Well now that was a different ending. It was better than I thought. Now that I have read all four books in the series. I now have to wait for the fifth book. And that is not cool. I just hope he likes to put out his books quickly. Okay I will have another update on this series when the new book comes out. Later everyone.

I am definitely enjoying this series even more. There is a formula to it, but each book is still adding to the overall plot and building from the last. Unfortunately I could not find any hint or trace of a Book #5 but I sent an e-mail to the author and hopefully it is just a hiatus.

EDIT: I got a response! And it was prompt!
So, here's the deal. The author does intend to continue and end this series, but there is no specific plan on how to do so (number of books, for example) as of yet. The author took a break to write "The Impossible Fortress" (goodreads link) and its screen adaptation. (NOTE: Impossible Fortress is a book meant for adults, not the same middle-grade audience as this series)

My Thoughts: This is the first book in this series in which I have noticed any typos or mistakes. There were only maybe two typos, but it is said repeatedly that Glenn and Robert were on a fourth-story ledge, but all the pictures of the school in this book show only three stories.

I was really amused by this conversation:

Glenn turned to Robert. “What's more important?” he asked. “A stupid Valentine's Day concert of saving the world from an army of ancient monsters?”

When Glenn put the question that way, Robert felt as though he had no choice. “I guess saving the world.”

“I'll save your seats,” Karina offered. “Have fun.”

What amused me about that? Robert's extreme enthusiasm about saving the world... “I guess...”

It wouldn't be a Lovecraftian series without the mention of Miskatonic University and/or Old Ones, and to my delight we have both here. Of course, these Old Ones are a bit different than the reptilian forms we normally see, being more tiny little fluffy things, but that's okay. I'm sure there will be reptiles at some point, and we have already had the snake sisters in the second book anyway.

At any rate, I am enjoying these stories immensely. There are some major changes by the end of this book, and things are really starting to hit the fan, so I'm very excited to see there things will go from here. Unfortunately, there is no word about what comes next, what the next book will be, or what is going to happen. The Lovecraft Middle School website only has information about the first two books. So, I guess it'll be a game of wait and see. Still, I heartily recommend these books for middle grade on up. They're a lot of fun.

This is the 4th in the series: "Tales from Lovecraft Middle School". Lovecraft's name here is not a coincidence! This is a horror story, although written in a fun and occasionally funny style.

The school was apparently constructed from the recycled remains of Tillinghast Mansion, the ill-fated home of a mad physicist whose last botched experiment created a parallel dimension in which the mansion remains standing, and which has "gates" through which our young adventurer can get to the mansion, while monsters and demons can wander into our world... Or at least the school grounds, for now, before they get stopped by Robert and friends.

This time we start the adventure on a thin ledge on the school wall, 4 stories high, on a snowy night, and of course it is Valentine's. The "gate" this time, did not lead to the mansion as expected, but rather took Robert, ..barely, outside the school building. That should have been a clue that things are going to be bizarre and frighteningly different. Well, I mean even more than usual around here!
A blizzard, a school evacuation and a car accident late, we are back at the school just in time for a power outage. Robert, his mom the school nurse, karina his special friend, and "Maniac Mac" the janitor are snowed-in school. Oh, so is the library teacher substitute, Miss Caracasse, with her cold cold circulation desk, her overpowering perfume, and her hidden identity (though it is not well hidden, I must say).

The story progresses swiftly and enjoyably with ancient monsters and old explorers' skeletons ( Indiana Jones, anyone?), until it reaches a haunting screech in Chapter 15, where Dr. Tillinghast appears to be the unexpected savior of Robert, only to ask him to do something for him in return.
We don't know why the mad scientist cares to save the boy, while he never cared about the fate of others.
We don't know why can't the Doctor do himself, what he is asking Robert to do for him.

The novel in my opinion lost its drive and wits by Chapter 15, never to find them again, just like a B-rated movie on a tight budget and deadline to meet.
What started as a promising YA story, didn't end well at all in my opinion (or that of my -almost- 13 year old boy). And it was not saved by the subtle and innocently romantic story-line about Robert's new affection for Karina (no spoilers here).

