In the landscape of books aimed at new converts to Islam, "Welcome to Islam: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Muslims" by Mustafa Umar emerges as a commendable resource. It is tailored specifically for individuals who have recently embraced Islam and find themselves asking, "Ok, now what?" In a world where the study of Islam can sometimes feel overwhelming, this book provides an enlightening pathway for those eager to learn and practice their newfound faith.

Mustafa Umar has masterfully crafted an introductory guide that takes readers through the essential tenets of Islam. He eloquently explains the basics — from understanding the Five Pillars to daily practices — with clarity that is both inviting and informative. As someone who has transitioned from Christianity to studying Islam, I found the author's straightforward approach particularly engaging. The book serves as an excellent primer for those who may have little background knowledge, yet it also respects the intelligence of the reader by not oversimplifying complex concepts.

One of the most significant strengths of the book is its step-by-step format. Unlike many introductory texts that provide a broad overview of Islamic teachings, Umar’s work functions as a manual. It systematically walks the new Muslim through the fundamental practices and beliefs that should ideally be established within the first month of their journey. This practical approach encourages immediate application of the teachings, promoting a sense of engagement and commitment to the faith right from the start. New Muslims will find this especially beneficial, as it alleviates the anxiety of where to begin in their spiritual journey.

However, my enthusiasm for this guide is tempered by a notable omission: the lack of references and footnotes throughout the text. While Umar's explanations are accessible and digestible, a more scholarly underpinning would greatly enhance the content. The study of Islam is intricate, with a rich tapestry of sources, including verses from the Qur'an, sunnah, and accepted hadith literature, which are fundamental for any meaningful exploration of the faith. The inclusion of these references would not only provide the reader with a deeper understanding but also lend credibility to the teachings presented. For those coming from a Christian background or any other faith tradition, this aspect is crucial, as the journey into a new religion often requires a solid foundation built on trusted sources.

Despite this critique, I would still recommend "Welcome to Islam" to anyone interested in Islam, especially those who have recently converted. The book does an excellent job of addressing the common questions and concerns that new Muslims may face. It empowers readers to take initiative in their learning and practice, which is invaluable for establishing a strong connection to their faith. Umar’s intent to guide newcomers is evident, and his passion for helping individuals navigate their new spiritual landscape shines through.

In conclusion, "Welcome to Islam: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Muslims" is a useful resource for those embarking on their Islamic journey. It is a welcoming invitation into the world of Islam, embodying both compassion and practicality. While I would have appreciated the addition of footnotes and proper references for a more thorough understanding, the book’s strengths in clarity and structure cannot be overlooked. For any new Muslim or anyone interested in understanding the essentials of Islam, this book provides a solid starting point. It stands as a testament to the author’s dedication to helping new believers find their footing in a faith that is as rich as it is profound.

Non-Muslim Review:

After watching 90-day fiance and seeing many Muslim people represented, I was curious to know more about the religion. This book very plainly explained the main points of what they believe and how they practice it in their day to day lives. It's super short and took about 30 minutes to read.

I highly suggest reading this no matter your beliefs. As a Christian, I saw so many similarities to what I believe, which confirms my belief that we're all here for a reason and there is a God/Allah who loves all of us.

Thank you to Mustafa for publishing it. If I ever own a business, I'll make sure to include a prayer room with a sink ♥️

A short introduction for Reverts. The author eloquently explains the very basics of Islam a new convert to Islam should know. My only gripe is I would have liked to see references at least in the footnotes. The study of Islam is complicated, it would be helpful to include verses from the Qur'an, or sunnah, or the most widely accepted hadith. As a Christian studying Islam I would recommend this book to all.

Useful!

I both got this book for Kindle and Audible and both listened and read this. The book is very helpful, explains useful things, and gives resources to get more information. The Audibook is read by a computer generated voice and is not unpleasent to listen to I would prefer if the narration could at the same time somehow pronounce the words in Arabq correctly in order to save my needing to look them up. Over all I would say this is a good book and very helpful.

Wish for more

The author did a great job overall, but I wish he would have detailed the prayers thoroughly. Otherwise, I think this was a good primer.

Good information, but audible version kept referring to photos / pictures, including reading some captions. Virtual voice was good and clear.

Very informative

I've been considering becoming a Muslim, but I didn't have a true understanding of what it meant or how to define how I felt. Now I have a deeper understanding.
