her relationship (marriage) with Chris was just...well..weird. I kept forgetting that they were married because there seemed to be so little that they really knew about each other. Aside from all of that, it was still a very, very good read that I devoured in two days.(only because my job wouldn't let me have a day off..smh) It will definitely get your attention and you will be hooked until you finish it. I will definitely be reading the next one. :-)
L Calell. Debut novel Disconnected This is the authors first novel, and I thought it was brilliant. I read a few reviews on this book before I downloaded it and I have to say that whoever gave it 1&2 stars must have been reading a different book than me. Katie seems to be happy nut maybe she isn't , she has been married to Chris for the last 6 years and he is a very good guy , he is a lawyer in New York City. Chris wants nothing more than a normal family life, but Katie has some dark secrets from her past. She has been disconnected from her mother and her boyfriend Gerry for the last 8 years. This story follows her time known as the missing years, it is at times a harrowing story but also a very loving story, I think like me you will enjoy this book and I know I can hardly wait for the next instalment . Well done to the author for a debut novel that you should be proud of . 5 stars. 06 August 2013 .
Something was "off" with this novel for me as a reader. The premise was interesting, and had potential, but instead of getting better, it seems to overwhelm you with the hand-wringing, emotional scenarios, the black outs the main character experiences, the graphic sex, the repetitive dialogue. Seemed like I was reading a YA novel at times. There was just Too Much of everything... One felt like "okay, we get it, you'll love each other forever, move on..."
Granted, it is understandable after what the poor girl went through, but even that seemed unrealistic at times the way it was presented. Perhaps the author will mature as a novelist and the prose may flow more professionally in her future works. The relationship leaves things hanging at the end of the novel, so that you can go on to book 2, but personally, I will not continue with the series. As a first novel it's ok, but not my cup of tea.
This was different but really good. It's the story of Katie, a woman who suffered a traumatic experience when she turned 16. It's now 6 years later and she's reached a point where she has to deal with it so she can heal. It's also a romance with some intimate moments written in because Katie can't say 'I love you' to her husband in words; she has to show him physically. It kept me in suspense wondering what had happened to her and afterward wondering what would happen next. It's a two-part series so I will be reading the next book 'Reconnected' soon.
This book had me hooked from the get go. I couldn't put it down until I was finished. I was surprised by the ending. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
“All this pain/Take this life and make it yours/All this hate/Take your heart and let it love again”–Adam W. Gontier
PTSD is a severe form of mental illness, making the sufferer disconnect from the world around them due to the lingering effects of a traumatic incident. It is most common in war veterans, but in Lisa Calell’s novel Disconnected, she tells a heartbreaking and simultaneously terrifying story about Katie, a married writer who suffered unspeakable atrocities at the hands of a young man she trusted when she was sixteen.
Her family thought that she ran away, but in truth, between age sixteen and age eighteen, Casey was holding her captive, raping her every day. When she got away she ran and made a new live for herself, but nothing was normal. Katie can’t cry, and she can’t tell her husband that she loves him because she doesn’t feel real emotions anymore. The past suddenly starts to come back, and now Katie has to face her demons…but will she and her husband survive?
In a story filled with deep emotion, danger and mystery, the reader will feel everything that goes through Katie’s mind as she tries to come to grips with her past. You will understand her frustration and her fear.
For those readers who suffer from PTSD for any reason, as I do, you will enjoy reading about the familiar subject and reading about overcoming it.
I also loved the devotion between Katie and her husband, Chris. Throughout the dark story, their love shines like a beacon in the night.
The characters are realistic, the story is believable and well-written and Lisa Calell leaves us with a cliffhanger until December, when Reconnected, the sequel, is supposed to come out.
Great book overall and I can’t wait for the sequel!–4/5“All this pain/Take this life and make it yours/All this hate/Take your heart and let it love again”–Adam W. Gontier

I just finished reading Disconnected by L. Calell. It is about a woman who struggles to reconnect herself after being traumatized for so long. Her husband is doing everything he can to help her through it. He keeps showing her love even though she is literally unable to return that love. She is also trying to reconnect with her mother after a long absence.
This book was a very hard read. I don’t say this because it was a bad read. I say it because a very tough topic was brought up. I actually think very highly of this writer for being able to write something so heavy. This was a very beautifully written story. I felt for all of the characters. I could understand everybody’s points of view and why they felt the way they felt. It’s not often you find that kind of thing in stories. I can honestly say I was really pulled in.
There wasn’t really much that I didn’t like about this book. In fact, I can’t think of anything at all that I didn’t like. It was a very heavy read. I think that needs to be put out there. No matter how heavy it was, it was still a great read. I’m glad I was given the opportunity to read it.