A couple examples about the flaws in the storytelling:
1) In Chapter six, Robert's mom brags that Lovecraft was one of the top-ranked schools in the region. Yet in chapter five, we learn that the school is only 6 months old. Now, I know, I know, we are reading a story about demons and walking dead and vortex that leads to parallel universes, so such a slip-up should pale in comparison.
But it doesn't.
I can willingly conspire with the author to accept the other-worldly plot and story-line, but the author should in return steer clear away from such inconsistencies. That's how the deal goes!
2) Towards the end of Chapter 16, the janitor (a good character, as opposed to evil one) really utters the following words: "I watched those creatures nearly devour you."
I have to wonder: what kind of helpful character would just watch....?!
How come the response to that sentence was anything but astonishment and disappointment?!
The dialogue here faltered and failed to be plausible or believable.

The writing style, I must say for fairness, was fun, and easy to read. Suitable I guess for the intended audience.

In summary, I wasn't able to be more generous in stars beyond 2 out of of five! Substitute Creature

J’ai encore une fois bien aimé ce qui semble être le dernier tome de cette série. Une série que j’aurais aimé voir continuer, car je crois qu’elle avait encore des choses à offrir. J’aime comment l’auteur demeure fidèle à la série, tout en introduisant habilement des variations, des nouveaux personnages, en exclu d’autres, etc. cela permet de se renouveler et de ne pas tomber dans une structure trop répétitive d’un livre à l’autre.

Divertissant, bien construit, bien dosé, ce tome est à la hauteur de la série, je crois dire sensiblement la même chose depuis le début. L’horreur demeure très douce, mais c’est parfait pour introduire des jeunes lecteurs au genre. J’ai bien aimé la fin qui offre une belle conclusion au niveau de l’évolution des personnages Cependant, j’aurais peut-être aimé une confrontation plus intense, mais cela ne diminue en rien le plaisir de lecture que j’ai eu. Je recommande fortement!

Petite anecdote, j’ai bien ri lorsqu’un personnage, le gardien/concierge du collège, mentionne qu’il y aura une tempête de neige, douze centimètres étant annoncés, ce qui, pour le québécois que je suis, n’est pas une tempête, mais une journée d’hiver normale! Par contre, au final, cela s’est avéré être toute une tempête!

The fourth book in the series Tales from Lovecraft Middle School, Substitute Creature, is in some ways the strongest book and in some ways the weakest. Either way, it’s still exactly what fans of the series would expect. Robert, Glenn, and Karina are fighting for their school and yeah, you guessed it, their lives.

This time around an extremely unusual snow storm hits the town, especially so in the area of the school (surprise). While most do make it out of the school in time, Robert, Robert's mother, Lionel (a spoiled rich kid who refused to take the buses out as he was sure that daddy would send a driver for him), Miss Carcasse (the substitute librarian), Maniac Mac (the janitor), and of course Karina end up trapped in the school.

Robert is sure that something is up with Miss Carcasse but since he cannot possibly tell his mother and Mac about the school, he’ll have to deal with most of it alone as Lionel is, well… Lionel and Karina has her usual ghosty limitations (which they’re now trying to hide from the adults). Oh there’s Pip and Squeak too, Robert has learned to communicate with them.

The villain here isn’t given much build up that storyline is almost too easily cleaned up. Robert is faced with his toughest choice of the series and yet that aspect of the storyline sort of takes a nice cop out for at least a part of it -- it does open up the storyline for a next book, but still it felt like a cop out. Despite those weaknesses, this is very much in line with the rest of the series. In many ways the lessened physical dramas of chasing around the bad guys worked. Robert and his buddies finally have to face some of their own emotional and mental dilemmas, ones we haven’t seem them really take on but should have before now, though this is still done in the usual lighthearted way you’d expect from this series.

This is a fun and surprisingly creepy (for kiddie stuff) tale about a middle school that's scarier than most. And middle schools are already pretty dang terrifying. Three friends - not all entirely human - and some adults, including a very odd substitute librarian, wind up stuck in their school after a freak blizzard hits the town. The children are resourceful and clever, but still hilariously awkward as most middle schoolers are. Kids and adults should enjoy these books. They remind me a bit of the Lemony Snicket and Fablehaven writing styles.

