Long Guns is the eleventh in the series of Jess Williams western novels. In book eleven, Jess continues to pursue his job of bounty hunter, hunting down the worst of men for money. As if his job wasn't dangerous enough, he finds out that Thomas Stidham from New York City has hired four men to track him down and kill him using buffalo rifles to ambush him. Jess ends up in Kansas City, Kansas, where he meets Alex Brand, just one more in a long line of gunslingers who want to square off with Jess for his reputation. To make matters worse, a man who calls himself Snake Oil shows up in Kansas City and his reasons for being there seems to be a secret. Jess doesn't know Snake Oil or his real intentions, but when he does find out, things turn deadly.
Librarian's note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
In 1990 Robert J. Thomas was sworn in as the full time mayor for the city of Westland, Michigan. He served twelve years, making him the longest serving mayor in Westland's history.
While he was mayor he wrote his first book titled, How to Run for Local Office, which has now sold over 25,000 copies worldwide.
He has written and published on Kindle, the Jess Williams Westerns series. Retired, he now lives in Mississippi with his wfe Jill.
I am 74 years old I have Dementia and Altzimers but the good part is I have read Jess Williams series 3 times already and can’t remember them every time I read them
But it seems like the further the author goes in the stories the more like they are comedy instead of western. Getting weird characters and almost like laurel and hardy show
Jess is meeting the challenge of the New York competitors. He is also collecting bounties. He meets Dozer, A man who falls asleep with out knowing why.
I've read a number of Jess Williams stories in the past and this has to be the most disappointing I have read. Actually, this qualifies as the second worst western I have ever read.
Any writer of westerns needs to have a really good understanding of weapons. The .50 caliber Sharps was a buffalo gun becauuse it could kill a buffalo with one shot at a long range. When that weapon was used on a man, the lead went in with the diameter of a nickle and exited the human body forcing a chunk the size of a dinner plate out of the body. If someone took a .50 caliber round in the shoulder, their shoulder and arm would be blown from the body.
The shock generated by an impacting .50 round usually would kill a man simply because the shock of the impact alone was enough to cause a heart to stop, regardless of where the round impacted.
I lost track of how many bad guys Jess killed, but in the real Old West, no bounty hunter killed more than 3-4 criminals in a month, and that would have been an atypical month. Certainly there was never such a target rich environment as Mr. Thomas would have us believe in the early days of Kansa City, Kansas. Secondly, the vast majority of bounty hunters brought their payday in with a bullet in the back. Shooting someone from the front was considered bad business because it unnecessarily exposed the bounty hunter to lead coming in his direction. Integrity and morals were seldom found in the armory of bounty hunters.
In good conscious, I could only recommend this to someone who would have enjoyed "Penney Dreadfulls". There was a reason they had that name.
FYI: Kansas City, Missouri has always been the largest Kansa City and is historically the City where the most action was.
Jess Williams continues to deal with all the would be gun slingers and Bush whackers dispatched out of New York to put an end to Jess once and for all. If only they would heed the warnings. Jesse Williams is not one to show mercy. All cowboy fans will enjoy this book. So, "Giddy Up."
I read this out of order, but it was an interesting stand-alone story. Next year, I'll read them all in order when I buy as many as I want. I gave 4 stars because the book is just too short. I prefer 350-450 pages.
These books make me want to hit the trail. Hard not to fall in love with this series. Loved the new friendship formed between Jess Williams and Alex Brand. Great cliff hanger at the end of this one.
