After suffering a life-changing accident, Natalie Simmons is ready to begin living again. Two distinctly different women enter her life, and she finds herself drawn to both. A choice has to be made. Will she pick the right one or unknowingly choose the devil in disguise?
Born in 1965, Robin Alexander grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she still resides. An avid reader of Lesbian fiction, Robin decided to take the leap and try her hand at writing. It didn't take long for her favorite hobby to become a full-time author. Since her heritage is Scottish and Irish and she’s allergic to seafood, she’s considered an honorary Cajun. When she’s not writing, she’s exploring her state with the top off her Jeep in search of the small towns on the water that inspire her. Robin is awkward, sometimes shy, loaded with anxieties, accident prone, dangerous with power tools, and has been known to make idiotic decisions. She has been fortunate enough to turn her shortcomings into the hilarious characters you’ll find in her novels and short stories. Her passion is writing funny tales about falling in love, being imperfect and reveling in friendship. Robin is convinced she has the best job in the world, and she’s extremely grateful for her fans who support her and enable her to do what she loves.

This book took place in Louisiana and there's an old woman involved. That's everything from the normal Alexander checklist in the book. And the old woman wasn't even wacky or funny. She was just there.
There is no real humor in this book. The romance, while there is in fact one in the book, was not the main point of this book.
No, this was a psychological thriller type. Don't get me wrong, I've read and enjoyed books like that in the past, been a while, but I have. Thinking of the book in those/these terms - as a psychological thriller and I'd rate it at about a 2 . . maybe 2.7. As a Romance? hmms. Maybe something around that as well.
This is a love triangle type book - mixed up with a psychological thriller. I knew from the beginning who the 'evil' one would turn out to be, and even how the book would ultimately unfold. Didn't get one specific aspect correct, though. The nature of the crime/criminal/insanity.
Right, said this is a love triangle book and didn't elaborate on that aspect. Natalie has spent some time cooped up somewhat hiding away from the world because of a horrible traffic accident. One that badly damaged her body, and killed her girlfriend. It's been a while now though and she believes she might be ready to actually move on and have a girlfriend or something like that.
Right when she makes that decision the universe plops down two women - one that leans more to the butchy side of things (though, as one character noted, she's more 'sporty' than 'butch'), and the other more femme (with unexpected muscles). Both women know of the other and kinda don't like each other, both though are interested in Natalie and kinda accept the concept that they will compete for Natalie's affection.
Terry's the 'butchy' one and lives in a cabin nearby. Quite handy with tools and stuff. Lyn's the more femme one - the one who always seems to be dressed nicely (nicer than one would expect for the area).
Meanwhile, while this epic love triangle unfolds ('will she choose Lyn? Terry? or maybe a battery powered vibrator?'), another story unfolds as well. A story of psychological warfare. Conducted against Natalie - with the intention of . . . well, I assume, driving her insane. Someone has been breaking into her house and moving things around - taking things, replacing things, returning things - but in a way (at least initially) to cause the invaded one to question their sanity. Did they leave their hairbrush there? It'd be completely unlike them to do so but . . . who else could have done it? Lives alone - no pets to play weird games. The games ratchet up. And up. Eventually Natalie breaks enough to seek help. Help thinks . . . well, let's not go spilling all the secrets, eh?
It was an interesting enough book, in its way. To a certain extent the best part of the book was the part that involved the dogs. Otherwise - nothing that I'd expect of an Alexander book seemed to be here (other than, as I mentioned, the story taking place in Louisiana and there being an old women involved somewhere in the background). I kind of knew what kind of book I was getting when I entered, though, so I do not think I'd have magically liked this book more if it had been released under a different name (as in, I wasn't exactly expecting a normal Alexander book when I entered the story).
My favorite author of southern queer romcom decided to throw something different into the mix. A thriller. And boy did I enjoy this. It's still Robin Alexander, but with mind bending 2 lesbians wooing but one may be stalking our dear main character Natalie, who is recovering from a life altering car wreck. Mental mind games and physical threats are breaking Natalie down and she must figure out who to trust. Not a bad story and a nice change of pace for Alexander.
Ok. I always hate leaving reviews on books I don’t rlly enjoy, bc I don’t like to bash things and I know how hard it is to write books!! However, I did not enjoy this.
I think there is a slight disconnect with me and this author. I’ve listened to a few of hers, mostly because Lori Prince is one of my fav narrators, and she has done a lot of the authors catalogue. However, I don’t think I’ve ever LOVED one of them. A few were fun, one I DNF’d early on bc it felt transphobic to me. And some of the others I’ve just not really gelled with.
I had higher hopes for this one! Robin Alexander tends to go towards the comedy route, and sometimes I find it too try hard (comedy is so subjective and a lot of times books that are supposed to be funny or romcom style don’t work for me) so a romantic suspense intrigued me. Unfortunately, this felt super predictable from the jump. No. I didn’t guess exactly how it all went down. But it took me about two seconds to see where it was going/who the stalker was, and from that point on I was just dragging myself to get through it, because I didn’t like the other love interest.
I’m going full spoilers, now, bc I need to, so if you don’t wanna be spoiled, stop reading here.
