In the Wild

Rate this book
Amanda is a self-described social outcast and unfortunate target of bullying at school. Just about the last thing she wants to do is spend an entire week with her classmates on a white-water rafting trip. While on the rafting course that was supposed to be the best part of the trip, her rubber raft overturns, leaving her and her worst tormentor, Phillip, separated from the rest of the class. After almost drowning, they scramble onto shore to safety. Confused and cold, they wander into the woods and become lost; thus begins their week-long struggle for survival. Their dire circumstance forces them to depend on each other and Amanda proves to be the one more capable of navigating the hazards of the elements. The journey allows Amanda and Phillip to confront their fears, understand the natural world, and get to know each other beyond their respective roles as outsider and bully.

Thoughtful and insightful, In the Wild portrays life in the wild with such realistic detail that it could also serve as a wilderness survival guide.

Old review I wrote in 2014 on my blog:

Summary: The last thing that Amanda would want to do is spend a whole week with her classmates in the forest. They tease her, throw things at her and make her feel bad about herself. But the principal insists on having bonding time with the two sixth grade classes. But how did Amanda end up being stuck with the class bully in the wild hungry, tired and hopeless. Read the book to find out if she can survive.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to the ages 11-13. Because I read this book when I was 9 and I did not understand what the author’s message and the meaning of the story. 11-13 year olds would get sucked into the book and they would live the story with the characters. They will not let go of it without finishing the book.

About the Author: The author Sophia Nordin was born in 1974. She is a Swedish writer and translator. She is mostly known for the children books that she has written. She has published two books for adults. “In The Wild” was published in 2003 and was the first young adult book she wrote. It was awarded a debut prize. She now lives in south of Stockholm.

Good story with a good ending that should have a sequel. I will probably discard this into the trash, though, because of swearing (which is always unnecessary), the incorrigible behavior toward the main character for no apparent reason. Her classmates treat her like the plague. She seems to be a very nice girl; thoughtful, smart, forgiving and very resourceful. These are sixth graders and in preparation for their class trip they are given some survival tools, one of which is a condom - for carrying water. It may be useful, but it is totally inappropriate.

It has been a long time since I read this, but I remember enjoying it, and finishing it really fast.
