2020 Read #27

Reread in 2020

I like Yako and the guardian spirit, so this volume is a lot more fun. I just prefer dynamic characters with depth; Yurara and Mei just don’t really jump off the page or make me empathize with them. Two more volumes to reread before I can start the spin-off Rasetsu!

Review for Volume 2 and 3.

Evil spirits, more about Meiwa and why he is hurting, confessions, drama, grandpa makes an appearance, the love quartet continues.

I wasn't planning on writing a review today, but now I have read volume 3 I just need to write a review. So this one will be about both of them. Volume 2 was definitely a favourite of mine, whereas Volume 3 just was too much focused on the romance and the love quartet, though I have to say that near the end it got better. Also we have a new character, the grandpa, and I just wasn't a fan of him.

So we first start with drama. Good grief, I sometimes just don't like girls (and I am a girl myself). Have you ever thought that maybe you should take some action instead of getting pissy and angry about everything? Have you tried to talk to the guy or make an effort in him noticing you? Oh no, of course not. Because that is apparently too hard. So I was kind of grinning when a ghost appears that feels a very close bond with our lead mean girl.

I am not too sure how I feel about the pervert ghost and how he acts around Yurara (onee-san mode). Just get the hint that she doesn't want you. What is with these guys and touching girls whenever they like or going so far to stalk them? That is just not cool and girls really don't want that.

The romance was so utterly confusing, and not only for me, but also for the guys and Yurara. So Yurara (normal) loves Meiwa. Yurara (onee-san) loves Hoshino. Meiwa loves Yurara (normal), though is also interested in Yurara (sexy onee-san). Hoshino likes Yurara (though I have no clue if he likes her onee-san solely or also normal Yurara). As you can see, I am losing count. I do feel sorry for all parties involved. Hoshino is finally smiling, but then finds out that Yurara only likes him when she is in her onee-san mode (probably also due to her personality change).

Of course, with some confessions the rivalry between Meiwa and Hoshino is flaring up, to the point that I was just rolling my eyes.

My heart just broke near the end of volume 3 (chapter 11). Yurara finally has the guts to ask Hoshino (and also Meiwa) who they like. Do they like her in her normal mode, or do they fall for the appearance of Yurara (onee-san)? I won't spoil anything, you will just have to read it yourself. *hands out tissues*

I wasn't too sure about the girls in the class, but it seems one of them has definitely learned a lesson in Volume 2 and may be appreciating Yurara a bit more. I say a bit, as she still seems to be quite pissed off at Yurara. At least Yurara is slowly seeing her as a friend and gravitating towards her.

I loved that we found out more about Meiwa's family, about his mom, but also about why he is so angry about ghosts. Why he is hurting. That poor guy, I can imagine that his heart broke and his anger flared up when that happened. I do hope that with how things are now that he is able to go on and maybe stop killing all the ghosts. Instead I hope that he will help them.

And then we also find out about Yurara's guardian spirit, her name, when she appeared, and that her name and Yurara's name are the same. I am still quite curious about the woman's past, and I hope that in the next volumes we will find out even more about her. Why is she so angry? What caused her death? But we also find out a detail about her in the third volume, and also the reason why grandpa is suddenly around (which is all connected).

It is quite funny that Yurara sometimes transforms in school and while people are confused about who she is, they apparently don't care much further than that. If I would see it happen I would definitely be curious what is going and where Yurara (normal) went. Maybe people don't see the transformation as clearly as the guys and us readers do?

The last chapter of the third volume was dang exciting (but also very sad at points). Oh my! Oh my!

Two more volumes to go, which I will be reading tomorrow. I can't wait to see how everything will end. Will Yurara learn to handle her powers, will she be able to protect herself? What about Hoshino and how he feels, will he accept it and continue, or will something happen? What will happen to the guardian spirit? Will we get more creepy ghosts? Will we have a happy or a sad ending? Eep, excited!

Today's post is on Yurara volume 3 by Chika Shiomi. It is 200 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover is pink with Yurara and Yako on it about to kiss. As it is the third in the series, you need to have read the first two volumes to understand what is going on. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character Yurara. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Yurara finds herself drawn to Mei, but her guardian spirit prefers Yako! Can Yurara sort out her true feelings?