Some aspects of the book are a bit dark for kids' stuff - i.e., souls stored in ceramic urns, several dead characters - that probably would have upset me. Actually, I'm a softie so it still bugs me. I hope the author restores to life all of the victims sometime in his series. The substitute, Miss Carcasse, barely makes an appearance in the story. Some creatures called "Old Ones" that look like Popples with shark teeth are the primary Lovecraftian critter here.

I'd never heard of the series until I won an ARC, but the book does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed on the Lovecraft Middle School situation. I plan to read the first three volumes in order just to learn the backstories. I wish this series had been around when I was a kid. Many people compare this to "Goosebumps", but it reminded me more of the "Wayside School" series.

We are not the target audience for this book, being ancient and it being intended for the young, yet we found it quite delightful all the way around. We loved the lenticular cover and the frontispiece graphic as well as the interior drawings. And the story was fun and quite enjoyable.

This is the fourth in the Tales From Lovecraft Middles School series and while we hadn’t read the previous books as yet, we had no trouble picking up the continuing story and enjoying it. In this tale Robert and his friend Glenn with the help of a friendly ghost Karina are once again striving to keep the monstrous creatures from the other world from invading the normal world. Unfortunately for the world, and fortunately for the readers, they only succeed temporarily, so there will be more books and dangers to come.

Of course, most middle school students can tell you that many of the monsters have already made it to this world disguised as some of their teachers and as the seemingly obligatory class bullies that every school has. If you wish to introduce your “littles” to the love of Lovecraft, this is a good place to start.

Snow day!

Ok, so maybe your idea of a snow day from school doesn't involve being stuck at school with the janitor, your mom, a snooty rich kid, a ghost, a two-headed rat and an odd new substitute that has worms occasionally dropping from her body. Did I also mention there's no heat or electricity?

The gang's all back for the latest in the Tales from Lovecraft Middle School book, Substitute Creature, and they're stuck at school during an unexpected blizzard on Valentine's Day. While I like the characters and the world they're in, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first three. But that's also like saying it's your least favorite movie in a favorite series. It's not the best but it's still something you really like! I think it's because this one is a little different from the previous books. Because it's mainly a few people trapped in one location, it makes the story a little more intimate. I didn't often get the "just one more chapter before bed" feeling I got so much during the first three.

The climax of the book is where it really shines. Robert is given a serious moral choice by the main villain: he can turn his ghostly crush back into a real girl but he has to sacrifice someone in exchange. That's a lot of pressure for a middle school kid! I won't spoil his decision, or the ending, but there's a major change to the dynamic of the series in the final pages that has me really looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is the fourth installment in the wonderfully creepy middle-grade horror series, Tales From Lovecraft Middle School. This book continues the exploits of Robert and his friends Glen and Karina as they fight against the evil Crawford Tillinghast and his host of creatures who are attempting to take over Lovecraft Middle School.

In each of the previous installments, Richard and his friends face new and terrifying creatures, and this book is no exception with the arrival of the Old Ones. I do wish, however, that the title character, Miss Carcasse the substitute teacher, would have played a more central role in the story.

Most of the story takes place on the grounds of the school when the children, Robert's mother, Miss Carcasse, and the school's caretaker are all trapped do to a monstrous blizzard. Until help can arrive they have to find a way to stay warm when the power cuts out. Freezing, however, is the least of their worries. The Old Ones are trying to break into the school, and although the grown ups are blissfully unaware of this danger, Richard knows of the horrors that lurk within the school and the secret passages that lead back to Tillinghast manor.

There were some really interesting events at the end of this book and I am eager to read the next book!

Cover: I absolutely love the book covers for this series. They are just so creepy but fun at the same time.

Things that I liked: I really enjoyed reading this book. This is the fourth book in the series, and it picks up right where book three, Teacher's Pest, left off. I love that you are just kind of thrown right into the action within the first couple of chapters and adventure continues. I loved reading about the characters and the choices that they made throughout this book. I never expected some of the twists and turns that were throughout the story. I did like the pictures for this one. The old ones look like baby abominable snowmen waiting to grow up..lol.

