Cheechako Series #2

Float Monkeys

Rate this book
Southeast Alaska is a new world of islands, float planes and adventure for Will, Elias and Will’s dog, Blackie.

They’re the new float monkeys—dock boys—at Spruce Cove Air who do all the loading, unloading and grunt work. So the boys need to adapt to life on the water and in the air—in a hurry!

What’s up with their fellow float monkey, redheaded, scrappy Ricky? What is Ricky not telling? And pilot Wild Wyatt? Can they survive him?

Beneath the fun of a summer job at an island logging camp, with float planes and new friends, real danger lurks.

Is the friendship that saved Will and Elias in a terrible blizzard, strong enough to survive a summer in the sun and someone new? Because when things go wrong, you don’t have much time to figure out who your friends are.

Float Monkeys is a 100-star story, so Amazon definitely needs to offer more stars. To say I was enthralled with both Cheechako and Float Monkeys would be an understatement, and I challenge anyone--young or old--to put this author's books down once they start reading. I was even moved to tears in several places.

When I first began reading Float Monkeys, I knew it would have to surpass the first book to keep my attention. Adventure? Absolutely! Almost more than one person can handle. Action? It never stops. I believe I held my breath all through the last half of the story. I am a lover of Arctic stories, mostly about igloos, Inuits and sled dogs, so it never occurred to me there was more to learn in the southern part of Alaska. Will Rollins, the young main character, proved that when we think we've done as much as we can in dangerous situations, there is always one more thing we can do.

Surprises galore await young readers (and old ones, too). Float Monkeys deserves shelf space in all school libraries. What a wonderful gift for thrill-seeking boys and girls. A highly recommended book by a master storyteller.

Start this book only when you have time to read the entire thing. While it was written with young adults in mind, it is bright, witty and loaded to the back page with true to life adventure. Therefore, it is for us old folks as well. Don't miss an opportunity to visit Alaska while becoming acquainted with some young people. What a deal, adventure, well thought out characters, and beautiful vistas described in such a way you get to travel without packing your suitcase.

The beauty of this book is due in part to it falling second in a series giving us reading pleasure over several books. The third in the series is in the works. Put this one on your "must read" list.

For youngsters to see what life was like for their grandparents when they were kids. And was pretty fun.
The author lived this life and knows whereof he speaks.