Review- So lots of things come to head in this volume. Yurara discovers that she is named after an ancestor Yurara and that when she learns to control her extreme spiritual powers, the guardian spirit will leave her. Yako realizes that he does not love Yurara but the way she looks when she transforms and that hurts Yurara but Mei loves the real her not her transformed face. Some ghost high-jinks happen but that is not real important part of the plot. What matters is that the guardian spirit will leave Yurara when she can stand on her own. I am glad that the romantic sub-plot has been handled and I like who it looks like Yurara is going to be with, Mei does like her better than the guardian spirit. But I wonder what is going to happen to Yako then? Only two more volumes in this series and I am curious about how it is going to end.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Poor Yako… heartbroken…
And Yurara feeling so disappointed that the boys only like her guardian spirit and not her… But I’m glad to see that Mei likes her for her true self. I think she’s absolutely adorable. I like her sweet and timid self. I can relate to that! And I can definitely relate to loving the outgoing class clown lol. But I do like Yako too. I want him happy.

At this point I am only reading this series because they are quick reads to help keep up with my challenge. They are poorly written and not entertaining in the slightest.

There's an interesting twist in that while Yurara the living girl seems to have fallen for Mei (and he has supposedly the same feelings), Yurara the guardian spirit gets far more screen time and she thinks Yako is much more classy.

I find him grumpy and snobbish in this manga, he was much more interesting in Rasetsu, but I guess that's what the experiences in this series did to him. His nose gets pointed at the fact that he's in love with guardian Yurara and he even gets a kiss from her, unfortunately that means Yurara girl realizes she just kissed the wrong guy ^^. This makes him decide that he better make Yurara girl fall in love with him so she won't feel conflicted and he can love Yurara guardian without feeling bad about it *FACEPALM*!!

A lovely new side character who'll stick around till the end is Yurara's grandfather's spirit sent to look after the living Yurara, since the guardian Yurara is obviously messing up her mission. He's great for comic relief and an observer's point of view to move the story along.

I personally may not like Mei but when Yurara girl really tries to find out whether both boys don't just like the cool beauty Yurara guardian he has a really good answer for which of the girls he fell in love with (although he also still thinks that Yurara guardian and girl are the same person, so it doesn't matter to him in which form she shows up) and when. Kudos, Mei.

Yako's disappointment makes him a dark spirit magnet - that is SO WEAK a plotline, and she'll be using it again! Shades of Luke Skywalker :P At least there's character development for Yurara girl who manages to help a tiny child spirit to pass on without using Yurara guardian's power. Lovely.

In Volume Three of Chika Shiomi's manga, Yurara, the plot really thickens. This is a romance/horror manga, and the romantic side heats up in these four chapters. I don't give away plots, but keep in mind that you've got four main characters. You've got two guys, Yako and Mei. And you've got two girls in one; Yurara of the earthly realm, and Yurara of the spirit realm. Things can get complicated. Also, Yurara's deceased Grandfather shows up. Yako and Mei seem to actually enjoy him being around. And finally, Yurara discovers a power she didn't know she had! Great Manga !!!!

Yurara worries bout if Mei meant what he said. While in guardian form Yurara flirts with Yako. Yurara's ghost g-pa shows up. They find out that the guardian spirit is in love with Yako while Yurara is in love with Mei. Yurara helps a spirit go to heaven by herself. Yako is told to forget about his love.

Y'all, I am going to be so mad if this series doesn't end with Yurara's guardian spirit gaining her own body independent of Yurara. You cannot get me all invested in shipping her with Yako and then deny me resolution, that would be horribly cruel. :l I've got my eye on you Chika Shiomi. 3.5 stars

Awesome series, but I have mixed emotions about this volume. The part I loved: Yurara frets about her love confession to Mei and worries about whether he loves her or her guardian spirit. His response is super sweet ( and there's smooching ;) !) The part I didn't like: Yako clearly is in love with the guardian spirit but the way he choses to handle it is so not cool. Can't wait to read more....

Series Review: A very short and interesting manga Yurara is great for a quick read. The characters are funny and entertaining but the plot is unique but not very gripping. It focuses mainly on the love story. It actually is a prequel for the manga Rasetsu's Flower which is set in at a later time. Over all it is good for a quick read but not anything groundbreaking.

I can see how it would be a problem when one's multiple personalities are in love with different people. I wonder why that hasn't happened with me (yet)?
