I got the 3 volume set for my birthday. These are the best commentaries I have seen to date. Not to technical and over wordy, but VERY rich and abundant. Jon has a way of helping us to see Jesus on every page which is exactly what I was looking for. I'll be thanking my wife for a long for this wonderful present!

1346 pages, an absolute tome. I wanted a study companion to read alongside my daily bible reading this year, and so I chose this one which took me from Genesis to Job. I'm not going to continue with the next 2 volumes, and I'm quite relieved to have finished this one. I'll explain why it wasn't for me below, but I'm not going to give it a rating as I dare not 'rate' such a massive and important work of a greater man of God than I.

Why it wasnt for me.

Eisegesis instead of exogesis. This commentary would suit pastors looking to write a sermon about any verse in the old testament. Instead of deriving the contextual meaning of scripture for the original intended recipients, he reads modern meaning into almost every single verse.

Over allegorisation. Apparently this is well known about the calvary chapel movement. But I found it painful and unnecessary to read types and shadows pointing to Jesus in every verse. He really goes far, an example is Courson proposes Caleb as a picture of the Holy Spirit and Joshua as a picture of Jesus. Caleb accompanying Joshua supposedly pictures the Spirit pointing to Christ, while Caleb defeating giants pictures the Spirit giving believers victory over the adversary.

Soft theology. I won't go into this too much but its safe to say there is a complete glossing over of hard hitting theological issues like Gods sovereignty vs human free will.

Lastly, he uses the NKJ as his base text, I refuse to read it so had to have a bible handy and keep reading across it every second sentence.

I was able to dig deeper. Have more understanding. Gain knowledge and truths. Questions answered. My heart filled even fuller with Gods love. He is good all the time. I feel incredibly blessed.