Things that I didn't like: I was a little confused about the ending. I don't know if it is going to continue into a fifth book, or if this is the end of the series. I'm curious to know whether or not this is the end of not.

Overall: I really enjoyed reading this book, and I would recommend the series to anyone looking for adventure and creepy creatures lurking about throughout the novel(s). I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Last year I had people vote on what I read for the day and this time I just randomized one read. What I got sure is interesting. So this series is Tales from Lovecraft Middle Craft, which ran for 4 books in 2012/2013. I know very little about it, beyond that is one setting and group of characters.

The author is Charles Gilman, who does not exist. I found nothing beyond that there’s a Lovecraft character with that name. His actual name is Jason Rekulak and has a couple notable thrillers that I don’t know much about. He’s still I assume Lovecraft mythos Is involved but I don’t know much about it. Let’s just hope there’s no racism involved.

This was the last entry before the series died and for some reason it’s Valentine’s day themed. The covers are boring until you find out they are lenticular and transform into monsters. Anyway, onto the review.

Robert and his pal Glenn came to Lovecraft Middle School a while ago and discovered it is a hothead of monster activity thanks to these portal's to this mansion that is owned by this big bad. This time it's Valentine's Day and during an assembly, a blizard hits which ends up trapping some of them at school. At the same time, a new substitute librarian shows up and she seems a bit odd...

Yes, not a sub teacher, the title lies. So first off, the Valentine's element is weak. This could be on Arbor day and it would stay the same. Sure, there is a thing with a card Robert wants to give but that's about it. It starts with reminders but kinda drops them minus the card thing. This felt weak as a Valentine's read, but it's what I got.

That aside, I did enjoy this. It's got notable flaws but it had its charm. The main flaw is the rather scattershot plot. It's mostly about the blizzard and there's not a ton of horror. The sub is the last important part of this plot. She's kinda creepy when we see her true form and she does play a role but it feels not that important compared to the storm and the big bad.

It does feel too long, over 150 pages and you could chop some of that. It's weird in the pacing with big stuff happening after the sub is taken care of. There's quite enough atmosphere, as while the writing is fine, it doesn't have enough of a spooky mood overall.

But with all that, there's enough to like. Robert isn't much and Glenn is barley in it but I liked the other characters. The mom is involved and quite helpful to boot. There's the janitor Mack who has some fun lines and ends up being fairly important. There's Karina, a dead ghost girl who is pretty likable with how she just wants to enjoy life. Reminded me of Francie in Monsterville. Guess I have a character type.

I liked the storm setup as we see how they try to survive. I just enjoy these kind of stories I guess. There's some nice stuff later on as Robert has to make a choice that does tie into Karina's thing. It's nothing too deep and the ending to it is a bit too clean but it does work. There's a moment with Mac I quite liked.

This feels like a finale to the series which explains why this it. They recap enough so I didn't feel like I was missing much. The ending does wrap up stuff nicely, if a bit too cleanly. There's a bit that I can't tell if it was a legit cliffhanger or not. It can go either way so it ending here isn't too bad.

It's a mixed bag at times with mixed plot elements but I did have fun with it. The setting, side characters and nice bits near the end do give this enough substance to chew on. I feel the others may have done more with the creepy stuff but this wasn't bad.

It fails as a valentine's book though. It's not one to rush to read but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. This series may be worth a look if you want something a bit different. It's no Spooksville or even Monsterville but it's not bad for what it is.

Standing barefoot on the fourth floor ledge of the school while it’s snowing wasn’t the plan but Glenn had the bright idea to go explore the mansion and here we are. Anyway, it’s the perfect excuse to get out of Lovecraft Middle School’s Valentine’s Day concert. They’re singing all things lovey dovey in there.

Ms Lavinia, the school librarian and one of the only adults the boys know they can trust, isn’t in the library today. Something doesn’t smell right and it’s not just her replacement’s perfume. Miss Carcasse isn’t exactly the most positive person to be stranded with in a snowstorm either.