I fully recommend this book to many women out there. I don’t know if Lifetime still does movies, but they used to air dramatic movies all the time. I was reminded of that when I read this story. I guess what I’m trying to say is if you were ever a fan of Lifetime movies, you will be a fan of this book. I honestly dare you to try to read this book and not feel any kind of emotion at all from it.

This is a very touching story of a young girl who turned 16 years old and went through an experience that no one should have to go through. It took her 4 years after the experience to start feeling somewhat "normal" again. She was unable to shed tears after everything she endured. She met Chris and they eventually got married, although she was unable to say I love you our to tell him about the experience she went through in her past. Her mother came back into her life yet she knew Chris must have contacted her. When Gerry came back into her mother's life she started having a breakdown, headache, sweating, difficulty breathing and fainting. One episode sent her to the hospital and the doctor told her what he thought she may have yet he also told her that she could be helped and possibly cured. She eventually opened up to Chris and told him some of the things that happened to her. You will not want to put the book down once you start reading and your heart will go out to the characters in the book, except for Casey. I was in tears at the end of the book as I'm sure most of the readers will be. Exceptional story!
Sooo there was a lot of sex in this book. The book wasn't about sex but rather about Katie who was abducted, confined, drugged and raped repeated lot for about a year. The book does not give an account of all that so don't freak out. She is able to free herself one day but doesn't go home or to the police because her mom is dating the father of the psycho. Awkward!! She heads east, makes a life for herself, enrolled in college and meets a man whom she marries. Their life is tarnished by her rape, etc but the guy holds on because he lives her so much. Katie is not able to say those 3 words to her hubby, she's no good at expressing emotion and he never sees her cry. Sooo the sex part--I think it was well done. It showed how sex can bring people closer, feel loved, express love, relieve stress, etc. Under completely different circumstances, the same act, brings feelings of humiliation, hatred, control over another, loss of self, etc.
... First of all i was given this book by the author for an honest review.
So where do i start..., reading the synopsis i knew that this book would be a sad one. You meet Katie, a wife, writer, woman, but she is lacking any feeling, emotion, not able to cry, or say I LOVE YOU. Her husband of six years Chris, stands by her, not knowing what actually happened to Katie to make her feel this Disconnected, and this book is about a journey for both of them, to come to terms with what happened in the past.
Even though Katie feels "nothing" through the book, as a reader you feel her pain, so in this sense i feel the author has done a great job, because i feel Katie's pain, especially when she opens and lets us know what happens.
This book is worth the read, needs a little bit of editing, but it doesn't distract too much.
I really enjoyed this book. My heart was breaking the entire time for the main character Katie. She was put through so much, I had to wonder how she could survive.
The only issue that I had was that I could not connect with the character Chris until about half way through the book. I just didn't feel anything for him and I kept thinking he was going to do something wrong sooner or later. I was glad I kept reading. I fell in love with him as well as the book went on.
Warning to readers: this book has some violent scenes. It just made the story just right with angst.
The author definitely finished the first book off with a bang!
This book is really good. It is about a girl who is battling her demons from her past. She tries to overcome them and puts her marriage in jeopardy. The book ends in a cliff hanger, it really is a great and interesting read. She was missing for two years and you learn bits and pieces through out the book of what happened. She was kidnapped and held hostage. Very interesting book. Can't wait to read the second.
I was pulled into the almost hypnotic way this book is written from the first chapter --- it didn't stop there. I could not put it down! The author has a way of creating a certain aura that keeps you wanting more and always guessing what might be next. An excellent debut - I'm looking forward to more from this author.
I can't decide how to rate this book. It was very emotional. The plot was a difficult one, and the ending leaves the reader with a "WHAT?!?" kind of feeling. Which, of course, sets you up to read the next, Reconnected. There is so much love between the main characters, the reader can't help but pull for them, but wonder if they are going to be able to make it through the difficult times ahead.
There is a terrible beauty in watching someone recover from sexual abuse. You hurt when they hurt, more so when they can't feel the hurt for themselves. I can't number the times Disconnected brought me to tears, both happy and sad.
The ending breaks my heart, and I feel compelled to get the next book just to see if she gets her happy ending after all.
What a great debut novel from L Calell. Well written, great characters, plenty of plot twists and suspense to keep you intrigued and enough pace to keep the pages turning. Full of drama, angst, romance and generously interspersed with oodles of racy bits. I shall definitely be looking out for the second novel in the series.
This was a good read about a loving young couple on their way up in the world. Chris was a young lawyer and Katie a writer of children's literature. Katie had a horrible past where she was kidnapped and raped for two years but never told Chris. The story is about how she copes with her past and finally starts to reveal it to her husband. There is a sequel, Reconnected, which I am now reading.
This was a great book. The ending was a little predictable but it made me want to order the sequel. I just need to know how this relationship turned out. Did they get back together or did they move on?
