The life of Danny is inspiring - a very human young man who was very driven giving it all for his brothers and his country, the grief the family suffered real, Some of the essays and vignettes were beautiful and touching.
p. 55 What did Danny whisper in his brother's ear while he was unconscious? Sun Tzu: The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom. p. 59 "humility comes before honor" Proverbs 18:12 p. 73 The Navy SEAL program is not looking for people who know everything, they are looking for people with a point of ignorance. p. 74 What Danny did: Observe, learn, practice, repeat. p. 173 Danny from the Desert Essay
I've read some books about war, combat, or everything relates. But this book doesn't talk much about how the servicemen face the war, but about motivation, learning, leadership, love, dignity, and virtue. Danny's parents on how they cope with the loss of their son touches me and how Danny's teachings about being a good man, a good NAVY SEAL, and a good citizen makes me ask to myself, "Have I done my best after all this time?". A good book not just for Americans, but for all of us.
This was an incredible book to read and it was very well written. I would recommend this book to everyone to read ,especially those wanting to go into the military . You don't have to be in the military to take away something good from this book either.
A little different than most books written about today's modern day warrior. A perspective that usually isn't touched upon very much, the early look into Danny's life growing up. This book should be on the top of every parents list of books to have your child read. My 10 y.o. son has read it and understands and has an appreciation for how these Warriors are forged from a young age. And more importantly he can understand that these men are human beings just like us but that they are able to do extraordinary feats because of never giving up and teamwork.
I may be a little biased, because I met the author. This started at a book signing at Barnes and Noble. I didn't see Lone Survivor but this is about that team and mission. It doesn't go into detail but reflects on the virtues Danny embodied. It goes on to describe the Navy Seal ethos and the character Danny had. The author does a good job to keep him human and not inflate his attributes. His essays are pretty good with reaching his point. I recommend this book.