“In the end, your actions have no meaningful consequences. Your fates were decided long ago.”

I usually try to read a themed book for Valentine’s Day but this year I hadn’t found one in time. Imagine my delight when I discovered that most of this book takes place on Valentine’s Day!

I’ve been looking forward to this series for years and have really been enjoying it. If this was another book in the series, I’d say it was entertaining. As the final book in the series, though, I’m left frustrated, wanting answers to questions I now know I won’t be getting.

I don’t know if there were plans for more books that didn’t eventuate or if the author always planned on leaving the ending open. Regardless, I’m left feeling like I do when one of my favourite TV shows gets cancelled and I’m left in limbo for the rest of my life.

The entire series has been leading up to events that were going to take place in spring but I ran out of pages on 15 February. It sounded like spring was going to be awesome, too. From the third book:

“For centuries, the humans have trampled us! Squashed us! Swatted us! Poisoned us!” Howard said. “But this spring, with Master’s help, you will have your revenge!”

Please don’t hype me up with that many exclamation marks and then not give me spring!

We don’t get to explore the “giant labyrinth of cobwebbed corridors, twisting stairs, and mysterious passages” of Tillinghast Mansion for the first time. I was hoping we’d spend most of the book there, especially after Robert and Glenn went through a gate pretty much straight away. I still don’t understand why that gate didn’t lead where gates usually take them.

Mr Loomis, my favourite teacher, and Ms Lavinia, my favourite librarian, didn’t make an appearance. While I know where Ms Lavinia would have been, I was sure we’d see her before the end of the book. Also, Glenn got hardly any page time.

Some of my unanswered questions relate directly to this book. Others I’ve wondered about in previous books and assumed (wrongly) that I’d know the answers by now.

How does Robert understand Pip and Squeak? What’s their backstory? Why are they so smart?

Why didn’t any of the teachers ever figure out that Karina isn’t like other students?

Why does Karina need to sleep?

How was it possible for the beings from the alternaverse to morph into their true form and then back to human form without destroying their flesh suits?

Are the spirits trapped in urns for all eternity now because the big showdown never happened?

What happens when the kids go back to school tomorrow?

Why didn’t I get to see spring?

It’s not all doom and gloom. Eugene Smith’s illustrations are still a highlight. We do get invited to a slumber party and finally come face to face with Crawford Tillinghast.



We meet some cutie pie furballs and the storyline for one of our main characters has a happy ending decades in the making.

Make sure you bring a torch and some warm clothes.

While going through my large ARC TBR stack, I came across this small but delightful book. It takes place at Lovecraft Middle School, a school where strange things happen. A massive snow storm hits the city and only the city and surrounding area. Robert Arthur and his companions, along with his mother, the custodian and a strange substitute teacher are trapped in the school. Robert and his companions unite against the strange teacher who is trying to bring strange monsters into their world. It is up to them to save the schools and the world from the monsters. Quick read with unusual plot.

4.5 stars. The only reason that it got a 4.5 is because it seems as though the ending was left open. Being a creepy middle grade novel leads a lot to be opened about what happened after Robert told his mother about all of the monsters that were there. What happened to Karina, was she able to go home with them. Did they ever find the subs body after the snow melted? If Mr. Gilman had just written one more book in this series to fully tie everything together I would have easily given this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Igazán méltó befejezése volt ennek a sorozatnak, bár nem számítottam rá, mégis nagyon élveztem. Sajnos számomra nyitott maradt a vége és szeretnék többet olvasni a későbbi dolgokról is. Például arról, hogy mi lett végül Robert és Karina között, sikerült-e megállítani Thillinghast-ot vagy nem.. De ezek a kérdések megválaszolatlanok maradnak.
Összességében egy letehetetlen olvasmány az egész sorozat és meleg szívvel tudom mindenkinek ajánlani!

A bit slower to get moving than the first three, but as my eleven year old daughter who recommended this to me said, it got better, but was anticlimactic. It abruptly ends, and while there are some important character shifts and growth in this book, it ends on a sour note, knowing that this is the last in this series. My daughter was right - it just doesn’t provide closure, which is frustrating, but still, it has some solid moments.