Okay? I just feel like part of the reason it annoyed me was that it felt like right away, the reasons why Andrea and Natalie etc thought Terry was the “good one” was because she was butch and handy around the house??? And Lynn was immediately dismissed by Andrea for being femme bc that automatically means she is high maintenance? Like, there are more than one occasions where Natalie notices how muscular and strong Lynn is, she gives no indication that she can’t also “protect” Natalie, but that’s never been a thought, everyone assumes Terry can. Terry was taken down immediately!!! Terry was no help at all!!!! Terry just yelled at Natalie, forced her way into her home, declared she was her protector, and everyone swooned. And!! One of my pet peeves, she said I love you after knowing this woman for a couple of weeks!!!! Ugh. I just straight up found Terry super annoying and knew she wasn’t going to be the stalker, and yet!! I was rooting for the stalker! Almost. lol.
I also like, I don’t know if could pinpoint the exact bits where the pacing was an issue, but it was. Maybe bc I clocked “Lynn” as the stalker right as the two love interests were established, but it never felt suspenseful. It just felt like it dragged and I never cared abt any of the characters.
A bummer. I’ll likely still give a few others by this author a try that Lori Prince narrates, but idk this one was not for me, and I think it’s possible that the author mostly isn’t going into my favs.

Natalie has isolated herself after losing her partner, Karen, in a drunk driving accident a year ago. Natalie was injured in the accident as well, and she finds it easier to just retreat from the world. But, as time heals her body and heart, she meets two distinctively different women that both ignite a spark of attraction in her: Lyn, her next door neighbor, and Terry, a handywoman. Unfortunately, one of them is a crazy psychopath who only wants to hurt her.
I loved Robin Alexander's Pitifully Ugly, and her writing style is much more like that book than the other one I've read Magnetic. The only problem for me, however, was the premise. Natalie calls in to cancel her phone service, and the psychopath on the other line (I won't give away who it is) decides that Natalie sounds arrogant and stuck up, so...she decides to date Natalie, break into her house, mess with her mind, and ultimately destroy her. All because she wanted to disconnect her land line phone? I found this hard to believe, especially since the psychopath had apparently worked for the company for a long time. Surely she had run into customers who were more rude than Natalie; did she hunt them all down? And it was pretty obvious to me which one the psychopath was, even though the author tried to throw in some mixed signals.
Still, if you can get over the whole "cancel your phone service and I will end you" thing, it's a good book.
Natalie is very slowly recovering from the car accident in which she was terribly hurt and her partner was killed by a drunk driver. She living in a new house and has made friends with the bookstore owner, her neighbor, Lyn, and a woman named Terry. She attracted to both Lyn and Terry but is hesitant about a relationship. Then weird things start happening and someone is getting in her house. Who can she trust with her heart and her life? Really great.
Wow - intrigue on a deluxe level that takes you on a journey so bound to keep you turning pages.
Natalie has had a rough couple of years since the auto accident that killed her partner. Terry and Lyn have moved into the neighborhood. They move into Natalie's life but all is not as it seems. What a mystery that unfolds as they get to know each other. Andrea literally saves lives as her love of Natalie makes her connect the dots. This is such a different Robin Alexander book so full of mystery, intrigue and crazy stalker told well. I could NOT PUT IT DOWN!!!! Really enjoyed.
Okay. So I don't have the best attention span, especially with current events. And I listened to the audio version so maybe I missed some clues. But I guessed WRONG. From the reviews it seems I'm in the minority.
Enjoyed the thrill, the mystery, the suspense - it was fun, fast paced. I can live without the romance, so that did not so much disappoint me.
I'm actually kind of pleased I was duped - makes me smile.
I do wonder if I will ever get used to the way southerners seem to talk to each other.
I really enjoyed this one! Everyone said that the “bad guy” is obvious, but I didn’t exactly see it coming. I suspected but still had so many questions. The answers didn’t occur to me until exactly when they were supposed to. I do wish that the chemistry between the main and the ultimate love interest had been a bit better developed somehow, but this was about the suspense not the romance. 4 stars because it’s a solid read from a solid writer, and did not disappoint.
I love this thrilling and short story, it is fast paced and addictive, with a major mystery and a touch of sapphic romance. Natalie, suffering from grief and still recovering from the injuries from the car accident, got an unexpected and evil stalker, who enjoys toying with her mentally. Luckily, Nat has two great friends who care about her like family. Meanwhile, she is pursued by two attractive women at the same time, and feels guilty for dating them both. I love imperfect characters, Nat has major trust issues and she is deeply insecure, luckily, she gets the happy ending in the end. This book is short but well written, with the author's trademark humor and it is a joy to read.
Wow, wthis book has so many twists and turns it’s impossible to guess (at least correctly) who the stalker is! It’s bold and scary! True to form Alexander weaves an entire town full of interesting characters. Excellent narration by Lori Prince on Audible.
I think this is the first of Robin Alexander's that I had read. I enjoyed it and have to say it was the first in a long time that really surprised me with the outcome.
I thought this one was just okay. I am a huge Robin Alexander fan and I have really enjoyed every single one of her books that I have read. This one, not so much. I didn't get some of the things. The following sentences may be classed as spoilers but I don't thinks they give much away.
Natalie got to "the brink of insanity" way too quickly, but then took forever to get her A into G and sort out her locks. By the time I got to the PIN in the drawer thing, steam was coming out of my ears and I was ready to beat the stupid out of her with my tablet. Having said all that, the bad girl big reveal was quite clever.
this book kept me on the edge of my seat. i even made up characters and saying the good 'guy' was not! the second guessing me was just what i needed. thanks for a great book.
